Went here for a talk by Josh Brolin due to his new book. The area that I was in was well maintained and very clean. The sound was clear, seats were comfortable, found close street parking.

The science magnet program is outstanding, kids enrolled in the program get to go on a trip to Catalina and Yosemite.

The experience that both of my children have had at the school has been life-changing for them and for us. My 3rd grader, who was struggling in K-2, felt so welcomed. The teachers and the administration care so much about these kids. And the way that they teach, makes the kids absolutely love going to school. There are a lot of projects that allow the kids to apply their learning in real life situations. My then 3rd grader graduated last year and was extremely prepared for high school and is getting all As at a prestigious private scho Another thing that stands out for me about WNS is that the kids learn how to work things out with each other, how to communicate with each other and to teachers; the kids are able to have mature conversations with each other when things don't go as expected. The school provides a strong presence in the neighborhood and supports students, but the way they handle traffic and maintenance creates major quality-of-life issues for nearby residents. During the school year, parents often block driveways during drop-off and pick-up, making it frustrating for those of us who live here. Even after raising the issue, it continues regularly. On top of that, maintenance teams sometimes use leaf blowers as early as 6:30 a.m., even during the summer months when school isn't in session. It would be a huge improvement if the school scheduled this work at later hours. I respect the school's mission, but I hope they'll consider how their operations impact the surrounding community.

No, parents will go out of their way (literally) to drive their kids to the trendiest charter, magnet, immersion, etc. But look at what gets lost, the whole well-being of the child. Do they have nice teachers who know about their hobbies? Do they have nice playgrounds and plenty of space to run and play? Do they have parents who look after other kids as a community? Certainly, Short Avenue has a STEAM-focused curriculum, Planet Bravo computer lab, theater and visual arts, classical language LATIN instruction, Chess Tutors, LEGO Engineering, and a free after school program for working families. They're all great, but really, it's the people (parents, teachers, and students) who make this little school remarkable.

Mrs. Johnson, as a first year principal has exceeded my expectations. She is very accessible and responsive and not by any means an elitist. This school is very diverse as evident when roll call starts in the morning. Our child has learned about STEM subjects and has learned about different cultures extensively. To say that Mrs. Johnson will strip this school of its ethnicity , culture and financial diversity is hard to believe possible. We were asked and reminded nicely about the suggested donation, we gave it and have given more when asked. I believe this happens at most schools and districts. Our child gets music , art , science lab , computer lab , PE and all of the things I remember getting at Irvine Unified. With the funds raised and given to the school, a curriculum writer was hired to establish a STEM education. There seems to be a solid vision for this school , which is backed by LMU and LAUSD. If you want a high academic expectation from the teachers for your children ,a safe environment, knowledgable and caring staff , then this is a great school
