I've had occasion to make it over to this large bakery/cafe just north of downtown C-U for lunch a couple times and never been disappointed. Granted the food (including a couple fantastic side salad options) isn't cheap, but everything is made properly with high quality ingredients and well worth the occasional splurge. Although we have only tried some samples, there's even a fancy coffee cafe within.5 Factor in that all the employees we've met (including the delivery people out in the Central IL grocery stores) have been pleasantly passionate about their products, and you start to understand how they've come to stand out in what seems like a fading industry. That said, it also seems like the shelves with high end grocery items like exotic olive oils, Momofuku noodles, hard to find jams and other condiments, have dwindled in the last year or two, likely due to tariff-based cost models, but you are still likely to find a new favorite 'something' just browsing while they craft your sammy. Even if it's just a 'cronut' or a loaf of that amazing olive ciabatta or sourdough, it is becoming a mandatory C-U stop for us.

The matzo ball soup cup had dark meat chicken and didn't have a lot of flavor. It's also a very tiny cup. The garden salad was delicious and fresh, however. The side of coleslaw was also good. Maybe next time I'll try a sandwich or their focaccia pizza slices. Plenty of parking and lots of options for lunch.

Over the last 15 years or more I've been to this establishment maybe 4-5 times; each time I go, I…read moreremember why it's been years since my last visit and I tell myself it wasn't worth it to return when there are so many other options available. This place is incredibly expensive for what you get with regard to the food and the service (or essentially lack thereof). At this time, full simple sandwiches are $12-14 with no sides included (think typical ham and turkey with cheese, tomato, and lettuce with mayo on it that you can make at home), and soups are nearly $8 for a cup and $9 for a bowl. The sandwiches (and "Mexican" fare) have fresh ingredients, but are very mediocre and bland tasting given their simplicity--not remotely worth that price. The high pricing isn't to cover wait staff/cleaning staff or maintaining the facility itself. Orders are taken at the counter and you await to hear your name called to get your food yourself, then rid of all your waste yourself before leaving. The entire dining room was dirty with crumbs on all tables, chairs, and the floor. The trash was full, and the bathroom toilet and urinal both had unflushed waste in them. The place was not busy as it was later afternoon; there were plenty of staff available to keep an eye on the dining room to ensure, at the very least, that the tables and chairs were clean and the trash wasn't full. The building itself is old with a lot(!) of unfinished and inaccessible areas, basic/old tables with cheap "decor". So for over $52 today my spouse and I had two very basic sandwiches, two bowls of semi-warm soup, and two large drinks in a dirty basic dining room after ordering and retrieving the food ourselves. With that price, you'd think the place would be minutely updated and certainly should be cleaner, there would be wait staff, and the food would have much more flavor with much more to it. There are several other places in Monticello to get great tasting food with included sides, cleaner facilities and wait staff, all for less than the price of a basic sandwich that you get here. I love to support small businesses and the staff were certainly friendly so I feel a bit guilty for this review, but this needs to be said about this incredibly overhyped place. This time I won't forget why I infrequent this establishment and won't be back.

First off, there is a bit of a wait for your order, but trust me, it's worth it. We were there at a prime Saturday lunch hour and the wait was a bit long but I have to tell you, these are REAL 'sandwich artists' that work for this great little place, and they take great care with your order. Plenty of sides to choose from, drinks and homemade pie for dessert, too! I do not order Tuna Salad out bcz I'm always disappointed but I took a chance here at the BBD, and wow did I enjoy my meal. White bread, Tuna Salad, onion and pickle...SO DELICIOUS!!! I was very full after eating the sandwich too. Hubs had the Dagwood Special and totally enjoyed it. Bypass the fast food across the street and visit this great little diner in downtown Monticello. You will be happy you did!

The restaurant smells of bread and soup as soon as you walk in. This is one of those places that you know is actually handmade as soon as it gets put down in front of you. We all ordered half soup/half sandwich meal. But the portions were huge, honestly. We could have shared. I got the lemon pepper chicken sandwich with chicken rice soup, both were actually incredible. My companions got the Reuben and pasta salad, and the sweet potato soup with turkey Reuben. Everything was great. The sweet potato soup is just that, very sweet, molasses flavor - might not be for everyone. The woman that took our order was very kind She shared some knowledge of their breads with us and even gave us a free load of sourdough to take home. They have many different types of breads, rolls, pastries etc available at the counter for pickup, anytime. Many, if not most, of the menu is turkey. We had one person that didn't eat turkey and specifically ordered the Reuben without turkey. The kitchen ran out of pastrami and put turkey on his sandwich. When she told him about the change, and he mentioned not liking turkey, she said well it's actually chicken anyhow. This was really confusing. He took it off and enjoyed the sandwich, but they should be cautious of changing ingredients without asking because of allergies and preferences. The restaurant is very small, with a few tables for dine in. There is no restroom.

I was intrigued by Oy Vey from the very start. I'd never been to a Jewish restaurant before, and…read morewanted to see what flavors I could discover. After eating here, I realized that I had completely underestimated this particular cuisine. The title of this restaurant may be alarming at first, but believe me, "oy vey" will be the last thing you say after tasting these delicious dishes. My family and I got two Reubens, Chicken and Rice soup, Borscht soup, Chicken Shawarma, South African Sweet Potato stew, baklava, and latkes all for about 59 bucks. And pretty much everything was homemade. Because of the great quality and quantity of all these items, I ended up stuffed and satisfied. We start off with their Reuben. I had heard much about this dish from other reviews, and it definitely did not disappoint. The corned beef was well-seasoned, and the sauerkraut was tangy and fresh. The Chicken and Rice soup was good, but could have used a little bit more seasoning. This is compared to the other items, though, so the expectation might have been set too high for this soup. Unlike the Chicken and Rice soup, the Borscht soup was firing up my taste buds with its deep tangy flavor. This dish is vegan, but Oy Vey definitely didn't compromise the flavor due to that classification. And along with the soup came a few pieces of a homemade flatbread that was soft and delicious as well. The Chicken Shawarma was pretty good. Again, the flavor was just a little lacking when compared to some of the other dishes. None of this is enough to take away from my 5-star rating, though. These are just little things that I think could be improved upon. I had the South African sweet potato stew as a side to my Reuben, and wow, was it good. The sweet potato blended perfectly with the mix of spices. This may have been the most flavorful stew I have ever eaten. Now, before I talk about this baklava, I ask you to erase anything you seemingly already know about Greek honey baklava from your mind, because that's not what this is. This baklava was entirely different, and even more scrumptious, in my opinion. Instead of your classic honey topping, this baklava was smothered in a cinnamon sauce. Like I said, a completely different experience, but one that was great in its own way. Last, but definitely not least, we have the latkes. These small, round potato pancakes were also different from the latkes I knew. And again, they were just as good, if not better. They sort of reminded me of fried mashed potatoes. There was also a side of applesauce that came with the order for dipping. The applesauce was also delicious. All in all, our experience at Oy Vey was delectable and filling. Though improvements could be made on some select items, Oy Vey really brings the flavor! So the next time you're in or around Terra Haute, stop by. Your taste buds will be very glad you did!

I'm not a sandwich person, but my 16 year old is, and I wanted something I could eat to-go. You can smell the scent of yummy as you walked into the door. It appears to be a gourmet grocery store, specializing in sushi grade seafood, pasta from Italy, fancy cheeses, meats, caviar, and sodas from around the country. They had diet Cheerwine, even. I've never seen so many different root beers in one place- there was even a pumpkin root beer! There wasn't a BLT on the menu, but they custom made one for my son, and he added pesto and provolone. He declared it the best BLT ever, and knocked his favorite sandwich place back home to second place. I had the Thanksgiving everyday. A $16 buck sandwich, I was skeptical it wasn't going to live up to its price point. However, it was worth every cent. It was turkey, goat cheese, and homemade cranberry sauce on sourdough, and grilled panini style on a press. The turkey was sliced fresh- everything was made fresh. The taste was absolutely amazing. I live in California, but hate most sourdough bread, because that tang tastes spoiled. You don't have that weird taste with Cheese and Crackers sourdough bread- it's just delicious toasted buttered bread. It was the right texture and made it crunch. The crew appeared very hardworking and enjoyed their jobs. We were greeted kindly, and felt welcome. I use a walker, and was able to navigate the store, but note the space is kinda small. Since I don't live here, I'm going to do my best to recreate my sandwich at home. Cheese and Crackers- thanks for teaching me about a delicious flavor combination, and for providing an enjoyable epicurean experience.

This is a decent mid-western home town restaurant with a nice full menu. I have eaten here three times over the past two years and was always happy with what I had. This is a place to have things like a hot roast beef sandwich smothered in gravy, or a meatloaf plate or a variety of sandwiches. They also feature a local "thing" that originated in Springfield and the surrounding area, called a Horseshoe. This is Texas Toast, with a meat selection (turkey, ham or hamburger) covered with a huge pile of fries and then drenched in cheese sauce. This thing is HUGE, so on your first try, order the smaller version, the Ponyshoe. I'm sure not everything they make is home made, but the daily specials probably are. When I had a meatloaf platter, it certainly was. On the latest visit, I had a breaded tenderloin sandwich that was well above average. It had one fourth inch thick meat, instead of just being a huge bread Frisbee. The chile was mid-range, typical midwestern style, but OK. They had a very nice beef, vegetable soup that one in our party had that was reported to be very good. Bottom line, it is a decent small town Midwestern restaurant. Certainly above average, with good service and a complete menu. From I-74, take Exit 159 and follow IL-54 into Farmer City. The restaurant is close, located at the junction of IL-54 and US-150.
