The nurses at IBCC are just downright amazing. It is inspiring how these women deal with…read moreterminally ill (and often cranky) patients every day, with smiles on their faces. Of course I can't say whether the medical professionals are actually any better at their jobs (fighting cancer) than any other office in the city, I don't have that data. Protocols differ depending on the type of cancer and they seem to be fairly standard. However, the compassion and professionalism at IBCC is far above standard. Side effects are expected with chemo, and most of them are pretty bad. You'd think the nurses and doctors here would accept that as par for the course, but they don't. They are genuinely concerned and look for a resolution when a patient tells them about an adverse effect from their chemical cocktail. A fridge and shelves full of room temp or cold snacks and drinks, pillows and blankets for those that get chilly, a massage therapist making her way around the room giving patients foot rubs, and a palpable happiness radiating off the staff all makes the time spent at chemo easier than it would otherwise be. My mom has said it a few times, and you can tell others feel the same; chemo isn't something you want to go through, but going through it at IBCC almost makes it enjoyable.

Dr Ghosh has been practicing in the Cedar Rapids area for years. He was formerly at St Luke's, where he helped to open their oncology and hematology department. Last year they parted ways and he opened the Ghosh Center for Oncology and Hematology. I've seen the way he treats his patients, and I'm always impressed. The key point here is that he treats the patients, not the cancer. At the Ghosh Center they focus on the entire patient and quality of life, not treating the cancer in spite of the patient. That may seem like a trivial difference but when you're talking about chemotherapy it's a very fine balance. I, unfortunately, know my way around a doctors office or hospital fairly well. I'm not a doctor (I only play one on the internet) but I appreciate that Dr. Ghosh includes me in the plan of care when it comes to my mom. He's very good about giving me all the information I need to make an informed decision and listening to my concerns about any drugs or therapies he prescribes. His staff? Almost more impressive than Dr Ghosh. The nurses and office staff are always kind, thoughtful, and caring. It's pretty incredible that a group of people can make something like 5 hour chemo treatments something a person looks forward to. Without the fantastic people administering chemo, answering questions, handling billing, and seeing patients the Ghosh Center wouldn't be as welcoming and successful as it is. I really like that Dr Ghosh isn't solely focused on medicine and chemotherapy. He's suggested more "eastern medicine" options than I'd expect from most doctors. I'm always happy to find a doctor that doesn't just jump to writing a prescription to fix a symptom. Again, I wish you didn't need to find an oncology office at all, but if you need one, the Ghosh Center is where you want to be.

I used to go to a local massage school in Los Angeles because it was affordable and I could usually get convenient appointments. I hadn't had a massage in a pretty long time, and never in Iowa City. I was very, very surprised! Melicia Sissel was professional and she really listened to me, my body, and gave me suggestions about what I could do for some foot pain that I was having. The massage was one of the better ones that I've had. She was spot-on with the pressure, and adjusted it when I asked her for more. I'm definitely going back!
