Weinbach's Cuvee St Catherine Schlossberg is a grand cru riesling you'll find on the menus of Mini Bar or Benu and for good reason. It's a beautifully floral, light and crisp wine. Think acidic enough to balance the salinity but lightness of oysters, monkfish liver and squid. Also, great for toning down the heat of the touch of serrano chile but not so sweet as to overpower those flavors. For around $50US it's not the cheap sleeper but it's definitely an excellent price performance value regardless.

Upon inquiring where we could buy this lovely wine in our broken French the hostess at the restaurant pointed us across the street and as it turns out the restaurant and winery are owned by the same family. The winery has existed since 1562 according to the sign out the front so I assume that is correct. They make a couple of whites, a rose and a red Pinot noir. I tasted all of the wines they made and most were pretty decent and what was extremely surprising was the prices. At €5 for a Rose and €6 for the Pinot Noir I thought it was a bargain and ended up buying some wine there to bring back. So for €60 we walked away with 12 bottles of wine and it was better than wines I have paid a lot more for in the past. We finally opened the Rose this evening and it reminded me of not only how good this wine was but also that I had not written about this place yet :-)) The really interesting part of this whole experience was the fact that whilst our French was a bit weak we were able to converse with him in German and the whole wine tasting was done in German in a French winery...lol I would happily buy wine from here again and I hope to come back for more Rose in the future. If they have indeed been producing wine for 400 some odd years they must be doing something right :-))

The one woman there doing tasting as well as ringing up the cash register did her very best but it was clear she was overwhelmed. But she sold a lot of wine and that's what matters. We tasted several wines including a fantastic Blanc de Noirs Brut, a Riesling and a Pinot Gris. Delightful wines and since we're buying direct, the prices were quite reasonable. All the wineries were open selling their wines and if we had more times I would have visited them all but time was short so had to settle for a few. Dopff & Irion was the first on tour but by far the best. Their selection of Rieslings, Pinots, and Gewurztraminers are amazing including the Grand Crus. We have gotten a case of Grand Cru Gewurz and may go back for more because it was so goood!

Wanting to try the wine that they are famous for we searched out a place to sample. Several people suggested we try Hugel wines. We were greeted as soon as we entered by a friendly lady who offered us a chance to sample their wines. 2-3 tastes later we had picked out a bottle to take with us. The town it's self is decorated for the season and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit and I'm sure we will have fond memories of a great time when we open the bottle we picked up

They produce around 100,000 bottles per year. I came here on a tour. While the tasting was a bit more expensive than some other tour stops, the number of wines shared was generous. The wines themselves were excellent. The winemaker's son gave a thorough explanation of each wine. He was highly engaging, friendly, and proud of the work they did at the winery. He even shared a look at a 1949 bottle of Gewurtztraminer-one of the first produced after WW2. The Muscat and the Rieslings (both the old vines version and a younger iteration) were excellent. Everything I tried was very good, making the decision of "what to buy" quite a challenge.
