Yelp removed reviews of Jesse Ruben. Yelp is not following it's own published policies. My first review, my update and another review by someone else were removed. The worst attorneys are the ones that threaten/influence Yelp so they can perpetuate their fraud on unsuspecting consumers. Shameful!
The update from my initial review:
Since my previous review, I have received comments privately from people telling me how horrible their experience with Jesse Ruben also was. They fear this bully will come after them personally. How pathetic that a so-called professional is such an awful and scary person.
Ruben has taken public defender jobs, considered the bottom of the rung for the attorneys that cant get clients legitimately because they are so awful. No one else would hire him. I spoke with three attorneys who admitted that Ruben has a reputation for being "favored", and "liked" by Judge _ , the most corrupt, inept of judges. He abuses and exploits his clients in every possible manner and has no compunction destroying the lives of the most vulnerable people for his own sick gratification. Even as an outsourced public defender, his clients have fired him; he is that horrible! Client Christian Speaker was railroaded so badly by Ruben that he went to the media to make his desire to fire Ruben known. (Google Marsden motion, Speaker, Ruben.)
Other Yelpers that spoke up in private described how this man extorted money from clients then tried to drop them and keep the money and finds another target. This was also my experience. He made his money by stealing the retainer, never doing any work, never producing accounting, outright lying, colluding with the opposing counsel to prohibit his own client access to funds. He later used extreme psychological and verbal abuse threats and extortion attempts to force the funds he withheld illegally to be signed over to him. This is a tactic of the worst attorneys.
After the pile of horror stories and my own experience, I'd like to see this attorney sanctioned and out of business. He should have formal complaints filed against him with his firm, to the State Bar, the District Attorney, the Court and on every legal Web review site. If more former clients stood up to this nasty, abusive, crooked behavior and filed complaints or even a class action suit, a remedy may be available and he could be stopped from damaging others.
It's worth noting that the firm Ruben is with is equally bad. Dudley, one of the partners, has been sanctioned and put on probation for his misdeeds. See CA State Bar for proof. In addition, the firm represented a judge, who along with a Los Gatos police officer, was guilty of fraud, ticket fixing, and bribery. (The charges were reduced.) The CA State Bar and San Mercury published evidence. Any firm that is willing to protect corrupt officials in a racketeering enterprise should be viewed with great suspicion.

My family's experience with this lawyer a few years back: Arrogant, predatory, opportunistic, deceitful, inappropriate, sadistic, not so sharp.
This guy refused to be held accountable and he runs fast and loose; he didn't care about reviewing the case or listening to the facts. He has a high opinion of himself for no apparent reason. He doesn't seem to care about representing clients to get a good outcome. He contradicted himself several times in the course of our interview then tried to blame us for "not understanding" him. He repeated how experienced he was, but could not provide a single answer to even one legal question. He didn't have a sample client contract and said he doesn't use them. (Red flag. Bad attorneys never want to be held accountable.) All this guy seemed to care about was his reputation with the judge and other key players in the system, not a good outcome for clients. Ruben used his own client as a pawn for personal gain.
He claims to represent minors, the most vulnerable population, yet he is the least considerate, attentive, attorney. His inappropriate (sadisticly happy) response to our painful situation was another red flag. He was intent on causing more trouble and running up bills. I would have a difficult time trusting him alone in a room and letting him speak to the court on behalf of anyone. I saw signs of a bully who is unsafe.
