I had heard good things about both Dr. Ayer's that are in the same office with Dr. Chien so I referred a client to her... so embarrassed I didn't read these reviews. My clients experience was EXACTLY as described in the other reviews. She barged in the office with out identifying herself as the doctor demanding to know why the patient was not answering her phone! Because they are in a doctors appointment - DUH! She then proceeded to have the remainder of the appointment via telephone - why bother having someone drive to an appointment if it's by phone? Dr. Chien has been our family doctor for over a decade. She has been very responsive to our emails about our urgent health problems. She will arrange an appointment next day during the weekdays, and she called and gave us instructions during the weekend and followed by an appointment next Monday. Dr. Chien refered me to see the specialist, who resolved my long term vision problem. My wife and I suffered shingle attacks and covid infections in the past, and we were treated in timely manner. Utterly pathetic and disgraceful practice by this doctor! Immoral and inhumane person let alone a physician!!! Zero or negative stars should be offered because that's what she deserves! My insurance switched and I had to find a new doctor earlier this year. Found Chien on UHC's site near me and thought why not, deciding based only on her resume that she went to Stanford. I waited inside her tiny exam room on the day of my physical. Received a call but didn't answer bc I didn't recognize the caller ID. A minute later, without a knock on the door, this middle-aged woman flung the door open and demanded to know what my phone number is... confused and I was hesitant to give my digits to a complete stranger, she barked at me again. So I gave her my number and she dialed it right then and there. I looked down on my phone and it was the same number that had just called a couple mins ago. Really confused but she practically yelled at me to "pick up" so I did and she turned and just walked away!! Started asking me about my health history and all that jazz and I could hear her talking going down the hallway. I then asked "why are we talking on the phone?" She then said that "it's their Covid protocol" I came in for an annual physical in person! Had to sign that I didn't have Covid symptoms, wore a mask and it's year 2024! Covid was like 4 years ago and I have had all the shots and boosters!!! WTH! How RUDE!!! Absolutely no bedside manners and so incredibly unprofessional! She ordered a bunch of lab work and send me on my way. Appt was less than 20 mins or so. She changed my thyroid medication based on my lab but had she spend just a little more time during my visit I'd have told her that when my former doctor changed my medication my thyroid level went whacky so very likely my thyroid level will react the same way and maybe not changing my prescription because it's been stabilized for years. Sure enough, i wasn't feeling well under the new medication and I emailed her if she could change the dosage back. Waited for days until her staff called to schedule for another visit to discuss my lab. Other than my known issues with thyroid, everything else looked great so why can't she just switch my meds back??? Besides, I never ever wanted to see her again in person cuz she's despicably curt and ill mannered and honestly I don't want to be any where near such pest! Told her staff I'm busy can the doctor please respond to my email. Still waited for a few days without any reply. So I send CVS to prompt a renewal of my old prescription and finally got a "it's done" from Chien in my email. I was on my way to get back to the old prescription and told myself that I need to look for another doctor for next year. My husband informed me that there's a certified mail from the doctor's office and upon receiving it, it was a bill for $53 office visit in April from Chien. I never saw her in April and my initial appointment with her was from February 2024 and we've already paid her. Confused I called UHC and found out that Chien charged me for email communication!!!! She billed me for 10 mins of "tech" when I emailed her to change my prescription back and waited for days only to have her say "it's done" how the heck is that 10 mins???? Unbelievable!!!! It's not the money but this is beyond ridiculous! My husband paid and I vowed to immediately start looking for another doctor! Then 3 months flew by and we are in August and my prescription is running low, so I hit the renewal button and waited until I only had 3 pills left and got a message from CVS that my renewal was DENIED!! Because Chien stated that I'm no longer her patient???? I haven't called to end my relationship with her nor did I get any notice in the mail or electronically so WTH!?!?!?! She knew that I have to take my thyroid medication for LIFE as my daily life depends on it! It's literally life saving medicine that she knowingly has denied! This is unethical! During the visit, she promised that she would send the prescription to my pharmacy, but the pharmacy told me that they did not receive it. 2. Be careful she will bill you if you message her on my chart, because I didn't receive the prescription, I messaged her, wanted to confirm if she sends the meds to the correct pharmacy.Then I'm billed. 3. It is very difficult to communicate with her clinic, the front desk not knowledgeable, cannot answer any of your basic questions, and keeps asking your name, even if you tell her many times, she will still forget after a few minutes. 4. I do not recommend Dr. Chien. My previous doctor closed her practice and referred me to her in 2020. I had one in-office physical last year. Her staff didn't know how to accurately measure blood pressure. Dr. Chien conducted part of my exam by phone. When she finally came in, my physical was brief and inadequate compared to previous doctors. No rapport; just business. Last month, I needed my Rx renewed. Her staff said I needed a physical first and it had to be virtual because I didn't have the Covid booster shot. I already had Covid, so the booster is unnecessary. My Rx is based on blood tests that she already had from my cardiologist. I sent a portal message asking for the Rx renewal and if I could have an in-person physical. A week later I received a certified letter saying she would stop providing medical care in 30-days and to find a new doctor. "The reason for this is lack of patient-doctor rapport." As others have said, she is cold and impersonal, wants to run her practice remotely, and doesn't have a backup doctor so you have to go to the ER. The office, portal, and billing are perplexing. read more

I can live with okay chair side manner but, incompetence is another thing. I just did not feel like she cared about me. And secondly her office staff is clueless. First, they did not follow up with me after my appt. I called for my test results but the doctor was unavailable. A staff person called me back with my test results but she did not know what they meant. My doctor should be calling me with my results! My previous doctors have always called me with my results. Secondly, they rescheduled my follow up appt and then when I came in, they were all confused about why I was there. I am utterly disappointed with the ethics level of the clinic and Dr Chien. Dr Chien refused to provide annual exam on me, because I am a hospital floor nurse taking care of Covid-19 patients. When I take care of Covid-19 patients, I am always gowned up like an astronaut. I wear a special respirator (better than N95) with a hood, wear double gloves, and gown. The Covid patients are in rooms with medical-graded filters and negative air pressure. Even if I am Covid negative and asymptomatic, Dr Chien would still refuse to see me in person. She would only do tele-consult with people like me. This was a total tight slap on my face, and show of disrespect to healthcare and essential workers. Is this how doctors would behave? I made the appointment with the clinic months ago, confirmed the appointment the morning itself and drove all the way to the clinic. Little did I know that I would be refused care without personal apology from the doctor. In addition, the clinic did not offer its other doctors who could see me for a physical exam. This is totally unacceptable and unethical. This is very upsetting to me, because I had seen this doctor for a couple of years, and this was the dignified treatment I received. read more

Even though I have had my good share of doctors over the years, Dr. Chien is the best doctor I have ever had. I would have given her 6 stars if I could in a 1-5 star system. Among the things for which I like about her, the following stands out: She always listens and answers/explains to my health concerns with patience and understanding in an efficient way. She is very professional with her vast and up-to-date medical knowledge when she treats me. She would order tests and /or refer me to specialists whenever deemed appropriate based on her good judgment. She follows up with an e-mail to me with her take on the tests results, and indicates the next step to take to address the specific concern. She always replies to my e-mails promptly. Two of the e-mails I got back from her were written at 3:29am and 6:42am! Recently I sent an e-mail to her on a Friday night before the long holidays. I got the answer back the next day with detailed instructions. That really eased my mind. Her caring and dedication are simply impressive. Every time I saw her, she's always energetic and focused toward her patients like my husband and me. Furthermore, her office staffs are always friendly and helpful. This letter is in regard to the terrible treatment I received from Dr Jane W . Chien on October 26, 2017 in San Jose, CA 95118. I was assigned her as she was the only doctor available since my regular doctor was out of the office that day. She is the worst doctor and person I have ever met. I left the office very upset. My daughter was with me in the examining room . She is not well, but wrote her health problems on my record That has nothing to do with me. Dr Chien said I needed to go to the hospital and spend the night. I did not want to and refused. She stood a couple of feet from me and starred at me I asked her to leave. After several minutes, she finally left. Then she returned to the examining room with another lady doctor They stood there together looking at me I asked her again to leave. After about 12 minutes of my begging them to leave the room and seeing how upset I was, she finally left. Dr. Chien had also asked me daughter to leave the examining room with her so she could talk about me. My daughter refused. Dr. Jane Chien was nothing but trouble to me and I finally left the room. I see her every six months and we review the results of my blood tests and other tests that have been performed. She is completely ignorant in dealing with the special needs of her patients and is absolutely arrogant towards family members trying to explain and steward the healthcare needs of their incapacitated relatives. Chien's brazen lack of compassion for her patients and the supporting family is beyond all comprehension and I have never encountered this level of callousness from any other practicing Physician. Chien is no longer tending our family's healthcare needs. I made this decision for numerous reasons, but the last straw was due to her inability to correct my Coumadin INR levels after four months of repeated testing with only sporadic changes in the medication dosage. I went to the Heart Associates Coumadin Clinic and they had my INR levels back into a normal range in just five days and have kept it under control ever since. However in the past month I have tried to reach her because I needed my medication adjusted and I can't reach her office at all! I have been going to Dr. Chien for almost 15 years, because that is who my mother went to. I very rarely ever need to see a doctor, but when I do, I expect to get a little bit of compassion and understanding. I went in a year ago to have a lump on my wrist looked at. As expected, she took one look at it and said it is just a ball of fat and that it happens with age. And rushed out the door. This is how every appointment seems to go and I absolutely dread having to make an appointment, but having to look for a new doctor is a tedious process. The lump has since began to push against the vein it resides next too and is causing numbness in my hand. I have been seeing Dr. Chien for most of my life (I am 30). After reading the other reviews about her, I have to say I disagree. She is very intelligent and asks all the right questions to identify the issue. It is true that she is quick to get out the door, but that is because she is in such high demand. She referred a great gyno that I have been going to for years and couldn't live without. She is quick and to the point just how a professional doctor should be. She was my parents' doctor, and now mine, and will someday be my childrens' as well. I would recommend her if you want a serious, intelligent doctor who knows exactly what she is doing. This review is regarding the office staff competency. I have been trying to pay a bill for quite some time now. If I was lucky enough to get through to a live person, that person didn't know how to do a credit card payment. She couldn't find the drawer either. The phone recording says to press #3 for billing, but when you press 3, you get someone who speaks terrible English and tells you he isn't the billing department. I asked him why the recording says to press #3 then. He tells me to press #2 for the receptionist, so I did that and that was a fiasco. Could not get that done. Will have to do things the old fashioned way and mail in a check. Even tried the week later to get a live person on the phone, the bill says to call between 9-5:30, have been calling since 9:00, with more recordings that they are not there. Office staff is incompetent. Will have to switch doctors, this just will not work. Imaging if I was really sick and needed to get through. Unacceptable. read more

Dr Jane Chien has been my MD for several years and I would say the only reason she remained my doctor was because it is so inconvenient to find another. However, after a few visits now - one where I had pains in my chest, and she chuckled because I am in my 40s and according to her not likely to be suffering from anything serious - although it was very scary and serious for me and didn't warrant a chuckle; then a visit for scalp issues that she dismissed in 2 minutes and was out the door with no further testing and now 2 years later I am losing my hair, some of which will not grow back due to the condition that I have (that has since been diagnosed by someone else). Had she spent some time to diagnose the problem then I may not be losing hair. I have also seen her for some not so serious visits where her bedside manner lacked tremendously and she seemed rushed to get me out and move on to the next patient. I am done. If you want someone who listens and seems to care - this is not the doctor. She's scoffed at me when I was crying and does always act as if she's waiting to get out the door to the next patient. I am a fan for now. Why: she is bright and has very good credentials, she is up to speed on the technology that as a patient I want (access to my chart, etc.) I recently saw Dr. Chien and while she was "all business" I don't expect my doctor to be my friend. She gave me opportunity to ask questions, asking me several times if I had anything to add. Yes she did type away but she captured all I was saying and that is good. The office is big on accessing all your information on the internet and I like that! I had blood work done yesterday and today I got an email telling me to log in for my results. I also like that I could email her a question about a Rx and it was responded to the same day. If you want an intelligent doctor with access to ALL your medical docs and the ability to email and ask questions then Jane Chien is good. Don't be intimidated by her people, this is your life. Ask away, be polite and get involved with your provider. As far as the office staff I was polite enough to me even telling me if I didn't care to wait next time to make an apt first thing in the morning or first thing in the afternoon. I have a follow up apt in July and will see how that goes also. BTW, changing a doctor is as easy as pie so don't let that defer you from doing so unless of course you are ill or have many complicated health issues, in which case you should do your research and then request a change. read more

My husband and I have been cared by Dr.Jane for almost a decade. She is sharp, quick, and very precise on any health issue. Her examination is always beyond what we are consulting her for. Once she recognized my husband's skin cancer -- a little dot on the face while he was for his annual check-up. She prompted him to see the dermatologist immediately. When we are with her, she examines us from head to toe without begging for. In regarding to the communication, we love her use of technology. When we are in doubt of our occurred health problem, we email her first - describe symptom and sometimes attaching the picture to the email. She replies back promptly suggesting the necessity to see her or not. Also, we can access our health records and lab results through MyHealth website. It's convenient. We have been through many internal doctor in the past. Dr. Chien is one among many best! I trust her my whole heart. read more

I saw Dr. Chien for back and sleeping concerns and was not impressed. She barely made eye contact with me during the entire visit and instead looked at her computer. She was very cold and awkward during the entire appointment and acted as if she was in a rush to see the next patient. As a medical professional, I was disappointed by her lack of people/counseling skills. She also seemed to laugh-off my concerns, which was extremely frustrating. Her scheduling staff also seemed very unorganized when I tried to make an appointment and her nurse did not return my phone calls after I received a message from them regarding lab results.
