Jeff has been RAVING about Jones Homemade Ice Cream Since we met. FINALLY, I had a chance to try it. We were camping for the weekend in Baldwin. I was 'told' there would be Jones Ice Cream every day we were up there and there was. We went 3 days! In. A. Row! We used the walk up window because we brought our dog and he obviously couldn't go in. FRIDAY EVENING: I ordered 1 scoop of peppermint chip in a sugar cone, he had a hot fudge sundae and chocolate malt - extra malt. I was served mint chocolate chip, which is fine but ISN'T peppermint. His malt did not contain extra malt. Regardless, it was still good. The service was meh... slow and not overly friendly. Our dog had a pup cup - a scoop of vanilla and it was free! SATURDAY MID-AFTERNOON Everyone from our group went to get ice cream, there were 8 of us total. Again, we brought our dog. The young woman working the walk up window was NOT happy to be there. She was actually rude, suggesting the rest of our party go inside to be served. While I understand her intent/suggestion her tone and flippant "well, whatever" was off putting. I asked the about difference between peppermint chip and mint chip. She replied "nothing". I attempted to get further clarification "why is there peppermint chip and mint chip listed if they are the same?" In a tone that implied I might be the stupidest person she's ever had to scoop ice cream for she said "it's mint. MINT is a shortened version of PEPPERMINT" oh... thanks for clarifying and for the record, it isn't. Regardless, we were happy with our order. I ended up with a Oreo flurry, extra Oreo (there were NOT extra Oreos, in fact there were less than I would have expected from a regular order without asking for extra) and he got a banana split which he loved. Slightly modified, but made perfectly. Our dog got a complementary pup cup! A scoop of vanilla that he was SO happy about. SUNDAY AFTERNOON No line which was super exciting! The young man that took care of us was slow but friendly enough. Jeff ordered a chocolate malt, extra malt and was given just that! Extra malt! I had a scoop of peppermint chip and a scoop of chocolate in a waffle cone. The cone was thicker than others I've had and it was really good! Dog enjoyed another pup cup! All in all, we are giving 4 stars because the ice cream is good, prices are as expected. Service was barely fine. If it was up to me we would have gone once and been done with it. They have new owners for a couple of years now and they have kept things mostly the same in regards to ice cream flavors and options. Why mess with flavors when the ones they offer keep lines out the doors during those summer months. The service is good and the prices are about mid range for homemade ice cream. Ok it isn't McD's ice cream or their prices but it way worth the price -- they give you a pretty nice size. For the passed 35 years this has been my favorite ice cream. New owners the last year or so has made me not even stop any more. Last week when my kids brought me a gallon of my favorite lemon custard home for my bday I could have almost cried I was so disappointed! They're not making their ice cream homemade any longer. Upon my arrival to Baldwin Michigan, where I was staying with my fiancé's family at a fishing lodge by the Pere Marquette River, all I could hear about was Jones' homemade ice cream. As soon as I heard "ice cream," I got excited... And when I realized how reputable Jones' was AND that it was homemade, I knew it was my mission by the end of the week to get there. On our way back to Novi, we stopped there for some mid-afternoon ice cream cones. All I heard is the strawberry flavor was the best, so I chose the one scoop of strawberry in a waffle cone. It did live up to its expectations. It's delicious, not too filling with fresh chunks of strawberries in it. It was basically a salad, LOL. The place itself is very mom-and-pop shop and you can tell it's been around for a while. They had those Jones soda bottles lined up, which I thought was in association with the ice cream but it turns out it was just a branding move and I doubt there's any correlation between the two. Only that they sell the soda there. The service was great and the prices weren't too bad, either. It is located in the middle of town and street parking is readily available. Overall, if you are in this small town and want to have potentially one of the best ice cream experiences, I highly recommend Jones. read more

It does it's job, serving those venturing to Wolf Lake and the surrounding area for a brush with nature and reprieve from the chaos of life. I have always given Jones 5 stars, but something has changed (at least yesterday). We went at 3:00; thought we'd avoid the line. We were wrong, but not to worry Jones' staff is always fast and pleasant. Not yesterday, the line was out the door and they only had 3 employees dipping cones (even though they had other staff around in the office and cleaning.) Took us 20 minutes to get our ice cream and not a smile from the staff while we were there. Next time we see a line, we'll go to DQ. read more

My husband and I came in this past weekend Friday-Sunday. We were waited on by a very welcoming and kind young woman with a contagious smile each time. We have been coming in for years now and tend to get the same thing every time. A chocolate malt. This young woman had taken our order on Friday and when we came in the next day she asked if we were going to be getting the same thing. To my surprise she remembered us and I said of course. We came in on Sunday and what a coincidence she was there ready to take our order again. She smiled and flagged us down to wait on us. May I add that those malts were the best ones we have had! The service was wonderful and quick. While waiting for our malts on Sunday, I wanted to observe how she made them because they were so yummy! While doing this I noticed the young woman waiting on us had several fellow co-workers asking her a lot of questions. And yet she answered them all while never getting distracted from finishing my order. Several times in the past it seemed we had waited quite awhile for our order and it never really felt the way that this young woman made us feel. I can say for my husband and I, that this young woman made us feel welcomed and also made us feel like the real definition of a valued customer! A super- cute ice cream parlor that's been in downtown Baldwin for 75 years. It sells its own handmade ice cream and some other ice creams, shrrbets and froyos, plus sundaes, shakes, flurries and smoothies (including a few surprises like strawberry- jalapeño). We were also pleasantly surprised to find a modest lunch menu here too, including a,couple of vegetarian choices. I rely enjoyed my salmon burger here -- basic supermarket salmon burger, but it was dresses with really fresh veggies, on a good potato bun. (Baldwin is a major sport- fishing town, so it was nice to see at least a small nod to that heritage on the menu.) My chocolate ice cream and my spouse's lemon custard ice cream, both made in-house, were very good. We're glad we stopped for ice cream, stayed for lunch. read more
