I will never shop at any Michael's ever again thanks to the actions of this location, and the…read moremanagement at the KC district level. This is an incredibly long story that goes back many months to June. I will summarize the best I can. I had a very important package being sent to me via UPS. This package was signature and ID required. I missed the UPS person by minutes as they came outside of the window shown in the UPS app. Instead of trying to deliver it again the next day, UPS took it to the closest "UPS Access Point" which is this Michael's. A thief beat me to Michael's to retrieve my package, and the on duty manager released the package valued at nearly $1000 to a random stranger who was in no way authorized to pick it up. When I went to pick it up, I was told I already picked it up. I involved the OPPD, and the store admitted they released an ID and signature required package to some random person without even checking with me to see if it was okay. The on duty manager and the store manager admitted fault and that they did not follow UPS procedures. I was told by the store manager that there would be a swift resolution to this and I was told to send my invoice for the package to the store manager's email. I was told this was a "learning experience", and that their staff had learned a valuable lesson about following UPS policies and procedures more carefully. I'm glad I could provide such a valuable lesson at my own time and expense. Weeks turned into months and there was no resolution. The manager stopped returning my phone calls or responding to my emails. I was told a district manager was going to be contacting me, and it never happened. I haven't heard anything from Michael's in many months at this point. The person who stole my package was caught by OPPD, but that was a dead end - financially anyway. The company I bought it from pointed the finger at UPS, and UPS pointed the finger at Michael's. Although Michael's accepted responsibility, I never got any compensation from them. In the end, I worked with my credit card company to charge back the amount and was able to provide the police report and other information from the OPPD to prove I never got the package and I did get my money back that way. I will never shop here again, and I strongly caution you against using the UPS Access Point here as well. They will just give your package to anyone who asks for it.

Full disclosure I'm not a frequent shopper at craft stores and I tend to visit when I have…read moresomething very specific in mind that I need to pick up. On this occasion, I was on the hunt for some fake foliage for centerpieces at an upcoming party. When I walked in, it was as if nothing had changed in the five years or so since I'd last visited. It had that same craft store smell, the same layout, and much to my delight the same outrageous sales happening all over the store. I was able to snag a ton of fall themed foliage at quite the steal of a price, which was a welcome surprise. I never like how they try to sell you on a credit card a checkout but that's somewhat par for the course at big box stores these days. At any rate, I was in and out pretty fast and would return next time I need something like this in the future.

I guess it depends what you're looking for and what they have at the moment. Their prices seemed fair. It didn't all seem as homemade/artisan made as I expected, but I'll say didn't do much homework on the place to know exactly what to expect.

When I first walked in, I noticed a variety of cute women's clothing. As I went further back in the store, I thought there was a nice variety of gifts and it was very well organized. They have everything from Kansas City t-shirts, jewelry, children's clothing, trinkets, greeting cards, and more. As I was exploring, the owner (?) of the shop made it a point to chat with me and make me feel welcome. He spoke with me briefly but left me alone after that, which I appreciated because I get irritated if shop workers try to talk to me the entire time or hover. I ended up making it a point to buy something here because of the pleasant experience I had while shopping. From their website, I learned that their mission is to: "create new streams of income for people living in poverty and for Christian ministry and missionary efforts through global trade of products." They did have a lot of handmade items and things from different parts of the world. I highly recommend this shop if looking for a gift, especially if you're not sure what you're looking for!

I though the entrance to the gallery was very welcoming. It had a good amount of natural light and…read morethe it was kind of working the whole modern warehouse look - which has its appeal. I found The Prairiebrooke to be well designed to house art in its open, airy natural setting with an interesting metallic-y silver and bronze floor and recessed lighting. I think the venue actually made some of the art look more appealing to me. The guy working the room asked me if I needed anything, which I did not. I told him I was just in there to look. He told me to grab some complimentary cookies before heading back to work on framing. PG not only sells the work of artists, but they also specialize in custom framing and design display. I peaked into their workshop where they do the framing and it's more like a garage. They do some serious work back there; I think I even saw a flicker from a blowtorch. My thinking is, if a gallery spends that much of its space working to make your purchased painting framed so well, it's a two in one masterpiece. You don't have to buy a painting at location A and then drag it to location B for framing - it's just handy. I'm not sure about the presentation of the art in the back. I found a really cool Picasso-like painting shabbily hung in the coffee break room next to the fridge - huh? It was strange. Why did they need six offices anyways - it just took away the space needed in the main gallery room so that they were forced to hang paintings in poor places - like the break room where few customers wander anyways. If I were the artist, that would be unacceptable marketing on their part - I mean honestly, who would do that? I liked the main gallery though. The brick walls were fitting to the scheme of the design and the leather seating area was a nice touch. I really like how the guy trusted me enough to be alone in his space. Keep in mind, I had spent the last two hours being followed around by skeptical older women who thought I was trying to steal - so it was a relief to be able to relax in here without feeling like someone was breathing down your neck. And it was with the freedom that I broke the cardinal rule of gallery attendance: I took photos - gasp!

Now here's where it gets dicey. I'm at odds about the feelings I got from the place though. Pretty awkward and certainly had a tinge of "frame shop" as another reviewer so cleverly pointed out. I never felt I was in a gallery really. It was more like a place that housed art for framing. Here I was getting a "sales pitch" on the place having great, national artists without ever talking about any of the artists or maybe even the work itself. The owner of the gallery came over and we chatted. The "forced and faked" convo ensued and I was left with the heebie-jeebies. I enjoyed some of the art in the shop, just not the shop. What to do? Why look those artists up online perhaps for a purchase, of course. God Bless cyberspace, ebay, and the "shopping cart" checkout system.
