It's a sunny day; Cardiff is alive with the usual business of people who are all heading different…read moredirections with different agendas and different appearances. In among all of this bustling madness you can find a place to sit away from the main pedestrian traffic, street sellers and charity collectors. This is a place to let the city pass you by for a while. I often come here to sit and eat my lunch or just stop off and rest a while whilst enjoying a different setting away from the office. There are plenty of benches and although at times it can get quite crowded with city visitors seats can quickly become available again. I will sit here and complete a Sudoku, write some lyrics or poetry, check my emails on my phone or simply people watch. There's a walkway at either end with entrances and exits. Down 3 sides are cast iron railings separating you from the main pedestrian zones that surround both Cardiff's indoor market to one side, and Queen's arcade on another. The third side separates you from the walkway of Working Street and St John the Baptist church just beyond that. You will find an array of characters here that is for sure, but I have never been approached by anyone here for anything other than a light for their cigarette. For this reason, to me, this is an island in the sea of city I spend so much time in.

This is a little haven in the centre of Cardiff between The Hayes and Cardiff Castle that is frequented by people with their packed lunch having a break on a bench. The St John The Baptist Cemetery Gardens are a fenced area that will allow you to look at the comings and going of The Cardiff Market and an entrance to St. David's 2, if it's a pleasant day then you can find yourself sitting in an area that is at once part of and shut off from the city centre, somewhere to sit for half an hour with a good book before venturing into the melee of a Cardiff shopping experience.

I walked past this many times before I knew what it was so, as usual, I did some reading!…read moreCaptain Scott's expedition to the Antarctic set out from Roath Dock in 1910 aboard the ship Terra Nova. Cardiff was chosen as the departure point owing to the huge contribution of the city to the expedition's financing. This relationship was also responsible for the elegant Scott Memorial at the south end of Roath Park Lake. The lake was emptied in 1914 so that foundations for the tower could be built. It was completed in 1915 and in 1918 it was officially presented to the Cardiff. The plaque on the promenade side of the Memorial reads: To the memory of Captain R. F. Scott C.V.O. D.S.O. , R.N. and his faithful companions Captain L. E. G. Oates, Lieut. H. R. Bowers R.I.M., Dr. E. A. Wilson and Petty Officer Edgar Evans R.N. who sailed in the S.S. Terra Nova from the Port of Cardiff June 15th 1910, to locate the South Pole; and, in pursuit of that great and successful scientific task, laid down their lives in the Antarctic Regions. March 1912. Britons all, and very gallant gentlemen. Erected and presented to the City of Cardiff by F. C. Bowring Esq., J.P. 1915.

It might seem odd reviewing a cemetery, but this one linking the Cathays and Heath areas of Cardiff…read moreis such a tranquil green space that it deserves it. It's one of Britain's biggest and most impressive cemeteries, covering almost 35 hectares, with thousands of memorials dating from 1859 onwards, including some well-known historical Cardiff characters. Granted, not everyone wants to hang out in a cemetery - but in fact lots of people do visit this one, whether it's to do research, follow the self-guided heritage trail, or just to enjoy the peace and quiet. There's loads of wildlife here, too, as there are lots of mature and exotic trees and other landscaping features that attract birds, animals, fungi and flowers. If it doesn't creep you out, it can also be interesting reading some of the old grave stones, which contain so much of the city's history - and to see the listed buildings within the site, including the chapels, gateway and forecourt walls. The main entrance to the cemetery is on Fairoak Road, but you can also get in on Allensbank Road and Lake Road West.

This cemetery is huge and stunningly beautiful, and it's so calm and peaceful that you almost forget about all the busy roads that run around it. There are some really old and interesting grave stones and buildings to look at, as well as beautiful trees and flowers, and, of course, plenty of birds and squirrels. Not necessarily somewhere you'll go for a family picnic, but great if you want an interesting walk, or somewhere to enjoy nature that's not as busy as Roath Park. If you follow the paths around, it can take you hours to get from one entrance to the other if you want it to; it's so big that you can just wander for as long as you want to without going round and round in the same circles. It might be an idea to check what time the gates close if you're going for an evening stroll, as I for one don't fancy the idea of getting locked in a cemetery overnight.
