PLEASE READ. THIS COULD SAVE YOU HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS. My stylist was Julie (the owner) 1. Length of time: My hair appointment started at 3:55 and was done by 4:30 which is completely unusual since I have long hair. Most places take an hour and 15 mins or longer. She didnt style or shampoo my hair. 2: The cut: she didnt cut enough (not even 1/2 inch) to get rid of the split ends (the vary reason I wanted the trim to begin with)...I am growing out my hair so I have no reason to cut it unless I get split ends. It looks exactly the same with a small bob looking thing around my temples which now makes my face look long and has taken away volume from the top of part of my scalp. I explained to her that I wanted it re-layered because I like the volume in my hair (when it gets long, it loses volume near the scalp). Now it looks like a mushroom with a long stem. 3. Cost: The 35 minute appointment cost $105 (not including tip). When asked how much my haircut would cost 10 mins prior to finishing she said she still hadnt decided. I have had MUCH better haircuts for almost half the price in bigger cities with better stylists that actually cut the hair and styled it. I am from bay area California- I know what an expensive haircut is suppose to look like and this definitely was not even close. 4. Professionalism: I waited 25 minutes before she was ready to see me. Asking me personal issues about boyfriends and their families, my family, my life etc is very unprofessional considering she spent 35 mins with me and some of that time was spent explaining my hair. 10 mins in- I dont feel like divulging that information to a complete stranger. She didnt get the clue when I changed the subject to lighter topics 3-4 times. The receptionist needs to learn manners and social etiquette. Not every person can or is willing to spend hundreds of dollars on products that may or may not work on hair so there should be no sly remarks if a client chooses to continue her daily hair regimen instead of paying for their products. Overall: I felt that I was taken advantage of to the highest degree. A friend of mine was charged $45 for a cut there (this person has payed 2 different prices for the same haircut with the same person before) and the person before me was charged $65 for a cut (shampooed and styled). Julie just left once she was done with the cut and someone else came to charge me so I couldnt even ask why/how that 35 minutes translated to $105 + tip. The figure initially was brought on a note-card that said $65. When I told her I would have to think about purchasing the products Julie had suggested, she went to the back and returned with a note-card that said $105 on it. I went to Julie Stone Salon for the first time last week. Let me just say that it is a gorgeous salon, very impressed with how professional this salon is. First I was greeted by the Salon's assistant Carrie. She took my coat for me and then offered me tea,coffee, iced tea, or lemonade! (They're house tea is delicious!) I was not expecting to be so catered to. Then Carrie directed me to the restroom to change into a robe before recieving my color service, explaining to me that the robe will protect my clothes from any possible color accidents. I thought what a great idea! And how thoughtful! I waited for 5 minutes before my stylist which was Carmel was ready for me. First we had an amazing consultation. She was so eager to learn as much about my hair as she could. Considering that she only had about 2 hours to learn how my hair is when I've had it my whole life. She asked about my color/processing history. And we came to a decision to darken my hair to a "rich chocolate brown" as she called it. With toned highlights. I was so excited. During my time in her chair she talked to me about where I'm from, what brings me to this town, favorite places to eat and shop at, because she is new to the area from southern New York, as am I. Carmel and I had a lot in common. The environment is very comfortable. As my color was processing, the assistant offered me more tea and a magazine. VERY professional. I also met the owner Julie, who was so kind and welcoming. When it was time for the color to be rinsed out, Carrie gave me the shampoo of my life! I can only tell you to go and atleast get a shampoo and blow out to recieve an amazing shampoo experience!! Unlike no other! The finished cut and blow dry was absolutley exactly how I pictured it to be. Carmel did not get "scissor happy" and realizes less is more! Without being like a car salesman, Carmel then recommended products she felt my hair would best benefit from. Yes the price of the whole service was a little more on the expensive end, ($155) but you get what you pay for. And I was more than happy to rechedule my next appointment for 6 weeks in advance. Last week I made an appointment with Julie who is the owner of the salon for a color and cut. I had never been there before but I have heard many great things about this place being the only high end Salon in Ithaca. My hair is really long so I was nervous about getting it highlighted because I have so much hair and I didn't want to pay a million dollars. When I called to make the appointment I was told that hair cuts start at $45 and color services start at $145 so I was eager to get in and get my hair done. When I arrived I was directed to the bathroom to change into a robe to protect my clothes from any accidents which I thought was very considerate to the clients. After I was seated in Julie's chair her assistant offered me coffee, Tea, water. With no extra charge. Before Julie got started with my hair she explained a few different techniques she could use which made me feel better about the process. She was full of a lot of knowledge concerning my hair its current state and products and rituals I could use to better my hair. When I went to the back of the salon (which is very home like and comfortable) I met her assistant at the sink who then proceeded to ask me questions about what kind of shampoo and conditioner I use and if I was sensitive to any smells or had any concerns about my hair. I found this experience overachieving for a salon in a small city. I received the best shampoo of my life with a scalp massage included in my service. when I got back to Julies chair she then suggested that we remove about 2 inches from my hair and add some layers to help my hair "flow like a river" as she said. Julie also suggested that we frame my face to add volume and connect the cut. After the cut and the blow dry I was met at the desk by her assistant who gave me a total of $215 for my whole service. I was very surprised because in a bigger city west or east it would of easily cost me over $400 for the same service and treatment. I can now say that I am a regular client to this salon and I wouldn't go anywhere else. The service was more than I expected and I was more than pleased. You get what you pay for :) read more

Julie Stone Salon is the only place in Ithaca with truly talented and professional stylists. I just had my hair colored and cut today and I feel like a movie star. Even though I waited about six months between highlights and had long roots growing in it now looks seamless and fresh, has just the perfect amount of spacing, and comes off as very natural. I moved to Ithaca after living in Boston for six years and was at a loss of where to go for my hair. I tried four different places that were supposedly good before finally finding Julie Stone. They are the only place that met my standards. I had an absolutely terrible balayage done at Satori (dark brown all over with a greenish tint when I had asked for ombre) and my first experience at Julie Stone was for that color correction. I walked out with my soft golden blonde back and no trace of the other salon's mistake. Not only are their services top-notch, but the stylists are beautiful, funny, and engaging. They make you feel like you're a part of their cool girl gang. Also, they just renovated their salon and it looks incredible -- it's light, airy and modern, with comfortable chic furniture and a stunning turquoise chandelier at the entrance. In sum, I'm so glad I found Julie Stone Salon. If you've had "meh" experiences with the other places in Ithaca, you should try it out. You'll probably end up never going anywhere else. read more

Stone salon immediately. Since I moved to Ithaca five years ago from the Boston area, I have tried several stylists at other salons and my haircuts have been quite pedestrian in terms of style and no one could help with the frizziness and dryness of my hair that had developed in recent years. My experience with Julie at her salon was fantastic! She knew just how to style and color my hair, producing a very stylish look. She carries incredible hair products that completely transformed my hair into a shiny, smooth look. Julie is so friendly and the salon's ambiance is cozy with artistic flair. BEST SALON IN ITHACA! This second floor salon on the ithaca commons is by far the only place in ithaca that knows how to do fabulous hair. Julie and her team treat you to an experience- how getting your hair done should be! I have had my hair done in top salons in nyc, dc, London, etc. and Julie's salon is up totally up to par with these world class salons. I love the atmosphere it's totally chic and my hair always turns out flawless and I have had it done now by Julie, Jill and Nicholas and I love them all! If you are looking for a salon in the Ithaca area do not go anywhere else- I have tried Satori, Tease, and Li Salon, and my experience has been unprofessional staff and unpredictable results. Thomas greeted me when I arrived and made me feel very welcome; really appreciated the offer for something to drink on such a cold day. I went to Julie A Stone Salon while I was in Ithaca for the weekend for a wedding. Ruth did an absolutely incredible job styling my hair. First she sat down with me and asked me what I wanted, and then she gave me a few suggestions. In the end I took Ruth's advice, and I was so pleased with the results. Jill custom dyed my new clip-in hair extensions and they're perfect! I have naturally red hair, which is notoriously difficult to match, and the dyed extensions could not be more flawless.
