This ain't your Grandma's fabric store!…read more After learning my first grandchild was in the cooker, I started to think about making a baby quilt. I rarely sew, and had never attempted piecing. But now that I was about to enter a new level of passage, I figured it was time to do what Grandmas in my family have done for generations... make a grand baby welcome quilt! I checked out a lot of fabric stores in my area, but liked BJ's best. It is a small shop located out in the middle of almost nowhere, south of Tillamook. It is stocked with lots of modern and unique fabrics, trimmings, patterns, and notions. Their extensive display of sample quilts makes it easy to imagine the possibilities and sets them apart from other shops I visited. And imagining possibilities was just up my alley. My DIL selected gray, white, and lavender for the nursery... and I could choose whatever accent color I wanted for the crib quilt. (Hunh? What happened to pink or blue?) Lucky for me, BJ and Kathy have an eye for contemporary fabrics and had what I needed to make the quilt I wanted to make. What a relief! I also opted to take a quilt making workshop. It was a great investment! Kathy was patient, kind, and nonjudgmental. She guided me through the process and gently reinforced positive outcomes without focusing on my technical issues... like not sewing straight and having trouble with the math. (Okay, you called my bluff! Yes, we did.) Firstly, Center Diamond has a fabulous selection of fabrics and the prices are more reasonable than you'd expect. The fabric is sorted into themes and by color-- a feast for the senses! Maybe it's because I've spent most of my time at Joanns (R.I.P.) I was delightedly surprised that they carry flour sack towel fabric. It had never occurred to me to make my own kitchen towels! They have an extensive variety of tools and notions as well as fun vinyl decals to showcase one's sewing love. There's a great selection of patterns with finished samples for inspiration and several kits and a mahoosive selection of stackers, fat quarters, and jelly rolls. The staff was wonderful here! They were incredibly friendly, helpful, and fun. We bought a pattern and they even printed it out for us. My daughter and I can't wait to return! If you're a fabric crafter, do yourself a favor and stop into Center Diamond, you won't be disappointed!

Boersma's has a huge selection of fabric. What I have noticed lately is that the colors of fabrics are drifting towards "dull." I quilt with bright fabrics and they are becoming hard to find at Boersma's. I prefer to shop in a physical store rather than online, but with the closing of so many fabric/quilt shops there are limited choices of where to go. If Boersma's does not stock bright fabrics, I may need to turn to the internet. Shopping for fabric on the internet is iffy. I have received some wonderful fabrics with colors and patterns that I love, but I have also received some fabrics that had I seen in person, I would not have purchased. I really like Boersma's, but need more variety in brightness of fabrics.

I found my wonderful Sewing Teacher here and I've been quilting for a year and a half and sewing with her. I have almost finished three quilts and I'm going to do one more. I also was able to come here and get all my backing, batting and border materials for my quilts and I found that they have once a month class for quilting where I will be coming shortly to get instruction on hand quilting since it's pretty rare and you can't seem to find people to help you do that but they do here. Boersma is a wonderful old Sewing Center that has everything they even have vintage machines for sale which is right up my alley. I skip two Joanna's when I drive to here. I only go here for my main supplies!

After buying the machine they offered a free class to teach me how to use it. The class was fun and instructive. I appreciate their service options for my machine which gives me piece of mind for the life of the machine. They have good quality fabric and thread. The only thing I wish they offered is pop culture related fabric designs. I'm really happy we have this resource in our community.

It is only worth fixing on my machine if the rest of the machine is in decent shape. Victor checked it out and found it is worth fixing. But before going to that expense he did all he could to give them a bit more life. I'm sure I will have them replaced relatively soon. He could have encouraged me to buy a new machine instead, which would have benefited the store and cost me much more. He didn't do that. I so appreciate his honesty.

There was a tiny corner in the back with fabric and a few odds and ends throughout. I was in the store for no more than five minutes saw everything and left. Clerk who I guess was the owner was hiding in her plastic corner. Never came out to assist or ask what I might be looking for. You would have to hand the yardage to her and she cuts it behind her glass/plastic partition. Not a positive nor friendly experience.

I found a beautiful panel and coordinates with gorgeous greens and blues, along with shore birds, greys, and browns. No idea what pattern I will use but it'll be a beautiful reminder of a wonderful trip. The wonderful lady working there patiently helped me choose some fabrics and answered my newby quilter questions about things :) I also found a couple appliqué patterns depicting local lighthouses, so I had to get those, too! I also picked up a kit for the "row by row" selection unique to this shop. I had never heard of this, but apparently it's an annual thing along the Oregon coast that quilt shops design these pieces around a theme and then you can get patterns and kits from each shop. Sure wish I had done my research and know about this earlier, though I'm sure my hubby is relieved it was our last day :)
