The remnants of a better park still remain; the trails, now overgrown, the buildings, whether they were once for education or recreation or simply using the bathroom, are now all locked, even one of the most basic human needs, water, was once offered here, but now if you don't want you or your child to dehydrate after walking or playing or exercising, you either had to pre-plan with bottled water or now need to leave and go purchase some elsewhere. Park maintenance and the budgets allotted to the parks and recreation department I understand; the trails probably not a priority, when things like the Riverwalk have been built recently, and I can't imagine staffing for Luther Britt Park is in the list of priorities for the local government. But access to water? Restroom facilities that are already here and functional and are just locked? If it's an issue of safety or worry that the restrooms will be misused, thousands of parks around the world, hundreds in our own state manage to find a solution to these hypothetical worries; denying 99% of visitors amenities all over the possibility that someone, someday may or may not do something untoward. The taxpayers of this community are primarily the ones this park was built for and who benefit the most from what it provides. Those same individuals, those who not only financed the initial development of these facilities, but whose hard-earned wages support the continued existence and usage of it, should not have their basic needs denied. Solutions as simple as turning on already-existing water fountains and unlocking already-standing restrooms make all the difference when guests are here exercising or playing with their dog or creating memories with their children. Please, turn the water fountains on.

We went to Fourth Rock Stables for a trail ride while visiting the area for the weekend. They are a…read morebarn run by an older couple with a small team of helpers. They have around 20 horses at the barn. The road to the parking area is unkept and has lots of bumps so low-clearance cars might struggle to get there. They are reasonably priced, $40 per person for about an hour long ride. We booked by calling ahead a few days before we wanted to ride. I would say this barn is good for adult riders, but would NOT recommend it for groups with children or individuals who are nervous around horses as the male owner can be a bit stern and very direct. They also don't provide helmets for riders to wear nor did I see any that were available upon request. The horses are well-behaved for the most part, the helpers are all nice, friendly, and talkative. The trail is flat and through a wooded area, but has a clear path that the leader takes you on. Quick Tips: Bring sunscreen and sunglasses, wear closed-toed shoes and long pants (even in the summer), bring cash (they don't take card as far as I know), be on time or early, bring water, and screenshot or download directions/map because cell service can be limited.

The photo shoot was with a kangaroo and a fennec fox, and somehow they managed to be even cuter in person. The kangaroo was barely a month old, tiny, calm, and ridiculously adorable. The fennec fox was just as cute, all ears and personality, and the staff made sure the experience felt safe and respectful for the animals the entire time. After the photo session, we took a full tour of the facility and saw a wide variety of animals. We were able to feed most of them, which made the experience feel interactive without feeling rushed or forced. The staff clearly knows the animals well and takes the time to explain things, answer questions, and make sure everyone is comfortable. We didn't get to directly interact with the foxes during the tour due to regulations that prohibit visitor interaction with them, which was explained clearly and made complete sense. Even without that, the experience was still fantastic. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about what they do, and you can tell the animals are well cared for. Everything felt organized, ethical, and thoughtfully run. Overall, we loved it. Great experience, great people, and now the only real problem is figuring out where I can get a fennec fox of my own.

Instead, we were met with hostility, disrespect, and a disturbing reminder that racism is alive and well in some corners of this country. From the moment we arrived, we were not given any forms to complete--just told to hand over $20 in cash per adult. No rules. No guidelines. Just money exchanged and a dismissive welcome. Within 30 minutes, one of the owners--who, along with his partner, carried a heavy "good ol' boy" energy--approached our group multiple times, each time delivering information he should've shared at the very beginning. When I calmly asked why we weren't told this upfront and if there was anything else we needed to know before he interrupted us again, he completely lost his composure. His response? In front of my 9yr old nephew and 12yr old son, he screamed, "If you mess up again, get the F@#k out!" My 12-year-old turned to me and asked, "Dad, is this what racism feels like?" With pain in my heart and fire in my chest, I had to tell him, "Yes, son. Unfortunately, it is." We left shaken but not silenced. If there's one thing Harrison Creek Gun Club did well, it was give our sons a real-life lesson in how to recognize racism--and rise above it. To any families considering a visit: be warned. This place may call itself a gun club, but what it truly fires off is ignorance and intolerance.

The teachers are that good. My oldest son has been training here for two months and he is taking his Yellow Belt test on Saturday. A month after I signed him up, I signed my daughter up as well.
