I paid about $400 for what was supposed to be a very basic tax return, nothing complicated or unusual. Unfortunately the experience didn't really justify the price. After my appointment I still had to go online and file part of my state tax information myself, which was surprising since that's something I assumed would be handled as part of the service. If I'm paying that much for a simple return, I expect the whole process to be taken care of or at least clearly explained ahead of time. This place was recommended to me, but honestly I'm not sure why. The service wasn't terrible, but for the cost and the amount I still had to do on my own, it didn't feel worth it. I am a tipped service industry person who was recommended to Joanna because of the tax breaks offered for tipped employees. Ended up with the same exact return H&R Block offered when I did my taxes myself. I had an appointment on a Monday and got a voicemail on Friday canceling my appointment and telling me to call back and reschedule. When I called on Monday they said they hadn't heard from me and canceled my appointment. Joanna still did my taxes through email but my return was the exact same as when I did it myself through HR Block. When I questioned this she ignored all of my emails and I still can't get ahold of her. She still hasn't responded to my most recent email. What an enormous waste of time and $200. Just finished my 2022 taxes with Emily. I have been going to Emily for my taxes for over 10 years now and I do NOT go anywhere else. This year and last year were obviously done remotely, but we still were able to chat over the phone and discuss the amounts I will be getting back from the federal and state. They also help with Food and Service industry because of the tip-outs you pay for these industries. Emily also helps me because I am an undergrad student with tuition and school expenses. Jocelyn needs to be retrained on proper customer service. I called to ask why there was an $180 charge on my account if I decided to not file with them. The receptionist Jocelyn answered extremely rudely stating that it's a charge to prepare them, regardless if I do not file with them. I explained that I went through a different tax company and they are charging me less and the return is higher. See, I have been coming here for years. Her rude deliverance and lack of understanding is the reason I will not be using their services anymore. I have been recommending this company to friends and family and I will no longer do that. Customer retention is not in Jocelyns vocabulary. Simply stating "perhaps there might have been something missed, let's make it right, or let's figure out why your return is higher with a different tax company" would have gone a long way. No, let me just take the $180 out of your account for preparing something that I could have done myself on Turbo Tax for FREE with website self guidance. I choose to pay a little extra every time to this company because I know the tax accountants are good at what they do . However, the ball was dropped somewhere along the way. Lesson learned. I used to get my taxes done by a family member but always felt like I was never getting enough back. I decided to try out a legitimate tax firm last year (2019) and booked an appointment at this location. Being that this was my first time going on my own, I wasn't sure about all the paperwork I needed to have prepared to take with me. I called in about 2 weeks before my appointment and spoke to the front desk receptionist Jocelyn and she helped me tremendously. Very patient with my confusion and explained step by step about all the documents needed. Two days before my appointment I emailed them about a question I had and they got back to me in a timely manner. I got there 15 mins early and just went over my paperwork with Jocelyn just to double check everything needed was there. She was very kind and took the time to assure me everything looked great. Joanna did my taxes and went into detail about how my paperwork looks and helped me adjust a mistake I was making with my previous tax years. I felt relieved and confident that I had everything finally corrected. I was very happy with the outcome! I returned this year again (2020) and with COVID-19 things had to be done over the phone and emails, nevertheless I still received great customer service and got back even more this year since I made those adjustments! Been coming here for a couple years now but my most recent experience has left me with no reason to return next year. First off, their receptionist is a complete witch and speaks to everyone in a condescending tone. She has ZERO customer service skills and doesn't know how to speak to paying customers. I made the mistake of forgetting medical information during my visit. When I sent them the document that was needed, they sent me an updated copy of my tax return. THEY SENT ME THE WRONG INFORMATION AND COMPROMISED SOMEBODY'S SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER. UNPROFESSIONAL. This is a long review, so I'll start at the end...This review is intended to provide the rest of you folks who are looking to use this business, some advice from my experience. MAKE SURE you get some sort of confirmation of your appointment from this office. They have KNOWN ISSUES with their booking system which can screw you over, and they can't offer a solution or fix for their mistakes. But really, better yet - do yourself a favor and just go to a different preparation office who keep better records and who get it right the first time. Check out similar 1 star reviews below. It's a somewhat consistent pattern - I'm not just one guy with a chip on my shoulder. If you care to read my reasons, my story is below. Disorganized and unprofessional. I had my taxes prepared last year (2017) with Emeliy. She was friendly and helpful, so immediately after finishing up with her before leaving, I went up to the front desk and booked for this year (2018 tax year). A year later the day comes. I drive an hour and a half out here with my documents including last year's taxes (which has this year's appointment written on the folder), I go to check in, and whoops - no record of my appointment! They don't send confirmation emails, nor provide a receipt when booking in person. Not only that, but now they're fully booked. Even better, the woman at the desk stated "sorry, this has been happening, which is why we now take deposits for appointments" Fantastic - so a KNOWN ISSUE that they've been experiencing screws me over, and cannot be amended despite my due diligence of booking a full year in advance. It's my fault apparently, that they don't have proper confirmation and follow up systems which look out for their clients. My best guess is that I booked before they had these known issues, then they started requiring deposits once the issues came to surface. Next they probably chose to book over appointments who were booked before the deposit requirement with now deposited appointments, because, well, it's guaranteed money. Me without a deposit, even though I booked a year ahead, am a liability to them. And so what if I as a non guaranteed appointment gets screwed? They have someone right behind me who fulfilled their new requirement for a deposit. They got that person's money already, and they no longer have to worry about a guy who hasn't given them money yet. Needless to say I'm over this tax preparation office and likely won't ever return. They won't care because they'll be up to their necks in other people's money who are booking with them, and will have no issue filling the loss of my business. I just wish that they had better practices, systems, and organization so we as clients don't waste our valuable time just to get hosed by them. read more

There is only one reason, why I will never go back to this place again and that is because they hired the rudest and most unprofessional receptionist. Jocelyn has no customer service skills and will not work with any customer who does not make their appointment on time or have all the necessary paperwork. Due to the pandemic, I was not able to get my W2, prior to my appointment, from my previous employer because they were closed. I was able to make arrangements the day of my appointment, however, I was going to be about 30 min late. She basically told me, "too bad" and advised me to go on their website, make another appointment (with no openings until the following month) and pay another $50. I asked her if I could at least keep my appointment which was going to be within my time block and she said "we'll see" and as soon as we got off the phone, I received an email that she had cancelled my appointment. The lack of understanding and compassion from her was truly disappointing, especially during these times. She speaks to you like you're child and is condescending with her words. Later that day, I called back at my appointment time and asked to speak to another staff member and was hung up on. I have never been treated like that by any business in my entire life. This place took my money and there was never an attempt to make things right. I landed up taking me and my husband's business elsewhere and have told numerous friends and family not to go here. WORDS OF ADVISE: Don't go to this place unless you want to be treated like trash by their trash receptionist, Jocelyn. I go in between my feeling every year with these guys. Every year I swear I'm never going back because of the issues that always arise. I fax my papers to them one year and call to endure they came through and get told yes and to allow 2 weeks for them to get my taxes down. Two and a half weeks go by and I call and they say they never received my fax even though I called immediately after I sent it and was told they did! The next year they receive everything and get my taxes done in a week. Everything is submitted to the IRS at end of February. Come end of April I have no tax refund. I call the office and ask what's up and they tell me to call the IRS because this issue is with them. I call the IRS and find out that these people never sent in one of my forms and the IRS had contacted them about it and that's why there was a hold on my tax refund. Call the office again and tell them all of this. I didn't receive my refund until end of June that year because of all of that bs. Last year I fax everything again, call and am told it goes through. A week goes by and I call for an update and they tell me one of my papers wasn't faxed to them even though when I called I asked if all 5 came through and was told yes. So I refax the one missing and call and they say it came through. Another week goes by and I call for an update and am told that they never received the missing paper or misplaced it and to fax again! No one ever calls when something is missing. They just wait for you to assume its time to check in and make sure they're doing their job! So frustrating when I've been using them for 5 years now. Why do I keep going back and putting myself through this, you may ask? Because at the end of the day, I have ALWAYS owed taxes as a server/bartender. The most I've ever received back was $60. Since i started going here, I receive a lot back every year. They stress me out so bad and theyre shitty to their clients BUT they get me back money so here I am returning again this year. They are the only people who actually take in account of wtf a tipout is and how much of my money I have to give to other employees every night. Been going to James for approximately 20 years. I've NEVER had any problems with scheduling, communication, or accuracy. I've gotten a lot of sound solid advice from James regarding how I should handle my withholdings and such. I've always been greeted politely, professionally, and warmly by James and office staff. I don't know what the hell these one star people are talking about. Most likely self involved, immature babies who didn't get what they wanted and took it out on a business. I have worked with James Henry Inc. in 2015 and 2016. The first time went reasonably well, although they mailed my return rather than direct deposit like I requested. However in 2016 the wheels fell off. They managed to get my physical address wrong, not reply to emails, not call back and when I finally got hold of them they informed me - almost a month after filing - that there was an issue and I need to contact the IRS directly (they gave me a number that was NOT IN SERVICE - something a Tax firm should probably have on file). Non-communicative.We received no help from Mr. when the Franchise Tax Board sent us a letter informing us that we owed money. We were asked by Mr. Henry's office to bring the letter to his office. I've been going to Emily for over 10 years. I called quite late this year to get an appointment. Spoke to Joslyn and was super rude and not helpful. She was actually super condescending. Emily does amazing taxes and has catered to people in the service industry, but now they have grown and are too big for the people that made them big in the first place. I hate it when that happens.
