In addition to other guests, there was a group of 12 guys who were on a bachelor party. I'm mentioning this because they were very disruptive but that's not Jürgen's fault and he did his best with the situation. There is a brewing room that you walk through with explanations of the different stages of the beer brewing process. In the back is a tasting room and most of the tour took place there. We all sat around a table while the guide poured and explained the beers. There appears to be a slideshow and we looked at some of the slides that identified the three beers we tried but I think because the slides were in German, we didn't see the full presentation. The tour was a nice diversion and although I have been on many brewery tours, I still learned something from this one, particularly about German beer. After the tour, your hand stamp gets you a discount in the gift shop.

Over the past decade, a number of tours have sprung up to give visitors a look at some of the…read moredarker sides of Hamburg's St. Pauli quarter, from a historical look at the tricks of the prostitution trade that has flourished for centuries to lore as related by a costumed night watchman. But Steffanie Hempel's Beatles Tour is a standout for a number of reasons. First, Ms. Hempel's passion for her subject gives the tour a warmth and enthusiasm that other's lack. This is no surprise that she developed the tour herself 10 years ago. Another reason is that the tour is given in both German and English, and unlike some tours, the information in English is as extensive as it is in German. Further, instead of ping-ponging back and forth between languages, Ms. Hempel will explain a fact in German, then give the English version and add another tidbit, before going back to German. This gives the narration a more fluid course. As she leads the group between key sites, Ms. Hempel performs appropriate songs from the Beatles' early days, singing in a voice that is reminiscent of both Lennon and McCartney, while accompanying herself on her ukelele. It's quite good and tour participants are encouraged to join in at times. Passers-by often stop to take in the performances. Through her extensive knowledge of the Beatles, much of it gained from her interviews with people who knew and worked with the lads during their days in Hamburg from 1960-62, Ms. Hempel builds a convincing case that the band may not have emerged as the world-changing force they became had they not spent weeks on end playing 5-6 hours a night in seedy clubs. In fact, their first appearance, on the Indra club stage, came after the five members had only played together for one hour, with a drummer recruited as he was the only guy they knew with a full drum kit. The band was the promoter's fourth choice and they lived down to his expectations, with the show saved by the stripper performing along with the group. Ms. Hempel then builds the story as to how they honed their lineup, their looks, their songwriting skills and their musical talent over four extended stays in the Hansestadt. She ends the tour with a mini-concert at the St. Pauli Museum, where the sign above the door reads "From stories come history." At the museum, participants can grab an Astra beer, take a seat and sing along as Ms. Hempel takes up her guitar and plays a handful of songs. Singing along is strongly encouraged and lyric sheets are available, but from the first note, most of the guests sing along with the songs that shaped much of their lives. And from their their broad smiles, the tour has added to those happy memories. And to keep the spirit alive, Ms. Hempel has just released CD of her interpretations of a number of Beatles' songs.

It was a Thurs night and apparently it was college night. There was a crowd at the door but it was definitely moving, but slowly. When I got to the front I gave the doorman my ID and he was like... "NO I can't accept this as a form of ID. Do you have papers?" I've NEVER had a problem with my CA driver's license EVER anywhere I've been and I knew he was just giving me a hard time. Luckily I was with German speaking people and one girl behind me in line stood up for me and argued with him and I was let in. I paid the 6EU entrance fee and 2EU coat check and was ready to party! Drinks were pretty cheap! 2 EU for shots, but my friend had already told me that coke and other backs were charged separately in Germany so I just had lots of shots. There were two dance floors- the main one is a pretty small one that you can step down into in front of the DJ booth. There were places to dance all around it and I saw both guys and girls dancing on the elevated areas. There were also plenty of tables all around this room. Overall-I would say the dance floor was small, but I thin it's considered pretty big for Germany. Downstairs, there are the bathrooms and the hip hop room. There's two separate bars down there and they were spinning hip hop all night. It was pretty good except for all that smoke... but hey, it's Europe and they smoke EVERYWHERE. Overall I had a pretty awesome time dancing the night away even though the night started off not so great.

The music was just awful - and when occasionally a good tune did come on it was immediately taken off within seconds with perverse DJ intent, straight back to the formulaic dreary re-runs of wedding disco classics. In fact, I love those DJs compared to Moondoo. The atmosphere was basic suburban corporate club - without the kookiness, interesting people and involving music. The drinks were average. The girl on the door was pretty. My Hamburg friend seemed to like it, but he's gay and was downstairs (marginally better music) cruising around. Somebody tell me where in Hamburg they play dance music that makes people happy, please?

Cover, coat check, and drinks are pretty standard: 6EU, 2EU, and 2EU shots. It's actually a pretty good sized place with accessible bars and two different rooms. The main dance floor was pretty big and crowded of course, but you could dance a little outside of it if you want more room. Just to the side of it is another room that just has tables and a bar so you can chill if you didn't want to be in the middle of all the party people. Upstairs, there's a pretty good sized hip hop room with tables and a stage where you can dance. They were also playing music videos on the walls while the music was pumping. I think I would def come back again because it's a place that you can go crazy and dance all night or if chill if you want to just get a drink and not party too hard. It has a little bit of everything for everyone...

This air of exclusivity seems very forced at the Halo. The public that goes here seems to be young, overdressed and overdoing it. Music on both floors is not the best, and not particularly danceable. I'm a fan of electronic music, but the dance music spun on the bottom floor reminded me of class parties in 5th grade. My boyfriend's brother was the DJ on the second floor the evening I went (which explains my visit) celebrating his 400's radio show on NDR. I'm not a hip-hop fan, but the music was passable. Hiphop isn't really my thing. Upstairs next to the hip-hop floor is also the smoking lounge. This is somewhat ironic since there is no ventilation, or at least not any noticeable ventilation. In closing, I'd avoid the halo unless you're the type that likes to mingle with the young and overdressed in a haze of cigarette smoke and cheap vodka. If so, wear earplugs.
