I had been here about fifteen years ago on a solo trip when I waited in an endless queue for a takeout order. That same line still existed a couple of weeks ago when Jamie W and I visited on my return to Lisbon. This time, we decided to try the dine-in option which I wasn't even aware of until I saw a YouTube video from a travel vlogger who recommended it. Sure enough, the line was a lot shorter and moved quite a bit faster. It turned out they serve up to 400 people in an expansive dining room. The menu goes beyond the pastels and offers croquettes, salt cod fritters, various sandwiches, and other pastries. Of course we ordered the 1,6€ Pasteis de Belem. Four of them (Photo 6). Based on a secret recipe dating back to 1837, they compare favorably to the multitude of competitors, even Manteigaria, whose shops appear almost everywhere in Lisbon. The custard filling is creamy but not excessive and it's not overly sweetened. The standout is the thick and flaky crust, tender with a touch of salt. The 2€ Iced Coffees with Milk was a nice complement. Since we didn't have time to get lunch while sauntering through Belem, we decided to take advantage of their cafe menu and each ordered the 3,9€ Tuna and Mayo with Boiled Egg and Lettuce on Mixed Wheat Toast (Photo 9). I know it sounds simple, but it satisfied much like the kombini sandos in Tokyo. Totally worthy of my 8,000 milestone. Just awesome sauce Pastel de nata: 10/10 -- I looooved this pastel de nata the most out of all of the different places I tried. I'll post a full round up but this one deserves its own post. It's the original since 1837 for a reason! it was incredibly flaky and crisp. the filling was just the right sweetness and creamy! Pasteis de belem is a must try! Super accessible by tram 15e, it was easy to walk over from the tram stop and hardly had any wait for me to find a seat and order. there are indoor and patio/outdoor seating options available.

The egg tart was very good as other reviewers noted but the experience with the service detracts enough to not come back. The atmosphere was very similar to Cafe du Monde in New Orleans although we have always had decent service any of the three of those. As the quantity of egg tarts are plentiful across the island, we had them several times elsewhere. This place is very touristy which is not bad at all, but if the staff doesn't like tourists, then why work here? Over all, good place to visit once but I would not likely return.

Founded in 1954, and tucked in a residential part if Belém, Pastelaria O Careca has earned…read morenotoriety for their Sugar Croissants, in English "Baldman's Croissant" but in any Language a destination-worthy delicacy that sees the Café's interior crowded from open till close. Decorated like most of Lisbon's Pastelaria, but with a sizable outside terrace shaded by trees more than quadrupling capacity, it is upon entry that guests are greeted in Portuguese, a largely local patronage finding English lacking and few items labeled thus leading to decisions based on prior experience and one's eyes. Well priced and accommodating, €1.10 per Pastel de Nata finding the shell a bit soggy but Custard jiggly with a hint of Cinnamon, do consider the Pork Cheek Pie which contains plenty of Meat as well as Castanha Ovo featuring sugary Egg Yolk inside a mm-thick skin. Cleansing the palate with Coffee, carbonated Water alongside complimentary, it is safe to say that "Cronuts" have nothing on Café do Careca's fried Viennoiserie shellacked in Granulated Sugar while a Walnut-topped Noz is arguably even more memorable.

Really nice place!…read more Interrior wight and wight marble really small and lots of old people come here. Grate fresh made cakes. And the staff speeks really good english! Suggest to try the carrot an chocolate cake! Price is like 1,50 or bit more for a cake :) I recomend it if u are in the aria
