The Good News: Marinette County bills itself as the "Waterfall Capital of Wisconsin" and judging from the amount of fast water on the rivers in the county, there is plenty of evidence to back up that claim. The county tourism people would like you to come visit and tour the waterfalls. The Bad News: No one publishes a dedicated map to help you find the waterfalls and plan out a route to see them. There are too many to see in one day, possibly even two days. Without a map or a plan, you're liable to take three or four days to see them all and do a great deal of criss-crossing and back tracking to accomplish your goal. Incidentally, Marinette County does publish a map on their website that has waterfalls in the legend. It is one of six maps on the website and is not identified as a "waterfalls" map. It is the first of three maps listed as "Marinette County Waterfalls, Recreation & Snowmobile Maps" but once you print it, there's so much detail you can't see much of anything. It is next to useless as a PDF file, too. Now for the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. The Good: Some of these waterfalls are breathtaking and well worth the effort to see them. The Bad: Others, not so much. The Good: Some are easy to reach without an real hiking experience. The Bad: Many are at the end of unimproved trails and will require some creative hiking to reach them. The Ugly: Some of the trails are a bit dangerous and downright scary to reach. A few caveats for potential waterfall hunters: 1) Most are off the beaten path, several miles from main highways. 2) Most of the access is on narrow, gravel roads, shared by enormous logging trucks. If you like your car to be kept in pristine condition, waterfall hunting in Marinette County is not for you. Drive with care! 3) Most of the waterfalls are in county parks. A nominal daily fee is required, however, once the fee is paid for the day, the permit is good in all the county parks. 4) Plan your day(s) before you head for Marinette County to go waterfall hunting. 5) Many of the waterfalls are actually whitewater rapids, very popular with rafters and kayakers but not so exciting for people looking for dramatic drops. I took a few hours and located the waterfalls on a map app and located the GPS coordinates. I was surprised how many of them are actually close together, but how far out some of them are. You actually have to go to Michigan to see waterfalls on boundary waters. My own favorites? Dave's Falls, Four Foot Falls, Horseshoe Falls, Twelve Foot Falls, Strong Falls and McClintock Falls. There are others that I need to go back to Marinette County to see.

camped here in mid june for 3 nights…read more first off location - right off lake michigan, maybe 50 feet. its so calming to here the light waves hit the shore at nighttime. for the most part there is tree line between the sites and the lake but there are benches throughout the site where you can view the lake - really nice for the sunrise and sunsets. the sites them self were quite large compared to the sites ive been to through the years. we were able to easily park a SUV, set up our tent, have a picnic bench, and a fire pit with no problem. another large vehicle and tent would have fit the site. a majority of the sites had campers parked at them. a majority of the sites contained electrical outlets - 20 and 30 amp receptacles the amenities were outstanding. the bathroom/shower area in the middle of the site appeared to be brand new or very recently renovated. the bathrooms were cleaned daily and the showers actually had hot water and private stalls with lockable doors. the site also had a volleyball beach court, teatherball, and basketball hoop near the beach. the rangers sold wood and ice and also had gear for the sporting events that could be used. i did not see a downside to this site. the nearest town was at least a 20-30 minute drive so we felt like we were away from life aside from the occassional semi truck that would speed down the nearest county road.

Lake Michigan is beautiful! The parks is well kept up!…read more As far as the campground, itself... Most sites are just grass, and many are not even close to being level. For some reason, they let tall weeds grow 5-6 feet at the lakefront.... Sitting down, you can hear the lake, but not see it very well. Not sure why....? Bring an extra extension electrical cord. Remember, no water hookups, so fill up on your way in. Site 33, does NOT have unobstructed view of the lake, as tenters set up directly between the lake and site 33. "Great" playground for the kids.... But the screaming gets old quickly! And take extra caution, because kids were "racing" alongside our vehicle on their bikes! And so, if you are coming for some quiet time.....don't. And, they installed some "bell/chime" for the kids.... Super annoying! The swimming beach is rocky by the shore. May want some water socks. Shower and toilet facilities are nice! Summary: Beautiful, well maintained park, but if you want a quiet retreat, go elsewhere.

Rock Island is, well, rocky. Make sure you have sturdy soled shoes or hiking boots because hiking…read morearound without them will sincerely tire out your feet. Unless you have your own boat access, you will take two boats to get there. The first is from the tip of the Door County peninsula to Washington Island, and the second is from Washington Island to Rock Island. Now, you may take your vehicle to Washington Island, but Rock Island is pedestrian traffic only. That is because there is nothing on it....it's uninhabited forest save for birds and some ground dwelling animals, like squirrels and chipmunks. You may hike around the island (it's large, but not huge, it doesn't take all day), and primitive camp. There are a few buildings you can visit and some you can even go in. Food and beverage is allowed, but you must bring it with you, and take all trash with you when you leave. Make sure to get back to the dock at one of the scheduled departure times, especially if you need to make the ferry back to the mainland. If you miss the last boat on either island, you're stuck until the following day. 6/2025

This is a lovely park, and since my last visit they have rebuilt the access to the beach that is near the parking lot. They've also added a blue mat that makes it easy to walk along the beach between entrance 1 and 2. The beach is beautiful and a great place to look for fossils. After climbing back up to the trail at the second access point a park employee alerted us to the presence of orange slime mold on some stumps. Apparently it is a rare phenomenon and the bright orange goop is actually a collection of harmless amoebas. I learn something on every vacation! We hiked the loop and then continued on the new connection to Cave Point Country Park which made for a really nice half day hike!

I'm adding an update since it's been 4 years since my last review of this park, but please also see…read moremy 2 earlier reviews. They have completely rebuilt the fire tower adding an accessible ramp. While we are able to climb stairs, we enjoyed the ramp a great deal. I'm not a huge fan of open stairs and found this wide ramp that is intended for both wheelchair users and walkers to be a very pleasant way to reach the viewing platform and return to ground level. The view from the top is amazing on a clear day. We also walked part of the sunset bike trail as an out and back which was lovely. We started at the beach, headed toward the lighthouse and continued on to the bluffs/cliffs before turning around. It was about 6 miles round trip and had lots of wildflowers and beaches along the way. This is a great trail for anyone who doesn't want to navigate a lot of tree roots or rocks. Other updates: The lighthouse is being refurbished and is scheduled to reopen later in June 2026. There are now food trucks near the beach if you don't feel like bringing a picnic lunch!

This is a review of the park of someone who went there on a rainy day to see some spots but did not…read morecamp or spend a lot of time. To access the park, you have to pay a vehicle admission pass at the visitor center. Daily pass for out-of-state plates is $16. The rates are different for Wisconsin plates and senior citizens. 12-month pass is available as well. The small gift shop in the visitor center has magnets, stickers, paper weights, shirts, etc. There are also comfort rooms inside. It was raining when we visited. The rain stopped for a bit and we were able to see Eagle Bluff Lighthouse. We weren't able to go in the lighthouse because it was still early and not yet open. It was okay from the outside. We also went to see the Eagle Tower. Since it was raining and dark clouds were all over, we did not see the nice view that this spot is known for.

Simply the most beautiful spot in all of Wisconsin. This park has a nice campground along the…read morePeshtigo River, and the park itself has trails snaking all over. Stop in here for a breathtaking view of the Peshtigo from one of the picturesque foot bridges that criss cross the numerous islands and side channels and the entrance of Swamp Creek into the Peshtigo. The islands themselves have quaint little cabins that can be used to protect your food from the insects and the elements during a summer picnic, party, or family reunion. There are numerous grills and firepit/grills with chimneys. These things are so cool! The park looks like it should be teaming with trout because it is home to every type of prime trout habitat. Within 100 yards there are rapids, riffles, pools, runs, pocket water, sand and boulder structure, timber, and more. However, I have yet to ever see much less hook into anything. But it is nice to enjoy such a beautiful scene. There is a trail that connects this park to Goodman Park. Be careful to go left when nearing the beaver dam, as the trail skirts the damn, and it is treacherous if you are in a hurry.

Just because I give this place three stars doesn't mean it is unworthy of a visit…read more This is a pretty 25 foot water fall that tumbles over the Niagara escarpment onto an accessible river bed. Two small parking lots on both ends of the park give barely ample spots to leave your car for the easy walk to the falls. There is a foot bridge that crosses the top of the falls allowing you to look down on the falls. A major highway is a stone's throw from this bridge. At the other end of the park it a rustic stairway that takes to down to the river bed and gives you a nice view of the falls. Interesting that there are a myriad of padlocks on the stairway steps. This park also includes a statue of Jean Nicolet, who was a French fur trader and made first contact with the local tribes. There is also a historical marker with information about his experience of the local area. This is a nice spot to visit; but you'll share your time there with a lot of people. While this is a pretty spot worth your time to visit, I hesitate to give this place four or five stars. If you give this place five stars, what do you give Big Manitou Falls or Amnicon Falls? Bottom line, this is a pretty spot worth the time to visit. Take the time, there is no such thing as an ugly waterfall.
