After watching a movie, we were looking for a late night spot to grab some dinner. We walked up…read moreCuba Street and eventually settled on Top Kitchen. They're one of those Chinese places that do ALL the Asian cuisines (Singaporean, Malaysian, Szechuan, etc.). We dropped in on a Sunday evening (around 9:15pm). The place surprisingly had people in it along with several others that grabbed takeout. The food comes out lightning quick! The menu is huge; entrees, soup, BBQ dishes, soup, hot plate, meats (chicken, pork, beef & lamb), vegetables & tofu, rice, fried rice, fried noodle and noodle/soup. Like I said, typical massive menu. - Beef tendon hot & sour noodle soup (N.7) ($12.90 NZD) - this was the best dish. The hot & sour soup had a nice kick to it. Bits of chili flakes. The cellophane/clear noodles had a great bite to them. There was a few peanuts and cilantro thrown in too. Beef was a tad dry. - Singaporean fried vermicelli (M.12) ($12.90 NZD) - it doesn't look like your typical Singaporean noodle dish but the flavour was pretty close. Only bad thing was the amount of MSG in this dish. Way too salty. Totally unnecessary as the wok hei was there. - Szechuan style chicken with vegetables (F.11) ($15.80 NZD) - I wouldn't necessarily call this Szechuan style (no heat or numbness to it) but it was tasty. Good mix of vegetables including broccoli, cauliflower, wood ear and button mushrooms, zucchini, onion and carrots. Chicken was tender. Solid but pretty standard dish. Too many types of Asian dishes on the menu but I was a fan of the noodle soup.

I ordered the Aubergine vegetarian ramen with green curry- the menu was a bit confusing so I double checked which was vegan or vegetarian. They also had what they call Dry Ramen which is seemed interesting to be but I wanted regular ramen. When my Dish arrived it was big! Had a half eggplant in the whole thing but it was delicious!! I really enjoyed the flavor, it was creamy, spicy, and warm! I just wished I had a microwave so I could warm up leftovers because I wasn't able to finish the whole meal. The staff were very kind and on our way out we decided to get one of their pastries- which was also delicious. They also had sushi which my husband got and enjoyed. I'd recommend this spot if you're vegetarian and in need of some ramen in addition to the Japanese pastries!!

We started with an order of Takoyaki (always happy to see those rare octopus balls on a menu outside of Japan). They weren't as good as the ones in Japan but that's to be expected. But they were still very tasty. We also ordered the yellow noodles with beef and their version of fried chicken and rice. I oversimplified the menu. The names were all Japanese so it was hard to remember but basically look for the ingredients I mentioned. Plus they cook the food with egg and onions and their sauces so it all comes out incredibly delicious! I ended up mixing the rice with the noodle dish and that made an excellent combination. We wanted to find dessert somewhere else but the ones at the restaurant looked amazing! And the people around us ordered some and they seemed to enjoy them very much. Maybe next time for us!

We ordered one plate of dumplings, a side spicy pancake, and a duck noodle bowl The dumplings: it was fantastic to be able to order a variety for our plate (half/half)-we opted for pork & garlic & seafood & coriander. They plate was very well priced-the dumplings were very big, topped with a fancy thin crisp, salad-type shavings, and a home aioli sauce (we weren't asked to pick from the sauces-my only woe)- they were stuffed packed with filling, juicy bites; absolutely delicious. The spicy pancake was smothered in homemade spicy chili sauce. The pancake was crispy not greasy; very hearty bites The duck bowl had slices of perfectly cooked duck over udon noodles, with bokchoy-the broth was quite tasty-the bowl was a decent amount-and the duck was moist with crispy edges- If we lived in the area, this would be a regular takeaway spot for us- I love to try their massive menu variety- everything we had was quite yummy. Order a lot- and share!
