Erected in 1711, this equestrian statue depicts Johann Wilhelm von Pfalz-Neuburg , the Elector Palatinate and Duke of Jülich-Berg. He is wearing full armor with electoral hat, order chain and marshal's baton, sitting in a straight posture on the trotting horse. The base of the statue features gilded bronze palm branches and laurel wreaths. It is fenced in.
Johann Wilhelm who was born April 19 1658 and belonged to the Palatinate line of the House of Wittelsbach. The last Habsburg emperors Joseph I and Karl VI. were his nephews as sons of his sister Eleonore Magdalene von Pfalz-Neuburg . Two other sisters were the queens of Spain and Portugal.
On September 2, 1690, he succeeded his father as elector, after the latter had given him reign over the Jülich-Bergische land complex a decade earlier.
