St James Hotel - outside area

St James Hotel

We stayed in a king suite River view - The President. I wouldn't say you have a great view of the…read moreriver as we could only see bits of it from the room angle and the buildings. But we still enjoyed it. Though I was glad the outdoor dining area was not open yet because it wouldn't have felt as private in our room with that area being part of the view. Please keep in mind that this is a historical hotel so the rooms are odd angles. The bathroom was very small and the toilet sat angled in front of the vanity, so it was a little cramped to try to stand in front of the mirror/sink to get ready (hair, makeup, etc.). I absolutely adored that the room numbers outside the room are vintage post office box doors. The trains blow their whistles a lot at night passing through and this woke us up each night, so keep that in mind if you are a light sleeper. We enjoy trains and liked seeing them (so that is a pro/con, we liked the trains, just not at night when sleeping). We were there for our anniversary and I was pleasantly surprised there was a bottle of champagne on ice in our room upon our arrival with a nice card. So very sweet. I found the bed to be extremely comfy! So much so I meant to see what brand mattress it was but I forgot to look. Darn! The hotel itself is beautiful, I enjoyed walking through when we came and went. It was fun to browse the few shops. Although I was disappointed to not find anything with the St James logo on it, was hoping to buy a souvenir of some sort with the hotel logo (coffee mug or wine glasses?). Maybe I just missed seeing them if they have them? In all we enjoyed our stay and wandering throughout town for a few days.

I've been traveling all over and I have to say the sheets and pillows were the best I've had and I've been staying in hotels across the country for over a month. Everyone working there were super helpful and nice.

Pratt Taber Inn Victorian B & B - Winter Room at Pratt Taber

Pratt Taber Inn Victorian B & B

We've been to the Pratt Taber several times and it's literally the only B&B we've gone back to more…read morethan once. For us, life is very busy and hectic and what we get from a weekend at the Pratt Taber is priceless: warm and cozy comfort and relaxation. The hosts Deb and Ron are witty and kind without being overbearing or too chatty. The coffee is wonderfully strong and the food really top notch. The linens and beds go the extra mile to make you comfortable and it's the little extras that make us feel so at home. And the price is reasonable for what you get, costing less than other boutique hotels in the area. Five stars, no hesitation! I hope this gem stays open long enough for us to come back a few more times because it's truly the best weekend we could imagine each time.

My gf and I on a whim were looking for a weekend/overnight get away. Actually, I had wanted to do…read moresomething special for her for Christmas, but not something material. Then I got Covid. When I got better, I thought more about what I wanted to do and decided on escaping from the cities even for a day. Eventually, choosing the town of Red Wing. It had been a long time since our last va-ca, and giving ourselves ample opportunity to do so throughout the year is important to us. At first, I looked at the hotels in the area, but nothing felt right. Then had the idea of staying at a B & B (Bed and Breakfast.) We began our search and when we saw the Pratt Tabor Inn and read the reviews, went over their website, something in both of us felt good, like the Universe compelled us to try this out. It would be my first time and for my gf it had been years since she went to a b&b with her family. When we arrived, we met Ron, and right away our conversation felt lively and warm. He helped get us situated and settled and the rest as they say was history...I'm a strong believer in my later years that the Universe places people, events, and experiences in your life that aligned with how you want to live your life. I wanted this get-away to be about relaxing and sharing our love for each other, ourselves, and others! And it definitely was. Instead of writing an epic story, which I totally could, I'll list off the highlights of our stay. -Incredible atmosphere -Ellie, Buddy, and Max!! -Wonderful hospitality -Lovely time over Wine, Cheese, Conversations -Amazing dinner suggestions in town, including what to order! -Deb and Ron - delightful human beings -We love sitting down with people to share stories. I loved that both Ron and Deb created the time and space for us to engage with them, as much as we wanted to. -beautiful rooms -fireplace (not real wood) -Popcorn -relax environment -breakfast, coffee, dessert oh my!! So good. So much care. -Bottle of champagne! And flowers (yes it's extra but so worth it!) -Beds -Autumn room I have too many great things to say about Pratt Tabor Inn, but I think the memory I will take with us this first time here was the love, care, and story. Deb's story is powerful! You can tell the love that radiates this B&B and how that love is transported to all the guests who come through the doors. Thanks Ron and Deb, Ellie, Buddy, and Max. Thank you for being you and wanting to take care of your guests, like family. We can't wait to return to learn more about each other. Big hugs, Pete and Emily

Think of staying at one of these two renovated homes as a Bed and Breakfast without the breakfast…read more This is a fabulous self-service style vacation rental. They offer two separate places. The Joseph Fugina House has a main floor that you can rent, complete with two bedrooms, a living room, dining room and kitchen. Upstairs, there are three separate rooms that can be rented. They each have their own bathroom, with a shared kitchen upstairs and a shared living room downstairs. I would highly recommend looking that their website, as the photos really show how beautiful this space is. They also rent out the Prairie School House just down the street. That's a full house (no separate rooms for rent). The renovators and designers did an incredible job. Walking into the Joseph Fugina House is like stepping into a Pottery Barn or Pier 1 photo shoot. Great attention has been paid to details. Our room in the Joseph Fugina House had wonderful windows that let in a lot of light and overlooked the Mississippi River. There was also a small patio with two chairs where you could sit outside and enjoy the view. Each room has a Keurig coffee maker. The proprietors even restocked us with some Chai tea and decaff which my wife asked for! We loved our stay and would absolutely, without question, stay here again. The location is great. You can walk to town to enjoy the shops and restaurants. Guests can enjoy a 10 percent discount at The Golden Frog, a bar and grill located in downtown Fountain City. The only minor negatives would be: trains are passing by across the street about every 15 minutes, so if you're a light sleeper or can't stand that noise, you may want to go elsewhere. Also, the water was slow to get warm in the bathroom, and when it did, it didn't get real warm. We appreciated having access to a full kitchen - the ceramic dishes, real silverware, a fridge, etc. Again, the decorating was amazing. I hesitate to speak too glowingly about the place for fear that the next time we want to return, it will be booked.

We rented the suite and had the first floor of the house with more space and cost sitting spots that we knew what to do with. Wonderful!
