I've purchased a number of "sale" ornaments here because I'm obsessed with Christmas ornaments (give me time and my tree won't even be visible anymore), they were cute and they were on sale. I visited during the colder months and was impressed by how much well-chosen winter gear they had--cozy layers, warm accessories, and practical pieces that still look stylish. Wow, hard to believe no one has reviewed Howl yet…read more We visited Bayfield over Labor Day, staying at a B&B down the road. Before leaving Minneapolis, we booked a half-day yacht cruise for Saturday morning, which turned out to be lovely. The reason I mention the cruise is that our captain also owns Howl (as well as the Howl Adventure Center just south of town). We stopped into the retail store the following morning as we dodged raindrops, enjoying a chat with the captain and his family. I would characterize the clothing and equipment on the shelf here (as well as the Adventure Center) as "upper end" although insufficient to completely supply many an outdoor trek. That said, the equipment on sale was interesting, reasonably priced, not overly "touristy" (although there were some items geared to the visiting tourist). As an aging backpacker, it was very difficult to not pick up a few items, but I've vowed not to buy more "stuff" until I get my knees replaced! I did succumb to a few bicycling accessories at the Adventure Center, however! Howl Clothing is right downtown, just a block away from the docks and right across the street from the Bayfield Inn. It's worth stopping in to browse, and we will use their sailing services when next we visit during the summer.

I was also obsessed with their dog-themed book section and literally laughed out loud when I saw their "banned book" shelves. This is the kind of space that sparks joy. They have a cool patio out back to hang out and read that is (of course) dog friendly! And besides books, they also had some unique trinkets and merchandise for purchase. I walked away with a mystery by a local author that I never would've found without this nifty bookshop.

It's a small shop but it's brimming with books. On one visit, it was a bit crowded (I like to really linger over shelves of books and felt like it was a bit too busy for that). So I came back a second time when they were a bit less busy. I love when bookshops offer recommendations from their workers--the best! They have a shelf full of fun recommendations and I was able to pick up my next read there. A top notch experience at a top notch local bookseller. Get to it!

Little remark though. Was here for at least twenty minutes browsing through the books and yarns and I saw no staff...... Meanwhile, two ladies we're busy downstairs discussies things. So a wide variety of yarns and patterns for crochette and knitting, but no so big in service. Downstairs you'll find all kind of things. Clothes, shoes, little gifts.
