I called Dr. Ham's office because he was advertised as a doctor for the Center for Medical Weight Loss. I have a significant amount of weight to lose (about 200 lbs) and am looking for an alternative to gastric bypass. The CMWL website advertises that their providers utilize nutrition plans tailored to their patient's needs, so I thought I would go for a consultation. My initial contact with the CMWL generated an email from someone in a centralized location, who then directed me to Dr. Ham's office. When I called the office, that's when the trouble started. The office personnel who took my phone call did not seem to understand that I was calling to make an appointment for the CMWL and instead thought I was trying to make an appointment for a non-invasive fat loss procedure called SculpSure. I understand that Coastal Prestige is just one of many offices for CMWL but if others in my area try to make this appointment I fear that they will be given the same sort of befuddled runaround that I was. In fact, so poor was this person's understanding despite my attempts to explain that I nearly hung up in the middle of the call and decided to wholly pursue gastric bypass surgery. I thought that perhaps this person was new, so I made my appointment. I found out when I arrived that I had been scheduled for a SculpSure consult. When I was in Dr. Ham's office, I only saw one piece of advertising for CMWL and it was not visible from the front door--only if you looked around the corner or were seated in the waiting room amidst many ads for SculpSure. When the lone staffer finally figured out that I was NOT there for SculpSure, I found out that I would be charged a significant fee to discuss CMWL because Dr. Ham is an 'out of network' provider for everyone except Medicare. However, the SculpSure consult would have been free. Needless to say I walked out without having seen the doctor, feeling like I had completely wasted my time. Weight loss is an extremely personal and extremely emotional thing to deal with. I worry that anyone else who may have come to the office would have been so distraught they would have done harm to themselves, had they had my same experience. read more

I went to Coastal Prestige as a new patient. was given an appointment with the Nurse Practitioner. After a brief interview, I was charged $225 for the visit. The "DR." didn't take my blood pressure, weigh me, or take my temperature. My insurance company then reimbursed the "Dr's" office $185. Been trying to get my money back ever since. Dr Ham and his staff are professional, helpful, polite, and prompt. Its nice to find a doctor who is willing to spend some time with each patient, discussing their needs, explaining diagnosis and course of action, etc. They don't overbook as far as I can tell. They use email effectively! The office and waiting area are beautiful. Don't let the comfortable surroundings fool you (the doctor's office and waiting area are furnished like a home or a business executive). You will not find a better doctor on this planet! And not only is Dr Ham simple incredible (and cute too), he is the only doctor I have ever had who actually sat down with me and explained my labs to me, what options I had, and actually let me make my own decisions with my own care! You rarely will find that, let alone packaged in someone you can tell stays abreast of the research, is willing to say "I don't know" when he doesn't (rare amongst doctors), but will turn around and do the research until he does "know." Even his office is gorgeous, with this incredibly calm feel to it and spectacular views of the ocean and Pismo Beach, plus his Staff is clearly dedicated not only to him, but to everyone who walks through those doors. Dr Ham spends more time with his patients that any other doctor we have ever seen. He is amazing because his knowledge is so broad. He can give you in depth answers to any question that is asked. He explains how bioidentical hormones affect the whole body, which vitamins are important and what function they have in the body. I know he is the smartest Doctor we have ever seen.
