If you like your hiking: a. close to town; b. short but scenic; and c. have some payoff location that you don't see at all the other parks around town, then this is the spot for the Bloomington area!
Just minutes to the southwest of Bloomington, this 95.5 acre park features a beautiful cascading waterfall area only a short distance from the parking lot. But be aware that there is 141 feet of elevation change along the 1.1 mile loop. If you have trouble with stairs (or bring a dog that might not like them especially if they have small feet that can slip through the grids of each step), you may want to take the "long way" around.
Since I wasn't sure which way to walk, I took the gradual descent straight from the parking lot that leads to the rest area with restrooms and picnic tables. From there, I headed down a "road" until I saw a small red arrow sign that directed me to the path on the right. It was a pretty steady descent and as the path narrowed through the woods, I encountered more and more wet or muddy spots. I suggest wearing boots to help you with your footing and carry a change of shoes in your car since there is a good chance you will track some mud along with you.
I didn't take the spur trail that leads to a dam, but continued around back towards the entrance area. As the trail bottoms out, there is a wetland area with information posted and a small, slightly raised observation deck for looking over the wetland/marsh area. Lots of frog noises here.
The trail begins its ascent through the trees from there and before long, the sound of flowing water gets much louder. A gorgeous cascading waterfall has a nice cumulative drop though there isn't any single large waterfall more than a couple feet along the trail. Still, the day after rain in the area produced some beautiful images to experience.
And then you have to deal with over 100 stairs. Some are simple wooden blocked steps that reduce erosion on the path. Most are part of a series of metal stairs that average around twelve steps per flight with a place to step aside if you need to let others pass or take a break. Once you reach the top, you are just a short distance from the parking lot to your left.
The park has lots of birds and small critters, but I didn't see any tracks of larger animals along the way. Don't let that deter you from enjoying this beautiful spot.
