Very high quality martial arts studio, I've been going here for the past 4 years. This place teaches perfection of the basics rather than in-depth sophisticated techniques that can never be applied to any fighting situation. Jerry Dula masterfully teaches traditional kata and techniques which he explains that one wouldn't use in real situations; and also teaches basic self-defense, and how to be able to defend yourself in many different situations. After having visited many other martial arts studios, I believe this deserves all five stars that it is being awarded read more

"In 1975, students of Mr. Dula received "most likely to succeed" award. His school has been in business longer than any karate school in the history of Asheville, teaching by far more students than anyone. Mr. Dula has a degree in Physical Therapy and has worked at the V.A. Medical Center for 32 years, serving the Veterans. He also served 4 years in The U.S. Air Force. Mr. Dula teaches from life`s experiences. He is the highest ranking Black Belt in Asheville, studying Karate for 46 years. Mr. Dula has a certified Black Belt in 4 different styles: Shotokan (Japan) Shito Ryu (Okinawa) Tae Kwon Do (Korea) and Go Shin Budo (China and Okinawa). Mr. Dula`s school performed a karate demonstration at the Toughman Contest for 21 yrs. in a row. He had a couple of students that won the contest year after year, he teaches you how to fight for real. We ate lunch at the nearby Twisted Laurel, which was excellent. Things to know: Parking is not free. There are a couple of metered spaces nearby and there's a pay to park lot across the street. There are no bathrooms or changing rooms close by (that I could see). On their website it says there is a public bathroom, but I couldn't find it. There isn't a lot of shade except under the trees and on the amphitheater stage. These are really too far away to keep a good eye on a small child. Bring your sunscreen! There are no benches nearby to sit on, but there are concrete blocks so bring a towel for parents to sit on. It's a public fountain, so we were glad to have our water shoes. The fountain is advertised to have a lot of features and lights, but we didn't see any of that while we were there. The water shoots up out of the ground and doesn't change. That's enough for my preK kid, but might get boring for older ones. We brought some water toys and those were a big hit. While we were there a summer camp or daycare came through with 50 kids who were well-behaved, but they took over the amphitheater area and most of the fountain. We ended up leaving because it was just too crowded.
