The "parking" area can fit 5-7 cars so it's tight. The map of the area wasn't clear so we went down in the canyon area via the steep stairs. It's a rocky walk and you have to watch your step. We weren't sure if it looped around so we turned around and went back up the steep stairs which winded us both. I think it's easier if you follow the path straight and it gradually winds you down to the "canyon" floor so I would recommend that.

Spring Mill State Park is a 1,358-acre state park located about two hours south of Indy and about…read morethree miles east of Mitchell on SR 60. It was established in 1927. The park includes Pioneer Village, the Gus Grissom Memorial, a nature center, campgrounds, cycling lanes, and it also has a tennis court and a basketball court. Pioneer Village and Grissom Memorial are interpretive facilities. There's also Lakeview Activity Center and a Twin Caves Boat Tour. Spring Mill has programs throughout the year. Spring Mill Inn has 71 rooms, though I didn't stay overnight and can't review the Inn. I do know that the inn offers free wireless, a splash pad, a restaurant (The Millstone Dining Room), a complimentary coffee/tea station (24 hours), a game room, a gift shop featuring Indiana products (24 hours), satellite TV/DVD players, and the inn has an ATM. Like all Indiana state parks now, Spring Mill offers a motorized chair that can handle at least some of its trails for those with mobility issues. There are seven trails plus a two-mile mountain bike trail and a "stagecoach" trail. Trails range from accessible to easy to rugged. The majority of the trails are considered moderate. The trails range from 1/4 mile long up to 2.5 miles. There are some gorgeous trails here including a couple of lakes and caves - Donaldson Cave is terrific, the Twin Caves are great, and for those who like older cemeteries I recommend a stop at Hamer Cemetery. Spring Mill State Park is certainly not the most accessible of our state parks, however, it is a terrific place to camp for those who like it a little rougher. The Inn is a terrific option for those who prefer the indoor experience. In terms of the wheelchair, contacting the park in advance is typically recommended to make sure it's available. The best way to enjoy Indiana Parks is with an annual pass (seniors/military discounts), however, single-use entry is also an option.

I've been on both weekdays and weekends, and most weekdays you'll only share the place with a handful of people. It's $7 to enter the park (if someone's at the gates), $13 / night to camp, and $5.35/hour to rent a small boat or canoe. The forest hosts a lake for swimming (sand beach) or boating, two playgrounds, a plethora of grills, and many covered pavilions with picnic tables. Things to know before you go: there is no running water that I could see, however the restrooms were kept well stocked. This is also a place where you leave with everything you came in with, including trash. There are no trash cans available. I usually make it a habit to stop at the gas station headed back into town. ALSO: bring bug spray!

If someone is on the gate the price is $7 to enter and despite the fact that its a smaller park it does have a lake that allows for kayaking, fishing & electric trolling motors only. Jon boats & canoes can be rented by the hour and the lake has a beach area where a handful of children were taking advantage of the good weather. A lifeguard isn't provided but there is a changing house. There are grills within the park and we had a small portion of the lake to ourselves while grilling. There are picnic tables & benches around one side of the lake and it made for a peaceful break during the normal work week. Camping is available for tents and other sections for campers & RVs. The hiking is limited but if you combine all the trails & fire lanes its about 10 miles. The city of Ferdinand is what I call a sleepy little city and I mean that in the best way, so on a Wednesday I saw only a dozen people on this day and relaxed, avoided COVID and look forward to a time when its safe to try the local brewery & restaurants.

The park was renovated by the local Jaycees and partners back in 1985. There is a large paved parking lot next to the park which can easily hold the visitors to the area. There are multiple baseball fields on site and there appears to be a lot of parking that is paved. It didn't appear to have a problem with flooding even though the creek lies just beyond a wooded area to the south of the park. I did notice a playground for smaller kids near the entrance which cleverly uses the slope of the hill to add a long and winding slide. My only negative is that it is a long distance away from the ball diamonds which make it difficult for parents who wish to watch the game and keep an eye on their kids. I didn't see any playground for larger kids to use, though I may have missed it. (The parks website don't list features.) Another well kept park in Orange County. Our boat trip probably had 12 people - give or take. The boat tour was really informative and immersive. The tour guide shares in's and outs of how the cave was found, how they expanded, and how they created the business. You can see some fish, crawfish, and bats. The tour is done in lower level lighting from the light on the boat and with the tour guides flashlight. They also have a little section to "mine" for gemstones. You can buy a few different sizes in the gift shop and that was a fun way to do while we waited for the next tour.
