We had the best time out on the water looking for dolphins around beautiful Jekyll Island. There's just something magical about seeing these amazing creatures swimming and playing in their natural habitat! The boat ride was relaxing, the views were beautiful, and getting to see the dolphins up close made the whole experience even better. We laughed, enjoyed the sunshine, and had such a great time making memories together! If you're visiting Jekyll Island, I definitely recommend adding a dolphin tour to your list. It's the perfect mix of adventure, beautiful scenery, and a whole lot of fun! 10/10 experience--we'd absolutely do it again!

The tour had about 30 of us hopefuls and wow -it did not disappoint! Everyone knows there's no guarantee on a tour like this, but you always hope for the best. Our crew of two gave us some nice historical information about the island and great geographical info about the tides and how the island shore is changing. Then we started to spot the dolphins. Two over here, three that way, a pod in front-so exciting! We were able to see dozens of these beautiful creatures and some very close to the boat. Even with the cold, this tour is well worth the cost and I def recommend!

And I wasn't wrong! The tour lasted about 90 minutes (and it leaves promptly FYI) and takes you along the shoreline of Amelia Island - past the shrimping boats and past a Civil War era fort - before heading towards Cumberland Island National Seashore. This is where the true fun of the tour was for me. I had no idea really the history of the island and found it fascinating how the Carnegies and Rockefellers and more of the country's elite used this random Georgia seashore as their private escape. The history of both Cumberland and Amelia Islands is incredibly fascinating and the guides for both the Florida and Georgia sides respectively were well informed and personable. Plus - you'll very likely see a ton of great wildlife throughout including dolphins and wild horses and pigs. It's a great way to spend an afternoon in the area and a fabulous introduction to Cumberland Island National Seashore/Park.

When I say "oodles of didactics all over the walls" it's actually overwhelming! There were really informative learning panels on every square inch of vertical space in this building, but it is so much at once, and hard to get close to because the tanks, cages, and other exhibits sit along the walls, and keep you a distance from the often-tiny text. They definitely need a larger space. Dawn was our guide for the visit, and she was very sweet and informative. She got a baby gator out for us to touch, and pointed out some interesting facts about the MANY tortoises they house. She also introduced us to the loggerhead sea turtles, and took us to the side building with another tank there. These turtles are stragglers from the nests during hatching season. The sea turtle wildlife crew will check all nests two weeks after the main hatch, and they get stragglers to Tidelands, where they will live and grow, temporarily, until they are large enough to be released at adult size, back into the sea. Stragglers don't have good chance of survival at all in the wild, but Tidelands completely bolsters their odds, and may even give them a better chance than the ones who fall victim to predators or environmental hazards. Run by 4-H, Tidelands is a great center with a great cause, and it was super fun learning with them!
