St. Gumbertus Church is one of the central city churches of Ansbach located in the Altstadt (Old…read moreTown). St. Gumbertus, now an Evangelish-Lutherisches (Lutheran) church, was originally the church of a monastery that was founded by St. Gumbert around 750. Perhaps the most significant feature about this church is it contains the oldest structures in Ansbach and is considered Ansbach's city symbol. It houses a famous pipe organ built from 1736 to 1739; the original organ had 47 different sounds, was the largest and most prestigious organ in the region of Franconia. It was rebuilt in 1884 in romantic style using materials of the older organ and again in 1961 in neo-Baroque style. In 2004, the church council decided to have the historic organ restored. If you are fortunate enough, you may be able to listen in as an organist practice on late Saturday morning like we did today. It was very nice hearing some J. S. Bach played.
