Its red brick massing, Greenfield Dolomite veneer and Corinthian-columned portico give it a highly formal and classical presence, while the later cupola and clock (added in 1867) complete the period look. Walking around it on an afternoon weekday with red, white and blue holiday bunting draped across the facade only heightens the courthouse's patriotic feel, and the best view is really from across the street where the portico and tower stand unobstructed. Ross County was founded in 1798 and named for James Ross, a Federalist US Senator from Pennsylvania. Chillicothe, the county seat, was founded in 1796 and takes its name from the Shawnee word "Chala-ka-tha", meaning "principal town," a term used for the main settlement of one division of the Shawnee people. The courthouse's prominent position in the center of town reflects Chillicothe's early importance as both the first and third capital of Ohio, and even today the building carries that sense of historical weight as you circle its grounds. The marker stands in front of the Ross County Courthouse and while this building is new, it's in the spot where the courthouse used to be. The marker reads, "Ross County's first courthouse was Ohio's first statehouse. The courthouse was erected on the Public Square in 1801. Thomas Worthington, one of the building's superintendents, laid out the foundation. Chillicothe was the last capital of the Northwest Territory, and the final session of the territorial legislature met in the courthouse in 1801. Ohio's first constitution was written here in 1802. On March 1, 1803, Ohio's first General Assembly convened in the building, making it the statehouse. During a time of strained relations between Native Americans and settlers in Ohio, the great Shawnee leader Tecumseh delivered a speech here in 1807 to reassure citizens that the Indians would remain peaceful. The courthouse served as the statehouse from 1803 to 1810 and from 1812 to 1816. The building was razed in 1852 to make way for the present courthouse." Behind that, the structure steps upward to a peak topped with a square cupola and clock, giving the courthouse a balanced but authoritative profile. The mansion is nicely done with some legit family heirlooms and lots of period correct furnishings. The museum is small but nice. Not busy on Sunday afternoon and very fair price. My only complaint is the length of tour, almost 2 full hours, its too much. Mt. Vernon, Monticello, other historical homes 'more important' are half that.
