There are opportunities for competition if the child is interested but no pressure if that is not their thing. From the owner: A community-based dojo, we value good character and community relations as much as, if not more…read morethan, technical ability. Like other modern Japanese martial ways (budo) such as kendo, judo, and aikido, the purpose of karatedo lies not in the victory over one's opponent, but the disciplining of one's body and the forging of one's mind and spirit. Over the course of hundreds of years, karate developed in the Ryukyu Kingdom (today Japan's Okinawa Prefecture) through an admixture of indigenous fighting arts and imported East Asian combative systems. As a vassal state of Japan since 1609 and a center of trade between Japan, China, and Southeast Asia, three distinct styles emerged among two port cities, Naha and Tomari, and the inland capital of Shuri. These would evolve into what we collectively know today as karatedo.

I took my first class at JKA about 4 months ago and have been hooked ever since! I had taken…read morekarate, aikido and jiu-jitsu about 10 yrs ago and wanted to get back into a martial art again. The only thing I knew about JKA was that it was Traditional Shotokan Karate (and I didn't even know what that meant.). I just knew I wanted to study a traditional form of karate and I was hoping to find a dojo oin the north side. I have so many positives to talk about that I don't think this page has enough room. First, the Sensei, Sensai Michael Arab, is fantastic!! (Senpai Lopez is as well!). The class is a mixed level and his skills at teaching reaches everyone in the room. He takes his time to challenge, encourage, push, watch from afar as you work and teach and explain traditional Shotokan movement and movement concepts. I smile in each class watching this true master of the art form teach multiple level classes, approach each student for personal growth and encouragement. I feel truly blessed that I have found his dojo, this traditional form of shotokan karate, this teacher and the fellow students because I am learning so much from a serious teacher. Secondly, the other students in the class have also been warm, welcoming, friendly, and encouraging. They have each taken a moment to introduce themselves and help me when I'm confused or not completely aware of what I was doing. Thirdly, the JKA is inside the Japanese Cultural Center on the second floor and the dojo is steeped in tradition without being intimidating if you have never been in a traditional dojo setting or if you are a beginner. The dojo is clean and comfortable in this setting. It is located 1/2 block west of the Belmont el and super easy to get to. My only complaint - I want to now take class every day and they don't offer classes every day.

The teachers and staff are welcoming while also firm, experienced, and superbly knowledgeable. They know children and treat them with care and respect that makes you instantly care and respect them in return. It's hard, it can be intense, and it demands focus - just what we wanted for our children. I cannot more highly recommend KMI, not just for the activity itself, but for the community in which its taught (arguably more important than any other feature).
