I suppose it's my upbringing, as a grotto to me has religious connotations and I'd half expected to…read moresee a shrine and a statue. I still can't figure out how statues depicting various religious icons from the Middle East all with white faces. Anyway I digress as usual. This grotto has no such connection; instead it's a pub/restaurant claiming seafood as a speciality. It's right on the coast with a quite slow, large lift from the (paid) car parking area down to sea level. It's certainty very atmospheric inside - essentially it's a dug-out cave with a history going back a few hundred years. I'm not sure it's a sensible venue if you have any claustrophobic tendencies. We only stopped over for coffee and drinks. So 4 drinks worked out under £20 that included a cappuccino, a Diet Pepsi and 2 glasses of wine. The venue sure has 5 star attraction just for the novelty of its construction but my coffee was two star at a push and just poor. The service was prompt and the welcome was very friendly. The seating was comfortable. The views of the wild Atlantic are, as always, priceless even on bitterly cold, grey dank days.

It has changed hands a few times, so it's worth checking it's open. We headed there in cold December rainy horrors, so it was good stormy looking sea in the dark for us- but there were photos of folk with jolly good sunny views on wedding days. I would personally go for more fairy lights, to up the atmos even more. Lovely friendly staff.
