This was a bit of a surprise we discovered when scouting for places to visit near Lake Placid. This visitor center is neat and clean. The guide was informative but almost stoic, delivering a relatively straightforward narrative about the homestead and grounds. Definitely a place for reflection and contemplation, especially considering the political turmoil our country continues to endure.

Stopped by here for a quick visit while I was in town on September 15th. A great place to learn about one of the darkest chapters in American history. The site is easy to walk through with everything nearby. I wish I'd been in town for one of the events, but as a historian it was cool to see this site with a powerful connection to a pivotal time in U.S. history.

We'd been to Lake Placid many times before we finally took the time to check out John Brown's Farm and boy, were we happy we did! The two times we visited, it did not appear to be open, so we weren't able to take the tour or enter the barn, however we enjoyed our visits nonetheless. It's a beautiful property just off the main drag as you drive into Lake Placid. Open fields, views of the ski jumps, and beautiful flowers in the summer months. It's also quite the hot spot for wedding/engagement/family photos, and after a few minutes, you'll see why! We reviewed the map provided which outlined the various buildings on the property and also read some of the history of John Brown on the informational boards posted. There are a few statues and buildings you can explore and then be on your way. It would also be a great spot for a picnic lunch, as there as some picnic tables in the rear and fantastic scenery with the small pond and rolling fields. We also checked out the trails behind the farm, where we were told dogs could run off leash and found the trails to be well-maintained, clearly marked, and shaded. Beautiful flowers lined the path as well. Our pup can't wait for his next visit here!

About 3 miles of family friendly trails. Highly recommended for the history.

You'll enjoy the 'tour' if open and love the easy walk along the wooded path. Kids 5 and up can do this beautiful walk even if the farm is closed the day you arrive.

Walked into this narrow and dainty candy, chocolate, cookies and gifts shop while visiting…read more The proprietor was leaned against the back shelf, face immersed in a book on 'Frida Kahlo' - there was not really a stimulating greeting when we entered the store.. Nevertheless, the quantity and quality of the sweets, goods and filled candies in this small shop was simply awe inspiring! There were all sorts of candied lumps of caramel, cherry, chocolate, almond, truffles, pistachio and you can't name each variety you could think of.. Cappuccino, Oreo, double chocolate, whiskey filled and nut covered hand made chocolate clusters of all shapes flavors. One orders the amount, which is paid by weight (weighed on an electronic scale - professionally) and then they are each boxed in tiny green boxes. This place makes a great bet for gifts for women in your family, as a dinner-gift for invitations to a local dinner party at somebody's home, as a small gift to bring home or just to have a relaxed dessert at home with an espresso. When I tried the chocolates outside after my purchase, I did notice a bit of inconsistency in the hardness of a few nut clusters; this leads me to think that they are only refilled when they sell out one tray.. but that is a minor quip. The smooth, rounded chocolate bonbons were impeccable & soft!! I will come back to this wonderful tiny speck. Candy's Adirondack chocolates are haute 'chocolaterie': a veritable oasis for anyone with a sweet tooth!! Simply magnificent (I should write a longer review..)! Review: 5+

While staying in Lake Placid I came here for dinner on a Tuesday night, getting there around 6PM,…read morethey had a decent amount of people sat inside and on their back deck. I sat on the back deck, overlooking Mirror Lake and it was beautiful, especially in the summer evening. Menu is simple Italian with all the normal, popular Italian dishes, nothing really unique, but plenty of delicious options. I started with their meatball appetizer - They were very nice! The order comes with two huge meatballs that are very tender and nicely seasoned. The sauce was slightly light in flavor and not as thick as I would have liked, but still pretty good. Their table bread they brought out with it came with a very tasty olive oil that was seasoned with garlic and herbs. The bread was served warmed, slightly toasted and was great. Next up was their basic starter salad - this was pretty nice too. Dressing was good and veggies were fresh. My entrée was their Rigatoni Ala Vodka - This was really good. The flavors were perfect and the pasta was perfectly al dente. Overall, I thought dinner was great. Service was excellent and attentive too. Definitely would return, especially if I could sit on that back deck!!

Don't expect white glove service; however, be patient and prepare to enjoy your meal. We were very pleasantly surprised-both dishes were perfectly cooked, arrived got, and had great flavor. Pro tip: get the fried mozzarella (with homemade marinara)!
