Nestled among the old buildings in Polo's Mason street is an unassuming bar called Chesty P's,…read morenamed after legendary Marine LT GEN Lewis Burwell "Chesty" Puller. Inside is everything you'd expect from an establishment named after a Marine. There is no loud music blaring. There are no garish bright lights, or perky young wait staff making small talk as they take your order. The furnishings and décor are sparse and spartan, except for the wall of bottles and glassware reminiscent of a Wild West saloon, plus a couple of flat screens tuned in on the sports channel. Joe, who is owner, bartender, and a Marine, proudly gestured at the display of bottles behind him and growled "If it's up there, we have it!" I opted for a Guinness, and was not disappointed. For a hot July afternoon, the cold beer and the thick masonry that housed the bar (although I'm sure the AC was helping, too) was a welcome reprieve. The late afternoon crowd was also friendly and come from all walks of life: men in T-shirts and jeans, as well as office girls in pantsuits. An added attraction is the mean mai tais concocted from a "personal secret recipe" by Joe's daughter, who also tends the bar. Although I'm not a mixed drink enthusiast, I liked that it was refreshing, and very potent! The place is worth a visit, whether you're an Old Salt who wants to talk the talk with Joe, or just in for cold drinks and some company. And if you've got a small insignificant souvenir from an overseas campaign, why not give it to Joe? He might find it worthy of being added to his shrine to the Marine Corps.

Two stars is generous....I didn't see a ton of the marine stuff mentioned, nor did I see the owner…read more What I did see was a female bartender who drank a steady supply of bud light and seemed a little buzzed, and three guys who were creepy if I'm being generous and borderline Deliverance if I'm being mean. We seem to have gotten pegged as "city folk" and while not treated badly, were certainly looked at as outsiders. Maybe if you live in town it's great but if not, go to Jeff's or Dads.

So there has always been a lot of hype around this restaurant in Freeport, and I was looking…read moreforward to taking my mother out for a nice meal. Our entire party was very disappointed. The food, while edible, was not up to par with the pricing. It's as if the restaurant wants to be high end, but doesn't quite hit the mark with the food. Our appetizer, baked Brie with apples, was served on a black plate that honestly, looked filthy. The rim of the plate was greasy and smudged all over. The Brie had some limp, mixed lettuce as a garnish (that should have been a clue as to the level of attention the kitchen pays to presentation). Further, there wasn't any melted Brie in there, but there was Brie rind. The onion mushroom soup was salty, and all the onions and mushrooms were invisible, having been pulverized into the broth. The servers brought the food out like they were dropping a book on the table. One of the salads ordered, was not delivered with the rest of the food- not sure if the waitress of the kitchen screwed that up. The drinks were okay- they were the only thing not sub-standard. I'm giving this 2 stars because the building interior is historic and beautiful, the chairs were comfortable, and the cocktails were fine. It would be a nice place to have pre-dinner cocktails, but I strongly suggest you go somewhere else for your dinner.

Service is always exceptional. Menu supplemented with great specials allows for either small…read morebites or a complete meal. Im addicted to the creamy onion & mushroom soup. Thursday taco night has unique options. Delectable desserts. Definitely a favorite place to unwind.
