I recently was given a wonderful tour of Journey21, which is best described on their own website: "Journey21 was founded in 2021 with a mission to provide safe, supportive, and enriching living and learning options for adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD) in Waukesha County and surrounding communities. Our vision is a day when every adult with IDD has accessible, meaningful opportunities for education, employment skill development, social activities, and can live independently in the home of their choice."
As I entered the building, I was in a bright and welcoming foyer, which set the tone for the entire location. Every staff member was beyond friendly, and there is obviously great pride in their work. Educational areas are superbly well-appointed, organized, and calm. While state-of-the-art technology was evident everywhere, there is also a very personal and hands-on strategy in each classroom. Very detailed activity schedules are posted clearly, and I could not think of anything that could be missing. I met some of the students and saw happy and well cared for individuals. The future will include residential living next to this academy. I can see this becoming a huge benefit for so many IDD adults and their families. But, I am also very impressed that decisions and plans are made with no rush, but with true intention. And I feel all decisions are made with every member at the forefront of these choices.
Simply put, this is a wonderful asset to the area and those who need specialized education. I am so impressed and will continue to follow the progress of Journey21 as they expand and grow. read more
