They also have a large and nice assortment of potted plants and hangers for your porch.

There are more produce stands than prepared food vendors, which I think is the key difference between the RVA big market and this one. It's a great place to go as a family--there are still plenty of vendors, just not as many as at some of the larger markets. Parking is also easy since it's in a neighborhood, so street parking is usually free. Every stands vendor is also so kind and are always happy your supporting there small local produce! My go-to's - cherry tomatoes - peppers - zucchini - there's this stand that sells meat, they have very good eggs I always get.

The booths can change throughout the weeks, but some of my top visited ones are Oro Pasta, Agriberry Farm, and Amy's Garden. Live music is played by Bobby Joe Small. He is so friendly and kind! He'll bring a bunch of small instruments and leave them on the ground around him for children to play along. There is a good mix of food options here. I usually am able to do a majority of my grocery shopping for the week at this market. I really love Birdhouse Farmers Market and can't rave enough about it.

Not only are they open during the week, they're open afternoon instead of morning. I know right?! How unusual! I found this smallish market because I was taking the back streets, avoiding some gnarly traffic. It's tucked away behind Byrd house, hidden from everything. In its little grassy lawn, right off the Byrd House garden it's a lot like a little oasis. Parking isn't easy, since it's Oregon Hill near VCU. They say that there's a parking lot open but perhaps I'm blind, I've never noticed it. Nice veggies, friendly people, some artists and performers make for a nice atmosphere. Every week they raffle off a box of CSA veggies for the next week. I've never entered but you gotta admit, it's better odds than the lottery! Great place and great if you couldn't bring yourself to get up early enough for the market on the weekend!

Admission is definitely on the expensive side--especially if you go on a Thursday like we did--since about 85% of the activities older kids want to enjoy weren't operating. The food stations were closed. (We scored a great rate on Groupon for tickets) We did get to enjoy the beautiful pumpkin patch and sunflower field, but my oldest was disappointed that the bounce house and corn cannon weren't available. Don't be fooled by your GPS, you will drive an additional 3-5 minutes to get to the strawberry picking portion. We timed it so we would arrive right when it opened. It was easy to find a place to park. They give you cute red buckets to put your strawberries in (you get to keep the bucket). We spent about 30 minutes picking strawberries. The berries they have here are HUGE! There were also a lot to choose from when we went. You are charged by how heavy your basket is. I'd highly recommend checking this farm out. It's a great place to bring little ones too.

I love that it's still in that somewhat awkward beginning stage of "how does this work?" (or maybe, that's just me...). I love that the vendors are quick to point you to another vendor if they're out of something or aren't carrying something that day. Easy to find, super cheap prices. The big drawback is that you can't get eggs or any meat products... yet. Excited to see how this market grows in the future!

PG Farmers' Market has been one of my Saturday destinations for years. Although it is a small…read morefarmers' market it has a lot to offer and at prices that are way lower than any other in the area. They have a wide range of local produce, eggs, honey, coffee (roasted locally, not grown), and lots of assorted craft items. I typically go for the eggs and produce. On this occasion, I bought some coffee from a vendor which was amazing and only $7 as compared to some local coffed I bought in RVA for $12. I also bought some veggies, eggs from one of the few vendors that sell them, and hoop cheese. This is a great little farmer's market. The only down side is that there are some weekends that vendors are scant. My favorite thing to get is eggs and there are times when there are no vendors with eggs. Even still, I never leave empty handed and never spend more than $20.
