I finally found the best orthopedic doctor in San Diego - It's Doctor Murphy!…read more Staff is great, office is fairly easy to access, and Doctor Murphy is the best of the best. Experienced, thorough, and great bedside manner. Additionally you may notice he is a "MD" not a "DO" like so many of the younger docs in San Diego. I've found that having an "MD" instead of a "DO" makes a big difference. Doctor Murphy is also the right age. He's old enough where he has obviously done thousands of procedures but young enough where you don't have to worry if he is past his prime. Again...I've found so many of the doctors in the San Diego are are just too young and inexperienced. I went in for a second opinion on an Achilles injury. Doctor Murphy was the only doctor to use an ultrasound (the last one did not) and the ultrasound showed not one but TWO small tears in my Achilles tendon. Luckily they were small enough that surgery was not necessary but rehab would be tricky to ensure it did not turn into a full tear (Kevin Durant injury). While the first doctor had also told me I had a partially torn Achilles that would heal on it's own, knowing the exact spots of the tears and the severity of the tears put me at ease and allowed us to better form a recovery plan. We now knew that I HAD to be careful. No guessing. Doctor Murphy made me feel just as important as any of the world class athletes he has as clients and that is important too. In the future if I ever have a more severe injury and require surgery I will only trust Doctor Murphy to do it. 5 stars! Thanks Doctor Murphy and staff!

They always answered the phone right away and he was very knowledgeable and easy to work with. He then referred me to the physical therapy office next door and that's where the issues began. Since the first time I called, nobody ever picks up, I called 20+ times in a span of 2 weeks and each time the automated phone system made me listen to a 5 minute message about the history of San Diego Sports Medicine and the different location's phone numbers and then would proceed to hang up on me. The few times it did let me leave a message, nobody ever got back to me. It seems like nobody works at the front desk for some reason. When they finally got back to me, they made an appointment for me with the specific PT that Dr.Koretoff had requested. I was 3 weeks out from the earliest appointment which was not ideal but I had no choice but to wait. When I finally received the appointment reminder the week before the appointment, it said that the appointment will be with someone else, and not the person I had made the appointment with. The person at the front desk even confirmed that it will be with the PT I requested but that's not what they inputted in the system. As a result, I now have to wait another week to start PT. They offered no way to reconcile the situation even though it was their fault, and basically the conclusion was "tough luck, you have to pay for our mistake." In a separate conversation with the front desk again, they were explaining to me the difference between paying out of pocket vs going through insurance. They gave me the out of pocket rate but said that they can't confirm what the cost will be with insurance until I come in so I explained my deductible and the terms on my coverage to get her advice, the answer I got verbatim was "I've explained to you over and over again and it doesn't seem like you're understand so I think I'm wasting my time here." WTF? She only explained to me once, and basically indirectly called me dumb and told me I'm wasting her time? That's no way to talk to any patient especially if I'm being respectful. This is absolutely unacceptable. I don't care if you're having a bad day, you shouldn't be talking to people like that period, let alone if your job is customer service. This is absolutely the worst experience I've ever had with any front desk/customer service. It's like they hate their jobs. Do you guys no vet people before hiring them?

When it comes to his ability to manage the care of patients, I learned the hard way that he truly doesn't understand what he's doing. My estradiol levels were elevated slightly above the high end of the normal range. He decides to prescribe Anastrozole, an estrogen blocker or aromatase inhibitor, at a dosage of 3mgs per week and tapering off to 1mg per week. he truly was guessing on dosage because retrospectively that dosing was way too high. Dr. Bronner didn't run any bloodwork for over a year, despite my repeated requests, and when bloodwork was actually done, my estradiol was at a non-detectable level. Low Estradiol levels caused my fascia to dry up considerably and 9 fascial adhesions formed along my anterior fascial chain and I couldn't walk without severe pain for over 2 years. Dr. Bronner never took responsibility for this major f**k up and even tried to cover his tracks with some AI generated papers in an effort to mitigate the risk of being sued. I would be very very cautious about putting your trust in Bronner Handwerger. As I went searching for a new physician, I found consensus amongst Bronner's peers that he is considered a hack. I sought treatment at this clinic for severe right knee pain and left feeling completely dismissed…read more My experience was especially disappointing because I had previously worked with another physical therapist years ago who conducted a thorough evaluation and ultimately referred me to a specialist clinic where I was formally fitted for a custom knee brace for my left knee. That level of care helped me understand my condition and provided a path forward. At this clinic, the evaluation consisted primarily of X-rays and having me walk a few steps back and forth. Based on that minimal assessment, I was told they didn't think anything was wrong. Despite clearly explaining that I suffer from significant knee pain and that my symptoms are affecting my daily life, there was no meaningful attempt to identify the cause, discuss treatment options, evaluate my strength or mobility in depth, or provide any plan for managing the pain. What made the experience even more frustrating was that I specifically told them about my previous knee brace and the circumstances that led to it being prescribed. Rather than exploring whether a similar evaluation or referral might be appropriate for my current right knee issues, I was left sitting for roughly 20 minutes before an administrative staff member came in simply to show me knee brace options they happened to have in stock. To add insult to injury, I paid nearly $150 out of pocket after insurance for what amounted to little more than X-rays, a brief walk across the room, and being shown products for sale. I received no meaningful assessment, no treatment plan, no referral, and no support for the severe knee pain that brought me there in the first place. I came looking for professional medical guidance and a thorough physical therapy assessment. Instead, I felt like my concerns were brushed aside and the focus shifted to selling products rather than understanding why I am experiencing significant pain. Patients deserve to be listened to, evaluated carefully, and given clear recommendations. Unfortunately, my experience was a costly waste of time and money.

In January 2011 I suffered an injury that was later diagnosed and confirmed (through an MRI) as a torn labrum. While I wasn't in pain for my day-to-day activities, this injury prevented me from playing baseball. I was told that I needed surgery to repair it. I've always believed that surgery is a LAST resort. So I was determined to exhaust all other options first. Fortunately I met Dr. Lathrop and he provided me with a viable alternative to surgery. I decided to give Dr. Lathrop's treatment a try. I was both very skeptical and hopeful. After a few treatments my skepticism grew because I didn't see much improvement - though Dr. Lathrop was assuring me that the injury was healing. We finally reached the stage where there was significant improvement in my range of motion but I was still experiencing pain when I tried throwing a baseball. Thinking that the treatment had failed (my only criteria for success was that I would get back on the baseball field) I decided to get another MRI and go to an orthopedic surgeon so he could "fix me." To my surprise, the orthopedic surgeon said that he could see no evidence of the initial tear and that the reason I was still feeling pain was because I had "frozen shoulder." He then recommended I do some physical therapy to address this new condition. After a few months of doing the physical therapy, I was able to get back on the baseball field. I even played in a tournament last October and the shoulder responded great. I highly recommend to anyone who is considering surgery to first see Dr. Lathrop. It then infiltrated during the procedure and was still left in my arm. This is called NEGLIGENCE. Note that I am a perfectly healthy person who has no risk factors for complications, so this could happen to you as well. Don't be fooled by how nice the nurses are or how well landscaped or pretty the facility is. Dr. Guy, the anesthesiologist, and the staff couldn't be bothered to spend five minutes to remove my painful IV even though that is standard of care. I spoke up about it several times. They still got paid, so who cares, right? My UCSD PCP, Dr. MacFarlane, essentially told me I was a nut job who made up my symptoms ("overly sensitive due to medical trauma") when I went to him in tears two weeks later still in intense pain and with symptoms of nerve compression. I then dropped UCSD Health as my provider due to his disgusting, negligent evaluation of my injury as well as Dr. Copur's failure to follow up or provide any post-op instructions for IV infiltration. I do have medical PTSD from a previous medical error that occurred with my anesthesia when I had surgery for cancer years ago in my 20s. Any procedure with anesthesia is VERY hard for me to do. I had this talk with Drs. Copur and Guy, as well as all nurses who saw me in pre-op. They violated my body and my trust anyway through their sloppy "care," as did Dr. MacFarlane when he weaponized my trauma against me. Which makes it all so much worse. I had to establish care with Scripps to get a proper evaluation. I have now been diagnosed, and have an EMG pending that will evaluate nerve damage. I start physical therapy this week. I hope it helps so my arm will stop hurting and I can regain all my physical strength that's been lost. There is no accountability, ever, for bad medical professionals unless you're dead or lose a limb, so getting my arm rehabbed is my goal.

It was clear that certain staff members in critical positions are not trained -- or not willing -- to de-escalate, listen, or handle difficult situations with basic empathy. What I experienced felt more like ego and defensiveness than patient care. My provider has been supportive, but the front-end leadership turned an already stressful medical situation into something unnecessarily painful. No patient who is already struggling should walk out feeling worse because of the staff's attitude. UCSD is a respected institution -- but this experience shows that some individuals do not uphold the standard the institution's name carries. I tried to establish care with a primary care physician, and the experience has been an absolute nightmare. At my first appointment, I checked in early, only to sit in the lobby for over an hour and a half waiting to be seen. No updates, no communication--just sitting there while the doctor took forever. Eventually, I had to leave because I couldn't wait indefinitely. When I rescheduled and came back, I was 15 minutes late due to circumstances beyond my control. Despite the fact that they wasted an hour and a half of my time at my previous visit, they refused to see me and said they didn't have staff to accommodate me. Their "solution"? Validating my parking. As if that makes up for the fact that I still don't have a primary care physician and now have to wait months for another appointment. This place clearly does not value its patients' time or care about actually providing medical services. They expect you to wait indefinitely for them, but if you're just a few minutes late, they turn you away with zero regard for your health. Absolutely ridiculous. Avoid this place if you actually want reliable healthcare.
