I bought one of John's Groupons when they came out, and called him that same day to schedule...had been dying to get the kids portraits done so I could trim my little one's curly shaggy fro. Had to get pics first. John was super easy to schedule with, then was also really flexible when I needed to reschedule. The day he came, before his arrival, my daughter had decided that she didn't want her photo made, period. She let everyone in the neighborhood know about it - loudly and endlessly. John handled it just right by taking her older and younger brothers and working with them to get what he could. He took them outside and made it look like so much fun that my daughter eventually wandered outside, curious, and after a little while longer of watching from above us on the deck, she finally joined in, and he was able to coax her into some adorable poses and facial expressions. The photos came back fantastic. He got some beautiful shots of my kids. Some were straightforward and clear portraits (that pleased my mom..."I can see their faces!") and some were more artistic. There is one kind of 'upshot' that my husband just loves of the two boys that he says looks like an album cover. He got several shots of my older son that look exactly like headshots for a modeling portfolio. Nice editing as well, not too heavy handed, but polished. We recently had our first photoshoot with John for our baby's six month birthday. We had the bad luck of choosing the coldest morning in Austin, but despite the weather, John was able to capture lots of great pics of our little girl. We were so pleased to get an online gallery filled with options. He had the great suggestion to bring changes of clothes, and combined with location changes, it was like getting multiple shoots rolled into one. The hardest part has been narrowing down our selections since there are so many great pics to choose from. I highly recommend him -- he's a dad, so he knows how to work well with babies and kids. Getting good shots of an infant is not easy! My point-and-shoot efforts at home are evidence of that. It's nice to get some professional photos that we can frame and share with family. We had a wonderful experience with John! We have had a handful of sessions with other photographers and we have learned taking family photos with small children can be exhausting and extremely stressful which ultimately comes across in the photos. Our experience with John was exactly the opposite. He made it a very comfortable and pleasant experience. We could not be more pleased with our photos. We had a relaxing and fun photo session with him in July 2011. I was very pregnant at the time and we had our 2 year old son with us but he created such a fun and relaxing atmosphere that everything went very smoothly. He was listening our suggestions and was willing to try things that we wanted to do but yet he had tons of good, easy to deliver, ideas himself. We had John take family pictures for us in an outdoor setting. We have two small children and he did a great job to capture their personalities and get us some really great pictures. He was easy to work with and was flexible to rearrange our photo shoot when our daughter needed stitches on her forehead after a playground accident the day before the scheduled appointment! He was so patient with the boys and he seemed to know exactly when to change things up to keep them happy. John seems to have a knack for capturing my kids 'real' smiles, not the cheesy ones they offer up when they think they're having a picture taken. We now have some fantastic pictures that look like the kids (unlike our school photos). We have some really beautiful posed shots, but I think I may even like the candids better.
