The Ross County Courthouse in Chillicothe is a mid 19th century Green Revival landmark completed in…read more1859, designed by architects Edward Collins and Charles Autenrieth of Philadelphia. Its red brick massing, Greenfield Dolomite veneer and Corinthian-columned portico give it a highly formal and classical presence, while the later cupola and clock (added in 1867) complete the period look. Walking around it on an afternoon weekday with red, white and blue holiday bunting draped across the facade only heightens the courthouse's patriotic feel, and the best view is really from across the street where the portico and tower stand unobstructed. Ross County was founded in 1798 and named for James Ross, a Federalist US Senator from Pennsylvania. Chillicothe, the county seat, was founded in 1796 and takes its name from the Shawnee word "Chala-ka-tha", meaning "principal town," a term used for the main settlement of one division of the Shawnee people. The courthouse's prominent position in the center of town reflects Chillicothe's early importance as both the first and third capital of Ohio, and even today the building carries that sense of historical weight as you circle its grounds. Most folks might not know that Columbus wasn't always the capital of Ohio and this marker is here…read moreto remind you that Chillicothe was the first state capital. The marker stands in front of the Ross County Courthouse and while this building is new, it's in the spot where the courthouse used to be. The marker reads, "Ross County's first courthouse was Ohio's first statehouse. The courthouse was erected on the Public Square in 1801. Thomas Worthington, one of the building's superintendents, laid out the foundation. Chillicothe was the last capital of the Northwest Territory, and the final session of the territorial legislature met in the courthouse in 1801. Ohio's first constitution was written here in 1802. On March 1, 1803, Ohio's first General Assembly convened in the building, making it the statehouse. During a time of strained relations between Native Americans and settlers in Ohio, the great Shawnee leader Tecumseh delivered a speech here in 1807 to reassure citizens that the Indians would remain peaceful. The courthouse served as the statehouse from 1803 to 1810 and from 1812 to 1816. The building was razed in 1852 to make way for the present courthouse." It is marker number 3-71 and it was erected in 2000 by the Ohio Bicentennial Commission, The Longaberger Company, Chillicothe & Ross County 2003 Commission of Chillicothe's Bicentennial Commission, Ross County Historical Society, and The Ohio Historical Society. On a bright Friday afternoon, the Jackson County Courthouse in Ohio really does project a certain…read morejudicial presence. The building was completed in 1868 in a Greek Revival design by architect R.C. Saunders, using red brick and concrete. The most striking feature is the large south-facing portico, framed by square brick pillars at the corners and two central columns rising to a flat roof. Behind that, the structure steps upward to a peak topped with a square cupola and clock, giving the courthouse a balanced but authoritative profile. Jackson County itself was formed in 1816 and named for Andrew Jackson, the War of 1812 figure who later became the President of the United States. Walking around the courthouse in the bright sun, the brick columns and portico amplify that sense of civic weight and even with later mid-20th-century repairs after a fire, the building still reads as a classic small-town expression of judicial power. How has this not been reviewed already? It's an amazing museum…read more I came often as a kid since my grandparents lived nearby. It was just in one house then, a pretty typical small-town historical society with stuff crammed in display cases, and filling every room down to the basement. Cool for a history buff, but nothing spectacular. We went yesterday as part of the Ohio Statehood Day events, and, wow. They have added the house next door, and an addition in the back, and it is now an incredible museum. The volunteers were very friendly and knowledgeable. The displays are beautiful and informative. All aspects of local history are covered. There are train sets, dolls, military artifacts, cars, covered wagons... All sorts of things, nicely restored. During our visit there was old-time music, a special display of early American weapons, costumed interpreters, etc. They said they decorate for Christmas with historical toys and decorations. We had a great visit and stayed till closing time. I would set aside at least an hour, better 2 or 3. This is a local gem, and worth a detour from anywhere in the state.

I live in Columbus, Ohio but my family has used Boyer Funeral Home for my mother and father…read morein-law's funeral services. Being from a large city, one would expect the big city funeral homes to offer a more comfortable environment, greater services, nicer facilities, etc. than could be offered from a small town funeral home. This is not the case. Boyer offers a first class facility and first class attention to detail. When my sister passed away 5 years ago we used a local funeral home in Westerville, Ohio and I was very disappointed in the treatment and quality of service my family received in comparison to Boyer Funeral Home in Waverly, Ohio. I only wish I could have had Boyer in Westerville for that service. I would have been way more comfortable having these folks handle her arrangements instead of having regrets over a second class environment. Dave Boyer and Greg Boyer have been so amazingly attentive to the needs of our family during a very difficult time. The chapel is warm and inviting. The people are friendly and helpful. They actually care about you, and not just their bottom line. Thank you to Boyer Funeral Home for keeping your mission focused on what is important to families during a time of extreme sadness and pain.
