After I called the surf shop to advise them that there was no instructor at the meeting location, I was told who we were supposed to have as an instructor apparently "had a mixup in his schedule" is what the young lady said when calling. This isn't the first time this has happened. When we did this last year same situation of a schedule mixup. The young gentleman at the shop where you pick up your wetsuits are very pleasant and helpful. I was later called by one of the managers to let me know that they were refunding for the full cost of the lesson and that we would still get our lesson. They said they were refunding to apologize for the inconvenience of waiting over 30 minutes past our lesson time for an instructor to arrive.

I showed up at the shop to check in, was easily assisted with the wetsuit fitting, and the girls working the front desk were great helping me find the Tshirt size I wanted. Instructions for where to show up and when for the lesson were super clear. They even took me early, and I had a clear demo of on-land surfing "stance" and paddling. My instructor (Griffin) was so nice and helpful with pushing me out into the waves and explaining literally every aspect of surfing. I had a great time and would highly recommend it!

A note on that: - A Maine State Parks Pass is $55 for an Individual Season Pass, $105 for a Vehicle Season Pass. It gets you into dozens and dozens and dozens of parks across Maine, and most of those parks only really check passes from maybe the beginning of May to the end of September. - For Scarborough Beach State Park, which is operated in a public/private partnership with Black Point Resource Management LLC, from April 1st to October 1st it costs $7 per person per visit for residents/$9 for non-residents; from October 1st to November 15th it costs $6 per person per visit for residents/$8 for non-residents; it's $105 for an Individual Season Pass, $140 for a Vehicle Season Pass, $155 for a 24-hour Season Pass. So... it's *not* one of the cheaper options for beach access in the state. Is it glorious in the summer? I don't know. But according to the folks who own this beach: "Scarborough Beach offers some of the best swimming in New England with water temperatures in the high 60's throughout July and August." Is it glorious in the off season? Yes, but... The "yes": it's a long, sandy beach with uninterrupted views of the ocean. It makes for exceptional strolling and thinking and taking in blue space! Know that you have to park on the street, and it's a little bit of a walk to the beach itself, but it's so worth it. The "but": this is one of the most dog-walked beaches I've ever been to (and I rarely see them leashed). Every time I visit there is *a lot* of dog waste bags; one time I found 16 bags of dog poop and 2 used diapers. Yikes.

Ben's instruction is second to none; he brings a high-level professionalism and calm demeanor that makes every flight session more focused and fun. The best part? Reporting live from 2025!!…read more I love this little beach. It's right down the road from my fave seafood shack and for years on my jaunts to NH I've passed it right on by. Welp not this year. I got my fried scallop plate and caught a brilliant sunset from a bench right at the sand's edge. I went around 730pm in early June so there were only like 4 cars and no parking fees. Your mileage is sure to vary now that summer is officially underway. The water looked beautiful and inviting but as you know Ms. Mands does not like walking on sand without a really good reason. And considering it was cool enough to wear a wool hat, there were no good reasons. There's a huge bathhouse in the lot as well as a relatively short distance from sand to water. I bet this place is a real hit during the peak of summer. I legit only came to sit, eat, listen to the waves, and watch the sunset - beyond that can't say much. But my 45 minutes or so here were 5-star all the way!
