I've never reviewed a doctors office before but I have to give a shoutout to Dr. Mcalister. I broke my 5th metatarsal playing volleyball. At the ER they gave me recommendations of orthopedic surgeons and podiatrists but no one would pick up. I called multiple times. I decided to take this into my own hands and do my own research for a good doctors I found Dr. mcalister online and they immediately picked up and got me in. He was very gentle with my foot and recommended surgery or I could wait but there wouldn't be a 100% chance it would heal. I went in on a Wednesday and he fit me in for surgery on Friday! I was super nervous but the surgery went smoothly and the pain post op hasn't been bad at all. He's been at my follow up appointments and answers all my questions and is super patient, even with a busy schedule. I saw Dr. McAlister almost 2 years for a fairly intense surgery. I had seen 3 other podiatrist/orthopedic surgeons for 5 years prior, and none were able to give a solid answer or solution- I had ridiculously high arches, neuromas, tendonitis, capsulitis, you name it. It was a mess. I believe what he did was similar to a "Cole Procedure", but essentially he cut through my entire foot, to shift it upwards, and then screw it back in place, along with a laundry list of other things, achilles work, calf lengthening.... Before and after the surgery I was impressed with Dr. McAlister's expertise and confidence- not arrogant or cocky at all, but he didn't seem like he was "practicing" medicine, or making educated guesses. He knew what he was doing, and acted as such. In one visit we did a consultation, x-rays, reviewed the x-rays, and then discussed his surgical recommendation, as well as direct answers why other surgeries that I had done, or had recommended to be done, were not/would not be effective, or would cause further complications. Additionally, I could tell he was very busy, but when he was in the room with me, he was 100% there, fully engaged. When someone is going to be doing irreversible surgery on you, it feels very reassuring that you are the center of their attention. Two weeks later I had the surgery, went perfectly smooth, one month of non-weight bearing got me caught up on netflix, I started going to physical therapy soon after, and two months after the surgery I was (very carefully, and with poles) hiking in North Mountain Preserve, working on getting strength and balance back, working those intrinsic muscles. I ended up moving out of Arizona soon after, but will literally be flying back this year, to have the same surgery on my other foot, because I refuse to risk that large of a surgery with anyone else. I have been seeing Dr. McAlister since I fractured my ankle in 2014. He performed a very complicated repair involving three plates and multiple screws. I can't say enough about his concern and care during the healing process. He warned me that I would eventually develop arthritis in the repaired ankle and that has now happened. He has been diligent in exploring options to relieve pain and retain mobility in my ankle. I referred a friend to him when she was suffering from an old foot injury. She is now pain free. Dr. McAllister was the first doc to finally address / treat my severe foot pain that I have been struggling with for the entirety of my life. I am from California originally and was seeing a foot and ankle doctor out there during high school . Nothing seemed to help , which was a huge issue granted I was attending Arizona to play football . It wasn't until my senior year of college that I was recommended to see him. I had a total ankle replacement and a calcaneal osteotomy at the same time from Dr. McAlister and am only 48 years old but there's some background information that is extremely helpful for anyone looking for an incredibly talented, highly trained, and confident doctor. A friend of mine who is an orthopedic surgical sales representative told me about him thankfully. In fact, I had 10 different top foot and ankle orthopedic specialists and board certified DPM foot and ankle surgeons locally and throughout the country look at my situation, including my brother who is one of those top board certified DPM foot and ankle surgeons. 90% of them told me they did not know if the surgery would work for me based on the angle of my foot at the time. All of the medical journals say the chances are low so I started to lose hope. Immediately when I met Dr. McAlister, he put me at ease with his sense of humor, laid back and confident approach and told me that after the surgery, I should be good and most importantly, reach my goal of not being in constant pain which was 9 out of 10 at the time for the past 4 years. Luckily, he had experience doing total ankle replacements on 20 different patients that had my type of angled foot and more than 100 total ankle replacements of those that did not. I am now 11 weeks post-op, have no pain at all, and I'm no longer limping so he has changed my life already! I am optimistic and will post again when I am at one year recovery doing all the things physically that I love again without pain hopefully.
