Get yourself TSA Pre-check, CLEAR, or Global Entry to bypass regular TSA. Don't forget that Wifi is also free at HNL!

Obviously, being adequately staffed makes a big difference. But the separator is TSA personnel in Honolulu are generally more courteous. In this day and age, to see the numerous non-international travelers who get turned away because they are in the wrong line is a little mind boggling. The signage indicating this is a TSA Precheck line are pretty clear and obvious. Travelers get disgruntled when they get in front of an agent only to find out they were in the wrong queue - but, hey, do that in major west coast terminal and see how much more unpleasant the experience is.

The main deep water cruise terminal at Honolulu Harbor, Pier 2 is the primary terminal with Pier 11…read morebeing the alternate. It has no ship bridge, instead expecting ships to offboard their passengers using their lowest deck, which in our case was Deck 0. Once outside, one walks into the main warehouse building, which is quite large but pretty vacant. On this day, there was one vendor selling shirts and some chairs set-up facing a makeshift stage. Unlike the other cruise ports in the Hawaiian Islands, the port at Honolulu handles both embarkations and debarkation (assuming for the NCL Pride of America which starts/stops at this port). This means the building can handle a lot of people queuing at once. Once you cross over through the building, you exit out into what resembles an airport terminal setup. Taxis, ride shares, personal cars, and tour buses all use one of two lanes to do this. On this day, the chaos was well managed by the traffic officers on duty. We were able to call for a Lyft that came within 10 minutes, with easy dual identification. Taking a Lyft to nearby Waikiki Beach took about 15 minutes, costing a little over $20. One can also exit the secure port on foot, with the Hawaiian Capitol building within walking distance (less than a mile away). This also means that the Royal Palace (Iolani Palace) is close by. It wasn't crowded at all for a Friday afternoon, where we walked, though traffic started to pick up as government workers started to leave for the weekend. Government photo ID was needed to get back into the terminal, as security checked the names to crosscheck against our ship cards.

Finally on to a shave ice cream- the best on the island. Our guide made a recommendation, but you could choose from any of the multitudes of choices. The van was spotless w/great air conditioning. She brought back koala bear toys, Korean dolls, lots of exotic coins, and other souvenirs for my sisters and me. She would tell us about her adventures and we could just imagine the foreign lands... I really admired her - she gave me a window to the world through her eyes. One of my grandma's favorite quote was: "See the world before you leave it". I believe that saying was from Char Tour & Travel Service which closed in 2004. Anyway, last year, my former co-worker and I used Travel Concepts for a cruise between Japan, Okinawa, and Korea. The owner, Maggie, was very pleasant, helpful, and organized. She answered all questions when we met online via Zoom. She emailed us back with the answers she didn't have at the time of the meeting. Maggie was friendly to each member of our group from Hawaii.
