I recently moved to the area from Chicago and wanted to rent a boat. I saw some negative reviews, but I decided to give Jet Fun a chance because most people don't leave positive reviews. It's usually a disgruntled customer for one reason or another, so I gave them a chance, and I'm so happy that I did. Nancy and Kevin were wonderful. They had a full staff, and everyone was very helpful. As a first-time pontoon boat renter, I was very nervous, but the process was made easy. There was an informational video, as well as formal instructions from the staff, which helped me quickly learn how to operate the boat safely and confidently. With the guidance provided by both the video and the staff, I felt comfortable giving it a try, and it turned out to be a great experience. The word luxury premium pontoon boat What you get : no working radio mold and nasty carpet non working gauges They will pretend you are getting a working radio etc until you get there and it's too late and you have a nice silent 10 person boat ride for the day Gas You will be charged for gas ... gas is available on the lake you can fill it yourself They will refuse you to not fill any gas that isn't them filling it and with not one single boat or ski in their inventory with a working gas gauge most people don't realize that these boats don't hold more than 10-15 gallons of gas but will tell you it holds a million dollars of gas and will charged you as much as they can without you thinking it's impossible Customer service the owner - Kevin is insane They will tell you you broke things you didn't or make up that your prop was damaged it's always something As much as this place could have been fun and nice it's always some big scam or hassle I've prolly rented 15-20 times in 12 years here and not one time has it been what it was suppose to be. These people had guts to show me propeller that they claimed came from my rental boat after I returned that looked like beaten up with a hammer. These are con artists that will BS you into believing their stories of shallow fox lake and then will try to con you and rip you off. I took the boat into safe and bouymarked waterways travelled by all boats on the lake and these people claimed that propeller that looked like beaten up by the hammer was result from boating on fox lake. My family and I have been using Jet Funn in Fox Lake Illinois for about 20 years . The Staff are great, very Helpful young people. We rent a Pontoon and bring several family and friends along. The Pontoon is always clean with all safety equipment on board as required by Coast Guard. Our pontoon had a 90 HP motor and new Prop. I followed all safety rules while operating the Pontoon and returning without any damage. The rental cost is a bit high but it seemed to be in good operating condition, well taken care of. The set-up is that you will need to pay for damages along a sliding scale and YOUR propeller is brand new, or at least newly painted...it is a scam and you will be lulled by the appearance of care. Actually important boating information was left out they told us it was a learning experience. $86 to "repair" the scraped propeller nothing was broken. anchor didn't hold so we could stop anywhere. Every year my work rents a boat and 10 to 15 of us with clients go out on the chain of lakes for 7 hours and have a great time. The ladies behind the counter were kind and informative. We went over our time because the boat wasn't ready. They claimed we used 7 gallons of gas for the 1.5 hours we had it for. The gas prices are outraged and there is nothing you can do about it. Do not ignore the reviews on here. There are plenty of other boat/jet-ski rental establishments which deserve your business. I didn't look at the reviews prior to tagging along for a family trip. After the experience we had and reading the reviews on here--I'm shocked this place is still in business. While the "prop damage" scam did not happen to us, we feel like we got scammed anyway, considering what we got for what we paid: Everything was old, from the boat to the maps to the lifejackets. The water was a dirty, murky green--garbage popping up everywhere--so nobody really swam. Just gross. It was also very shallow. Also, no first aid kit? The view was nothing special. We booked the boat for four hours but everyone was bored after the first. The two staff members we dealt with were very kind, but that said, I completely believe those reviewers on here who had negative experiences--because we saw the way others were being treated. Worst place to rent boats and jet skis. Make sure you agree on ALL the terms with the owner beforehand. Came here today and rented 2 boats and 2 tubes along with them. While we were on the water one of the tubes' handles (there were 4) got ripped off and our friend hit his head because of it. He said he was okay so we didn't go back. When our time was over, we came back to the shore so they could review if there was any damage. They found the boat prop was damaged, though we NEVER hit it. I believe it could've happened when we were in shallow water but still, people who rent their boats are not aware of how deep or shallow the lake is. Also, they already have a warning on their reception desk that due to water condition the "damage is likely to occur". They charged us $200 for the prop and wanted to charge additional $50 for the handle. If you read the rest of bad reviews, you'll see the SAME issue has happened to those people. Doesn't look like a coincidence to me. I'm extremely upset with the attitude we faced here, the owner was completely ignorant. Please consider other places to rent boats. read more

Fun begins after you return a boat - it is a standard story. 1) They want you to talk to their manager about "prop damage". 2) You talk to the manager and he shows you 3 types of damage, and of course yours is not repairable. Charge for prop is $145, and since you're not a mechanic, they will charge you for a hub (of course you don't know what it is, so you don't have a lot of choices), because it's "most likely to be damaged", as their manager states to 7 people out of 10. Conclusion: They let you rent a boat, but they don't warn you how shallow water is, btw at the front desk they have a sticker that says "with current water condition prop damage is likely to occur!!!", and looks like it's been there for years! Glad I read the reviews before we went out we took a lot of pictures but never needed them. The girl working the desk was very thorough and made sure she went over everything - really personable. The lake where you rent the boats from is crazy shallow 6ft maybe.. so use common sense. The boat we got wasn't very nice the engine kept back firing and it was really dinged up, but it was a rental so kind of expected. We had a BLAST! As far as the pricing goes I didn't pay so I can't comment on if you are getting what you pay for. Last year my husband reserved a boat for our anniversary. After waiting an hour (past our reserved time) we finally got out on the water. Unfortunately, 30min in we had to turn back because of a storm. We were given a credit for $250. I reserved a boat this year using said credit and JetFunn lost the reservation. We had no boat. After many phone calls and text with the manager I was promised a refund for $250. Here's what Kevin texted me: "Sorry for the delay but your refund was processed and I'll call you later to make sure it went through. Run far far away. The pictures of the boats do NOT match what they're giving you. Cracked pieces, missing covers for the metal ladders resulting in scrapes and scratches. Not to mention the gas gage didn't work, tachometer didn't work, and they charged us $145.00 for a dent in the propeller that we absolutely did not cause. Kevin the owner is running a huge SCAM ** Don't fall for the boat propeller scam.** They paint the propellers black so no matter what they look like they have been damaged but all that really happened was the paint was rubbed off. Rented a 16 person pontoon. Got about 10 mins out the lake the motor cut off on us and made a loud alarm noise. At that point I notice the gas gauge was pointed on E. Called the front desk and explained to the lady our issue she said that the boat was not out of gas and that we would be okay. After turning on and off the boat we would move about every 30 mins the motor would stop and continue to make the same loud noise as the wheel would start to shake. Called the front desk many times their concerned was about the 2nd party waiting for the boat so that they would not lose out on money not the safety of 16 humans. It took Kevin over an hour to find us on the lake. He made a stop to help our other party that had the same issues with a fish boat, and then came to find us. After returning to the dock from this awful experience, we were shocked to discover that we would be charged for the following....."$300" 3-hour boat ride ended up costing us a total of $1000! Plus the cops where called. The customer service is horrible they were rude and had a real slick mouth and kept rolling their eyes at you every moment they could switching their story to the police. At one point I had it with them and exchanged the same energy back. Kevin followed us with a clip board of false charges. They wanted to charge us for two -4 hour pontoon boat, wave runner, damage to the boat and the propellers because they had seaweed on them. We had one Pontoon but they thought we should pay for the lost of the other party. We didn't get a chance to use the wave runner and we never damaged a boat that was already damaged from the moment we took off with it and as for the seaweed that was out of our control. I have 16 witnesses. Reached out to a couple of the most recent one star review people to follow through with a lawsuit and contacted the BBB. DO NOT GO HERE. . IF THERE ARE ANY GOOD REVIEWS IT'S BECAUSE THEY OFFER YOU A DISCOUNT TO PUT A GOOD ONE UP FOR THEM! This place needs to be shut down immediately. Their prop scam is a total sham-scam. It's how they make extra money and lots of it. I know people who've been taken by their scam. I advise everyone to stay away from Jet Funn. There are reputable and honest rental places on the Chain - pick one of them. I've been boating on the chain off-on for 30 years (with last 10 years over 800 engine hrs clocked on the chain) and have my own boats, but I feel it's incumbent upon me as a seasoned chain boater to tell people that: a) aluminum props are CHEAP and nearly always fixable unless there's something structural (even then they can fix them) b) The chain is shallow in spots but damaging a prop to where it needs repair by raking the bottom is unlikely unless you strike rock or similar hard object (as the bottom is mostly muck). You can scuff up a prop, esp. aluminum, hence the black spray paint scam ("damage" isn't damage - it's part of the their swindle) c) outboards strike bottom A LOT LESS than I/Os, especially pontoons as they have no real draft In all my time out there I've only damaged a prop one, maybe two times. It's more common on larger boats but it's not the norm as they'd have you believe. And if the water is very low, DON'T GO OUT unless you know the chain very well. Don't be one of the "this won't happen to me" people - it very well could if you rent from Jet Funn. Last word - if you don't know the chain well and/or are unfamiliar with boating, take the time to learn safety rules and boater's courtesy before going out there. read more

These guys were awesome and easy going, honestly was kind of skeptical about visiting Jet Funn my first time due to some of the reviews I read. The fact of the matter is, people are going to put a bad review 20 times before they put one good one, it's just how things work. Three reasons I give this organization 5 stars... 1- Not sure what her name was, but she was very thorough when reading the terms of service. She even had pre-written the main points in simpler terms on a separate sheet of paper. 2- The trainers was also thorough about teaching us how to jet ski, considering that this was my girlfriend and I's first time. 3- These guys set after operating hours to answer questions regarding future reservations. This conversation ended with a special offer and a Popsicle. seriously! As of today (9/25/16), I am renting 5 wave runners as a birthday gift to myself. I will be back to do another update. UPDATE (9/25/2016) I went for my birthday and rented 5 jet ski's. This time makes my first time falling from the jet ski. They had a crew member come check on me quicker than I could swim back to my jet ski. Don't let this discourage you!! It was my birthday as well as my 2nd time Jet skiing so I thought I was ready for the aggressive one. We all checked back in with no complaints or problems. I will be going again today. (10/11/2016) UPDATE (9/25/2017) I've got to admit, this is the place to be! The last day I went on 10-11 of last year was a blast. Just one friend and I were out on the lake. A very frustrating experience. We thought this would be a great activity during this awful coronavirus. The sign to enter the building says "masks required". Our family regularly wears masks to protect ourselves and others. Only ONE girl behind the desk had a mask on!!!! The other two had nothing covering their faces and were close to customers. The guys who help you get out on the water and then dock the boat, and give driving instructions were within a foot of us and HAD NO MASKS ON! Our family is being careful and we expected that Jet Funn would be careful also. We spent a lot of money and for all we know our group of 7, including 2 children under 3 years of age were exposed to the virus. My family and my neighbors together rented a pontoon for the second time from Jet Funn yesterday. Like the first time, all went well. The lady behind the counter was friendly and helpful, and the dock hands were on the ball and also very polite and helpful. The pontoon we got was clean, but unfortunately didn't have a working radio, and a pin was missing on the awning so that we couldn't take it down to go under bridges, which was a bummer. Steering was a bit sticky. Aside from that, all went well. We had no issue with the whole prop damage thing. I know a lot of reviews talk about that, but it's never been a problem for us basically because we've never damaged a prop. Just pay attention and raise the prop when you're in shallow water. Not an issue. Where's the shallow water likely to be? In the channels, obviously. Stay in the middle. Near docks, again obviously. Also sand bars. Where are the sand bars? Ask, if you don't know. Jet Funn will happily inform you where the shallow areas tend to be, but honestly, if you didn't do your research on boating the Chain O'Lakes before you rent, you're not that responsible to begin with. You're the captain, so act like one. Keep an eye out for debris floating on the surface and avoid it. They do paint the prop black (not sure why, I suppose to show damage more clearly when it does happen) but invariably some paint always wears off due to normal operation during the course of the 4 or 8 hours you have it. They do NOT count that as prop damage. They never have for me, at least. I asked about that very thing the first time I rented from them. read more

i'd give jet funn more stars if i could!! the girls and i had monday off of work so it just seemed right to make it a boat day. when calling around, nothing really seemed like the right fit until i called jet funn and chris answered the phone. she was so friendly and informational. she told me all of the boat prices before i even got the chance to ask, and offered to send me pictures to make sure it was the right fit! when we got there, we were greeted but the shop manager kevin. he was absolutely wonderful. made sure we had the best boat and was even willing to go out of his way to help us load the boat!! they showed us exactly where not to go, and even provided us with a map with everything marked. when we went down to load the boat, one of the dock boys, i think his name was Q, made sure to pull the boat close to the pier so we wouldn't fall in. They also have the perfect picture opportunity! they have a giant chair by the water with a palm tree! truly gets you in the mood to be on a boat! While out, the boat ran great! i went in with some boating experience, but it was extremely easy to operate! they were very thorough when going over how to drive and pull the propeller up in the no wake and shallow spots labeled on the map. When we came back, kevin made sure to greet us with some cheesey jokes! told me the prop was perfect and he was looking forward to seeing us again! all in all, it was such a perfect experience! i would highly recommend not only for the boat, but for the stellar customer service as well Thanks Jet Funn! read more

The other week I decided to take the family boating for a few hours and I'm somewhat familiar with the Fox Lake area, so I renting a boat from a local place was best. If your from Chicago, be prepared for a long drive out and back anticipate anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half each way. Jet Funn is a nice little place with an assortment of watercraft to choose from. In addition to rental, I believe they store personal boats as well. If you are planning to rent there, you'll need to fill out the release forms, a driver's license and a map, the map they rent for a fee of course. Also pay close attention to the lecture on boat and specifically, propeller damage - it's VIP (read more farther down)! We rented a basic power boat, which worked well for 5 adults plus 2 kids. Out on the lake we had a lot of fun going around, looking at houses that dotted the shores and swimming in a semi-murky lake. It was a fun afternoon of boating So, when you do decide to rent, there are some really important things to be aware of. When you rent the boat, they say you are responsible for "any" damaged caused to the boat including propeller damage and when you first get to your boat, they have you inspect it and show you the propeller is not dinged up. If you bring the boat back with a damaged propeller they will charge you from $25 to $160 to repair or replace it. While the lake is somewhat clean, there are debris in it, including large tree limbs and such, which if you're paying attention can be easily avoided. It's the "unseen" debris that are the your real problem. In addition the debris the lake is very shallow near the shore, so it's best to stay far away from them. While on the lake, l vigilantly made sure to avoid sandbars, debris and doing anything risky with the boat. However upon our return and there were problems. Upon THEIR inspection of the propeller they said it looked slightly bent, well to me it looked the same as when it had got it. The boss/owner guy took a look at it and said it will cost $50 to fix. Now, here's where I become a somewhat skeptic. I find it interesting that when you are renting the boat they prep you for the potential costs of fixing (specifically the propeller), obviously they surprised me a bit with the possible $160 fee. When you first inspect the boat they point out that the propeller's not chipped, but never say anything about it being bent, which I didn't look for. When they do say the propeller is damaged, the price to fix it seemed completely arbitrary, although it's funny that you're quite happy to only be charged $50 instead of $160. If the propeller bends so easily as they claim, some taps from a rubber mallet should fix it, so what exactly costs $50? This could all be normal, or it could be a clever little way to make extra money. I didn't hit any debris and never went near a sandbar so how did the propeller get slightly bent? Or was it bent slightly and I didn't notice it, since I was looking for chips? I'd recommend taking a photo of the propeller before going out. I also found it interesting that someone else I know had a very similar experience, (ie charged for "propeller damage") leading me to believe that this happens a lot. This ... of course is my opinion... although, I did notice the owner / boss drives a fairly fancy Ferrari. I have to wonder how it''s funded. Pros: Boating is fun for the whole family. Cons: the drive out is long / possible "extra fees" drives up the cost Cost: $$$$ of 5 (was a $$ - but with the fees now $$$$) Overall Rating: 2.75 of 5 (was a 4 until the "extra" fees) Recommendation: Can be worthwhile, but be conscious of what to look for. read more

Two stars only because I think they run a somewhat shady business. And I have one word that encapsulates this: propeller. I listened extremely intently to the lady as she described to us what constituted a small repair job to the propeller and what required a complete replacement, costing $160. I also listened very carefully to areas we should avoid, in other words, shallow parts of the lake with lots of muck and debris. So, we were pretty careful...so I thought. Granted, the fact that we did have to replace the propeller was totally our fault. Well, the fault of two boys on our six-person excursion. They turned the motor on in extremely shallow water so obviously we were bound to totally F-up the propeller. And we did. So much so we had to pay $160 to replace it. My beef with this place is I think they make most of their money by people either needing to completely replace the propeller or pay for "damages". I think it's kind of crooked. I mean, yes, we did mess up our prop and so I'm fine to pay for it...but I also think that it's a little more common that they give away, thus sending groups of irresponsible young adults out onto the lake without really understanding the likelihood of replacing the prop, and thus, the financial repercussions. So, all in all, the trip cost over $500. Kinda pricey for 4 hours. But, it was fun to say the least. The lake was a nice temperature although kind of choppy. They had lots of fun watercraft to offer their customers as well, including equipment for tubing. So, I'm not actually sure I'd recommend this place. If you're down to spend a lot of money and gamble the fact that you'll probably screw your propeller, then this could be a nice alternative to other more crowded areas. PS...I overheard another employee describing the financial penalties regarding wave runners. Apparently, if you tip over your waverunner, it's a $500 fee. $500!!!!!!! Seriously?!??!?!?!? read more

I had rented a deck boat for my birthday with a few friends. I did all the research before hand, researched rates, called the place to find out all the costs associated with the rental, and even asked if there was any other information I needed to know, since I was a first time renter. They informed me of the rates, of the cancellation policy, of the additional tow rope cost, tubing cost, and even about the map charge. What they failed to mention was that there was a cost associated with damage to the propeller! I found out about this MAJOR detial when we were at the rental place, after my 8 friends and I drove 1.5 hours. At this point, even if I wanted to cancel the reservation and go elsewhere (this sounded shady from the start), I couldn't because of their 72 hour cancelation policy. The staff was very useless, and gave 8 people who never drove a boat before a 5-10 minute lesson. Being paramoid that I signed my life away for the propeller, I asked on more than 1 occasion "how do we know if we are damaging the propeller". The response I got back was literally "no matter where you go, the lake is goign to be shallow, if you see the boat kicking up mud, pick up the propeller" .... THANKS BUDDY! Being worried about ruining something, doesn't make for a fun experience. We kept the trim/prop/propeller (whichever is the correct term) up the majority of the time, and were constantly looking for mud in our wake, but very rarely saw any! When we returned the boat, the guy shuffled us inside and came back 10 minutes later to tell us that we had "unrepairable damage to the propeller and it was going to be an additional $135.00!!!!! They never took the time to show us the prop before, and we didn't see them take it off the boat, so we had no proof that the damage was actually caused by our use. We do take some responsibility for this, but a non-shady business would make sure they show you this.... Afterall, was I supposed to jump in with a snorkel mask to see the propeller with my own eyes??? Other than the fact that they don't disclose any pricing about the propeller on-line, and won't accept cancellations because someone may not want to incur an additional cost up $160, this place is SHADY for many other reasons. 1. They charge for gas, bprovided us with a boat that didn't have a functioning fuel gague. Good thing we didn't run out of gas! 2. We told them 1 hr into our trip that both the gas and speedometer were not working and their response was "you won't be able to go fast enough to need the speedometer, and the boat can run for about 8 hours on a tank of gas". Thanks, but when I'm spending over $700, I expect the boat to properly work! 3. They required a CC to hold the reservation, and I gave them my AmEx on the phone, and in person... they even made a copy of it. So when it was time to pay, they told me they didn't accept AmEx (I was confused, since they had to run a hold on the card, didn't they???) So I gave them my back up Mastercard, and they tried telling me it would be an additional 3% to use a Credit Card! Seriously!!!!! I have resaerched many other baot rental places to see if this is the norm... Gess what!!!! None of the rental places I have spoken to include the fee for propeller damage.
