Baguette Express

Baguette Express

Now you may ask me what is so special about this particular Baguette Express? Everyone knows…read moreBaguette Express is basically a sandwich shop offering baguettes (duh), baked potatoes, salads and sandwiches with a wide range of fillings and an affordable price. Nothing too exciting here right? Well this particular Baguette Express, which happens to be my local stocks MOUNTAIN DEW! Yes that sugary goodness that comes from what can only be the mountains of heaven is stocked here! I hate to say it, but a part of me has been completed by that discovery. At £1.30 a can you can enjoy the sweet nectar that you once only enjoyed in America (or other foreign countries which stock it). On close inspection of the can it seems it is imported from Poland. Genius, just genius. Now if they would start to stock Cheetos and Lays I could sit quite happily and get fat. Oh and you could pick up a baguette too, I guess they are pretty good. But Mountain Dew!!!

The staff are friendly and polite and often have a lot to deal with with all the school children piling through the door, some of which can be a bit rude to say the least. The food it's self is well prepared with generoud helping and well filled rolls and sarnies prepared right in front of you, it is reasonably priced and service is quick. have been in there several times in the last five years and have to say I have never been diappointed.

I heard about Oink on the Metflix show, Somebody Feed Phil, and immediately added it to my research…read morefor our trip. We stopped by for lunch one day and we each enjoyed a delicious sammich. The sammiches come on a big, soft, delicious roll. And they're filled with a generous portion of pulled pork. You get to customize them a little bit by selecting your bread, the size of the sammich, the stuffing (sage and onion or the homemade haggis), and a variety of spreads (apple, homemade mustard mayo, homemade chili cheese, and homemade chili jam). My wife got the sage & onion, and I opted for a haggis filling. We both very much enjoyed our rolls. They were very filling, and the staff was very friendly and helpful with suggestions. The haggis was unique, but we are very familiar with pulled pork sammiches back home. We really enjoyed our meal and would definitely recommend Oink to any hungry travelers in Edinburgh.

I stopped here shortly before leaving Edinburgh on the train. This was my last meal in Edinburgh…read moreand very delicious. There is usually a line outside this simple restaurant but possibly due to the light rain, the line was fairly short when I went. I only waited for like 5 minutes. The menu is simple as the roasted hog/pig is the only thing on the menu. You can choose a few things to customize the sandwich or even order it in a box. I ordered the Oink size (medium) on wheat bread and chose sage and onion for my topping and then the Homemade Mustard Mayo for the sauce. They make it in front of you and it is fresh and very tasty. Unfortunately when I went they were out of cracklings. They wrap it in foil and hand it to you. Pretty simple and efficient. I love that the outside of the building is painted pink like a pig (coincidence? Probably not). This is a good place to try for a quick, cheap and yummy sandwich. They do this one thing very well. One evening in Berkeley, California, out to dinner with some friends at a Korean restaurant, I…read moreshared that I was heading to Scotland in July of 2019 and asked if anybody had been and had any recommendations for places to go. Probing why I was going a little, they got out of me I am of the Gordon Clan of Aberdeenshire, a Scotland of Old clan. One of my friends exclaimed, "Gordon!" He paused, looked me directly in the eyes and said, "You know we're rivals right?!" He is Nate James Lindsey. A member of the Lindsey Clan, one of the Gordon Clan's rival clans in Scotland of Old. Once we addressed our rival ancestries, he recommended to me The Baked Potato Shop in Edinburgh, the city I was flying into/out of for my first trip not only to Scotland, but to Europe as well. Well, I might as well go I thought, how bad can a rival clan recommendation be. The night I arrived in Edinburgh, 5 July 2019, I entered The Baked Potato Shop and was greeted by a friendly worker. After looking over the menu, I went with a baked potato loaded with vegan chilli and vegan Macsween haggis. After placing my order, paying, and getting the baked potato I thought the only thing missing from my first ever evening in Scotland was bagpipe music. No sooner had I thought that than I heard the sounds of bagpipes wafting across the cobbled lane out front of the Shop. Across the cobbled lane I went, lured by the wail of the bagpipes. After listening for a bit and providing a tip I returned to the guest house I was staying the night at. The food was delicious and filled my travel-tired belly. The haggis was the first I had of any kind, vegan or non-vegan, and it was an immediate favorite. Offset from my departure time zone by 8 hours, I went to sleep soon after eating. I woke up early the next morning ready to go. Turns out the baked potato and toppings cured my jet lag in less than 24 hours, quite remarkable. What a way to end my first day in Scotland, a recommendation from a member of a rival Scotland of Old clan yields tasty food. I will however note that I am also of Irish descent, so I am still not sure what to make of the recommendation in light of the Irish Potato Famine... Ahhh, Scotland of Old lives on.
