Be very careful to ask Jeff what you're getting with this ride. We paid $175 for a ride we thought was longer but ended up being 1 hr. exactly. It is basically a nose to tail loop... walk only. Much of the ride is along a busy road & it's all flat terrain.... Definitely not worth the price we paid. As we were all experienced riders, we had hoped maybe even a little trotting, there were only 3 of us. This wouldn't be such a bad ride for beginners but NOT for $175! If you have experience & want to enjoy more scenery, I'd go to one of the outfitters higher up in the mountains. read more

Cowboy Jeff was a wonderful guide and we all had the very best time on his horses. What a memorable trail ride! Thank you!

Taking our granddaughter on a trail ride and Cowboy Jeff cane highly recommend from a friend who their children spoke highly about! I'm so thankful! You never know what you are dealing with anymore so I was very happy to get this recommendation. Now I'm passing it on to you! Easy road to get to the Ranch. Greeted by RIP the Australian Shepherd. Cowboy Jeff got us all hooked up and we started right on time. He's a great guy with an answer to every question! Really great ole Cowboy that loves his job, the animals and the area. Took us on a 90 minute trail ride. Horses knew exactly what to do. No need to know how to ride. These horses know it all. We crossed small creeks and through brush. Was awesome! Exactly what I was hoping! read more

Amazing opportunity to horseback in the back country of LoLo National Forest. My daughter and I signed up for the half day ride and it was worth every penny. The four hour ride gave an opportunity to learn the personalities and quirks of the horses which was fun. Remote ride, we didn't see another soul while we were out there. The day was made even better because we saw a bear on the hillside of the trail while we were riding. read more

The experience was so great it is almost impossible to describe with words alone, and I can only encourage everyone to try it out! The day we were there we had a mixed group of children and adults ranging from no riding experience to experienced riders and I believe everyone had the time of their lives. The horses are beautiful and in great shape. I didn't know horses could be so athletic, navigating over rocks and through water so adeptly. The ride was amazing in an amazing scenery and what they allow you to discover of your own ability to interact with the horses and ride them is amazing. The JM family were awesome. They know how to guide a ride that is both relaxed and structured/well-directed. Knowledgable instruction and encouragement by our wranglers to try things out and push a bit past one's own comfort zone! They are smart regarding safety and yet provide a great time. Needless to say at the end of a long day we gladly paid the amount asked, which I would consider a bargain for what was offered. It makes you wish to come back and back again and even spend days at JM Bar. Do go, even if you are not experienced riders, which we were not. This is an experience far beyond just a ride. read more

What an amazing way to spend one of our last afternoons in Missoula. Jeff was an incredible trail guide. He really made us feel welcomed and showed us several points of interest throughout the ride. He was kind enough to take pictures at the end and even let me help bring the horses out to graze afterwards. Our horses were a dream on the trail and made us laugh several times with their grazing on the go. I highly recommend making the short drive out to this beautiful place. It is sure to be a highlight of any trip. read more

Our family enjoyed a trail ride and steak dinner creekside with Jeff and his crew. We couldn't have been happier. Jeff and Tori took time to match the horses with each persons riding ability. Everyone had a fantastic ride and saw some great scenery and wildlife too. Our dinner was great and the setting was perfect. Thick steaks, perfectly cooked and tasted great. I'll definitely recommend my friends to come see for themselves. Thank you! read more

We went for a 2 hr trail ride with my daughter and two grandsons. What a wonderful experience. Horses were great and Jeff was so nice and fun to talk to. Saw a massive eagles nest and several deer. We still talk about it all the time and how beautiful the drive was to get to the ranch. Thanks Jeff for a great time. We will be back for sure. read more

I'm giving this a 3 star review because we loved Jeff. He was very personable and kind, but there are some red flags here that should not be blown aside. We purchased the two hour trail ride for eight people. All, but one person could be considered novice/beginner and three were riding for the first time. We had children with us - 10, 11, 13 and the rest were adults. First, he does not have helmets and seemed to think it was strange that we asked if he did. So, we did find helmets for rent at the bike shop in Missoula (near the U of M campus) for $5.00/day. We did rent the helmets. The web site photos look very peaceful and serene - and nothing is more beautiful then Montana! The web site lists trail riding "June, July, August & some Sept." Well, I called for mid- May for an event surrounding my daughters U of Montana graduation. I think the real reason they do the trail rides during these months is that the waters are lower and the horses get ridden a lot. Perhaps both our inexperience in riding and the horses not having been ridden in a long while left them a bit spooky. The photo of the girl in the blue & pink shirt on the web site - she is on the same horse "Casper" that my daughter (age 13) was on - that took off super fast and she had to jump off as we hit open pasture. My other daughter (age 19) was a complete novice/first timer and her horse "Chip" absolutely did not want to be ridden - she ended up getting nearly bucked off and walked as we hit the open pasture. As the two escaped horses ran off the other six horses wanted to run as well - and it was scary that at any moment anything could have happened. You forget that these they are animals. You think that a sweet relaxing trail ride doesn't present any dangers. Don't be fooled. The bulk of us had an incredible time. The views are spectacular. Should you trail ride? It was really fun, but you need to really think through what could happen. Later when tying up the horses a neighbor told Jeff that a moose was on its way up the creek and he took us all to go find it - sure enough we found the moose with its head in a pond eating. We were later told "It's a good thing we didn't run into the moose on the trail - the horses hate moose and they could have easily taken off and gone crazy." So I feel that we dodged a bullet. We had children with us and luckily the two who jumped off their horses - left with only scrapes. It was a memorable trail ride - would I do it again? Yes, but I would not bring children who were inexperienced and I might not ride horses early in the season when they weren't used to riding. But I can't even describe how beautiful Rock Creek is - a river really does run threw it! read more

A beautiful trail ride through pastures surrounded by stunning moutain scenery, creeks, a roaring river. Peppy, reponsive horses that don't move at a snail's pace. Friendly guide and a fun trail. Highly recommend it. Just outside of Missoula. read more
