I just saw Joelle and was totally impressed. She is so kind and knowledgeable. When she treated me I knew I was being treated by a real healer. I walked out a different person then when I arrived. Her office is relaxing, clean and convenient with transportation and parking garage easily accessible. I highly recommend her. read more

Joelle is so helpful and I was sort of skeptical about acupuncture because it really hadn't worked well in the past. This time for a work related injury involving muscles and nerves. Even after one treatment I felt much better and there was no need for me to use ice or heat that night!! This injury had gone on for months but after several treatments in combination with my regular doctor, I'm finally seeing a light at the end of the tunnel! I can't recommend Joelle enough. She's very helpful. :-) read more

A few months ago, I realized that I had a repetitive stress injury to my elbow. Several folks told me that they had it and that acupuncture was the only thing that helped. Since I'm absolutely terrified of needles and a believer in western medicine, I decided I'd rather french kiss a blender. The pain didn't go away and after tons of whining, my friend called Joelle for me and made an appointment. She was so understanding of my phobia, I decided to give her a chance. Joelle was beyond patient with me. She's gentle and calming. Best of all, the pain went away after a handful of sessions. I'd highly recommend her! read more

I finally made an appointment with Joelle after being dissatisfied with the improvement of my migraines with medications and boy do I wish I came here sooner! As a UCSF student, your health insurance will cover your acupuncture visits with Joelle if your primary care provider refers you! That means you'll save on the $125 for the first visit and $95 subsequent visits. Joelle was recommended to me by Dr. Reynolds at student health after I expressed some interest in alternative medicine and after another patient was successfully treated by Joelle for her migraines. From the UCSF campus, Joelle's business is about a 30 minute walk. Her business is located in a residential area without an obvious business sign so be careful if you're looking for a huge advertisement because there isn't. Instead, there is a small placard with Joelle's name and telephone number at the entrance onsite. You walk up a set of stairs, follow the signs and Joelle's office is to the left. Once you enter the office, you truly feel like you've stepped into a spa. Joelle is also a warm and friendly person so you feel even more at ease. She was very attentive to my thoughts and concerns, never condescending which made it easy for me to open up to her. She's very confident and knowledgeable and to top it off, extremely caring. She took the extra steps to e-mailing me directions to her office and e-mailing me an ointment she recommended after I left. I wanted to probe her brain some more but she was so busy catering to her other clients. Yes, you need to make an appointment because she's busy! You can expect about an hour session with her. Once I was done, she told me I'd should expect an increase in the range of motion in my neck and you know what? I do! I never realized the tension was there. I've been to masseuse's and chiropractors and haven't felt so much relief in a while. I'm returning this Friday for a cupping session and will keep you updated! read more

The California Department of Insurance states that this practice, "Billing a patient more than the co-pay amount for services that were pre-paid or paid in full by the benefit plan under the terms of a managed care contract," is illegal. Joelle is a healer. I went to her to address debilitating hot flashes and within 3 treatments over 2 weeks, the frequency and severity of my hot flashes decreased significantly and after 5 treatments, they were gone. This was life changing as I had been experiencing 10-15 per day and countless at night impacting every aspect of my life. Joelle listens both to you and your body and uses her knowledge and experience to provide relief. Her office is very calm and peaceful and she gives each patient the time and attention needed. Joelle is an amazing life saver. She is very energetic, positive, considerate and professional in her line of work. I was recommended to see her by my internal medicine doctor for treating chronic neck and shoulder pain. She has helped me get over this chronic pain within a few months using acupuncture, cupping and herbal patches. Since then, Joelle has also been a savior in diagnosing and treating my other health issues, including chronic acid reflux, chronic seasonal allergies, morning sickness, lower back pain, sciatic pain - basically you name it. I'm so thankful to have met her and enjoyed her amazing treatments and have recommended her to many many friends and family members. read more

I came to Joelle walking like a robot because I couldn't turn my neck or move my arms abruptly without getting a intense cramping. Within two sessions, I felt relief. I have gone to her twice a week for the last month and I feel so much better. I can now turn my neck and reach for things whenever I fancy. Joelle is also a warm person and I enjoy our conversations. I feel like she really cares whether I am improving or not and will listen to me describe even the slightest pain. Also, I recommend trying cupping before you try massage. It's a strange sensation at first, but by my fourth visit, I found that it was incredibly soothing and gave me better results than massage. Never thought I'd recommend skipping a massage, but there it is- Joelle's cupping is better than any massage!! read more

OK, I'm another needle-phob, and my previous 2 attempts with different acupuncturists were disasters. I suffered so much nerve pain and ache to my very bones...I swore off this type of treatment as NOT for me ever again! But then a serious lung infection and asthma flare up made me desperate to breath again, I went to Joyce after a strong recommendation from a trusted friend. WOW, what a difference these sessions were, no real after pains and I felt very well monitored by Joyce for any reactions or discomfort. I strongly recommend her treatment for anyone esp. the extra sensitive!! read more

I thought that acupuncture was nonsense but a friend (Chinese friend) recommended her to me. I saw her for an infection that wouldn't go away....she's incredible. The decor is French zen. It's soothing and relaxing. She doesn't try to sell you "packages" or any gimmicky stuff you don't need... (she will actually try to simplify what you are currently doing if need be...) I like her style. She's very knowledgable and approachable. Oh... and my insurance covered it. Yup. I have recommended many friends to her... because she helped me when western medicine couldn't (but don't get me wrong... I'm not saying that western medicine is bad... it just treats the symptoms sometimes... ) read more

As an integrated health practicioner providing physical therapy at Healthwell, and always searching for talented people with exceptional skills who value the team approach, Joelle is a star! She does needles, we do body work...she adds herbs, we add Feldenkrais and myofascial release.... we communicate great and I appreciate that she's no nonsense....her depth and training and experience differentiates her from 95% of other providers, and yet she's understated, interesting and interested.....plus my sinus infection went away in three visits and my C1 is sitting straighter....how much better does it get?!!! read more

I have been receiving acupuncture since moving to San Francisco in 1997. The first practitioner I saw was a bit of an oddball. The second wasn't an oddball, but wasn't very good at treating my allergies. Then eight years ago I found Joelle. I now see her for allergies, headaches and pretty much anything else that doesn't feel right. She's knowledgeable, kind and her studio is always clean and inviting. If you're looking for an acupuncturist, you will not go wrong here. read more

I started acupunture sessions with Joelle due to a work-related wrist and shoulder injury from over-typing and mousing (she is accredited by the workers comp program at UCSF). My visits to her have been really helpful, and over time, she not only treated my wrist and arm injuries, but also problems with digestion, stress, sleep, the flu, and also personal problems! I always feel rested and great after a one-hour session. Joelle is also very knowledgable and shows a genuine interest in me and my overall well-being, which makes me feel comfortable in discussing with her various my health issues. Because of her, I've also started using herbal remedies vs prescription drugs, and it has been working out really well. Im now a convert to acupuncture and herbal medicine! I definitely recommend it especially for pregnant women and others who may have bad reactions to traditional medicine. read more

As a life coach, I rely heavily upon excellent integrative health practitioners for myself and my clients. I recently met Joelle and found her to be both professional and intuitive. I had been having problems with my right leg - ankle, knee, and hip - all which affected my mobility. My doctor gave me a cortisone treatment and told me to see a podiatrist. After a few treatments, my mobility has improved and I am feeling so much better! Don't put off calling her another moment! read more

Amazing work. Visited on the suggestion of a coworker for lower back pain and happy I did. Results!

Joelle is fantastic! I don't have any specific problems but I go there to get tweaked and re-calibrated especially when I'm stressed out from work. She's very knowledgeable and have been doing this for a long time, accommodating w/ your schedule and take time to assess what's going on in your life so we can appropriately treat you. The needles surprisingly barely hurt! Her treatment rooms are tastefully decorated - I almost feel like I'm at the spa! If you're into meditation, I'd recommend listening to your meditation during the session. What a great way to relax! read more

Needles Never Felt So Good I've been seeing Joelle for over 5 years to treat my chronic illness and I must say that she is the top in her field. I went through about 10 different acupuncturists before I found her. No one else could really get it right to help give me relief. The great thing about Joelle is that even though she's been doing acupuncture for over 20 years, she continues to educate herself by going to conferences to learn about the latest techniques and breakthroughs in alternative medicine. What you can expect when you see her is a warm, welcoming atmosphere. She's professional, yet friendly. I also like that her treatment rooms are in her very nice home in the Castro. It feels more like visiting a friend than getting a medical treatment when you see her. Joelle is very supportive in the healing process. Recently I had horrible pain in my upper abdomen. I was in severe pain for 3 days and only left my bed to see a doctor at Kaiser. The doctor said that I had a UTI which didn't seem correct since my symptoms were different than what's typical for that kind of infection. I saw Joelle a couple weeks later and told her what happened. It took her less than a minute to figure out I had gallbladder problems and was probably passing a stone. I went back to Kaiser, saw a different doctor and she confirmed that I was originally misdiagnosed. I'm so grateful that Joelle discovered this problem. I probably would have gone on without getting proper treatment if it hadn't been for her. read more

Hot flashes? Sleeplessness? Anxiety? Your family ready to trade you in? Before you despair run, don't walk to see Joelle. She is a gift from heaven. Aside from being an EXCELLENT acupuncturist, Joelle is a superb healthcare provider. Looking at the total you she helps you correct problems you didn't even realize were correctable. I started to go to Joelle years ago when I was experiencing never ending migraines. Not only did she get those under control, but I began ovulating (at the age of 38 - medicine didn't do it); began sleeping better and even was able to release the anger over my divorce. Prone to bronchitis, I run to Joelle when I get a cold and she does something that results in me feeling as if my lungs have been vacuumed so that my cold, stays a cold and I can get on with my life! On top of all of this Joelle is warm and funny, doesn't put down conventional medicine and sees herself as part of your healthcare team. She's the best! read more

Joelle has truly changed my life! I've had a mixed bag of acupuncture experiences since relocating from the East Coast and I was lucky enough to find Joelle through the UCSF Womens' Health Center. Joelle has been a wonderful resource for me at the end of pregnancy. She is knowledgable, warm, and kind. Her office is very relaxing and a great place to get care. I have never had acupuncture treatment before I received care from Joelle. The end of my pregnancy was stressful with a major loss that precipitated anxiety, poor sleep, high stress levels and ultimately elevated blood pressure that would have resulted in early induction of labor. Fortunately, Joelle was very helpful in treating all of these symptoms and conditions. Acupuncture was part of a holistic treatment plan that let me continue my grieving process but get some rest, normalize my blood pressure, and carry my baby to full term. read more

Joelle is even better than the 5 star reviews on yelp. I was visiting San Francisco for work and experiencing the worst back pain of my life. Desperate for releif, I decided I would try acupuncture for the first time but with extremely limited availability, I had little hope of making an appointment. Joelle was kind enough to see me that day, she listened to and clearly understood my complaints. She worked with me for over an hour, and made sure she addressed each area of discomfort. Not only did this first time experience open me up to the healing power of acupuncture, Joelle was able to releave nearly all of my pain in just one session. I'm now a firm believer in acupuncture and a grateful fan of Joelle. Just wish I had her in my home town! read more

I saw Joelle after a car accident where I was "t-boned". I only had a lump on the side of my head, but my entire body felt like it had been hit by the car. One treatment significantly restored movement to my stiff wrist. I want to recommend Joelle's services very highly. I have been to her several times for treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome and also to help 'induce' the birth of my baby near the due date. She is very knowledgeable, with ample experience, so you can trust you are in safe hands under her care. The location is also very convenient. read more

Joelle is a star in her field and a life saver for me. I arrived in her office as the result of a very painful injury to my neck and had already seen several providers who had been less than helpful. I will admit that by the time I saw her, I wasn't optimistic that she could help me either and I was exhausted from months of unrelenting pain. After only one session I experienced a significant decrease in pain and even relaxed! I am now a firm believer in the benefits of acupuncture administered by an expert. Joelle is smart, funny, caring, extremely knowledgeable, very experienced and really listens to me. Her treatment space is peaceful, clean and comfortable. I look forward to each session we have as I know I will feel better both physically and emotionally afterward. If you are in pain of any sort go see her now! read more

Joelle is amazing! I started seeing her about in early 2009 at the suggestion of a friend. I had always wanted to see an acupuncturist but had never had the cause. At the time, I was getting chiropractic and massage every week for back, neck and shoulder pain. After only a couple of visits w/ Joelle, I was significantly better. So much so, that I didn't need to see the chiropractor as often and stopped massage. I felt more relaxed after leaving her office than any massage I've gotten (and it's cheaper). Additionally, the relaxed feeling lasts for days afterward. Now, I'm pain free. It probably took 6 or 8 visits. I still see her when my neck gets tweaked for some reason. After 1 appt, I'm better. read more

joelle is a true healer. i had the first-hand experience of her immense talent a few years ago after having 'been volunteered' by a friend to move her neighbor's piano. the next day, i had such a severe spasm in my sacro-iliac joint that i couldn't sit down, lie down, or straighten up. i almost crawled to joelle's office. i looked like an ape. she planted needles in my hands and behind my knees. i won't lie and say that they weren't extremely painful. nonetheless, within an hour i was on my feet and returned to the gym to train my last two clients. after work, i went back to finish the treatment. she nurtured me through my fear, and gave me relief that would have been unimaginable a few hours before. every time i have a crick in my neck or my back, i see joelle so that she can loosen me up and reduce the spasm. if that is insufficient, i go to my chiropractor. i absolutely HATE needles, but i wouldn't dream of seeing my chiropractor (brian lyttle, who is amazing himself) without going to joelle beforehand. i can't imagine getting my neck cracked when i'm in so much pain. but the needles work. joelle also uses suction cups and massage to soothe the inflamed tissue. in fact, she usually treats my syndrome with such success that i don't need to see brian. (oops. sorry, brian!) joelle is gentle and knowledgeable. she has a wicked sense of humor, too, which helps while i'm being stuffed full of needles. i send all of my clients and friends to her... in the words of cole porter, she's the tops. read more
