One of the best India in boro, portions a little small ( especially bread) , but taste makes up for it .

Has been opened since 1987 but I have no idea how they have managed this…read more Closed on Sundays but it's a shame it's not the other six days of the week. As a known curry lover I have had many people over the years tell me about how fantastic The Indian Cottage is. It's amazing how much this restaurant is loved by people for many miles around. What is even more amazing is that many of their customers actually think this is the best curry house in the world as if or when they try somewhere else they often say the food was nice but nothing like the Indian cottage. Amazing and amusing to me because as a well traveled curry lover my opinion on this restaurant couldn't be more of the opposite opinion. Let me explain why my opinion is so different. Imagine being brought up in the middle of the moors in a very small isolated town which has only one Indian restaurant for miles; it's obvious that if this was the case, over the years most users would get to like this only Indian even if the food tasted like no other because they have not tried no other. What I am trying to say is that many of the locals have got accustomed to the taste of the Indian cottage to a point that when they try somewhere else they think the new place they have tried is absolutely rubbish as it does not taste anything like their Indian cottage and this is partly correct as nowhere else could taste like the Indian cottage believe you me! I'm glad to say that Guisbrough now has a second Indian restaurant called Shurovi and good look to them as they now have a challenge on trying to show people that Indian food does not and should not taste like the Indian cottage. Good luck to them. Going back to the Indian cottage; I once ordered popadoms and pickles and very soon after the waiter had put the pickles onto my table he came back over and removed them. I asked him why as I had just started to use them and his explained that another table needed them. I asked why does he not give the other table another pickle tray and he replied with he did not want to have to clean more than one tray at the end of the night. I was not having this at all and protested but the waiter said I was being awkward and just told me to put what I wanted out of the pickle tray onto my side plate as he was absolutely adamant that he was not going to have more than one tray on the go. On another visit, I took my better half for her 1st time as she really wanted to go and as like me she is also a curry lover and even thou I tried to change her mind she insisted and said she was prepared and knew the risk. She had heard so much about this restaurant and just could not believe it so wanted a first hand experience. I ordered a vegetable dish and my better half asked why, I replied with I know what I'm getting with this and said it would be like a pile of dog sick but with lots of very highly concentrated food colourings in but at least its only vegetables, she ordered chicken tikka masala. Anyway when the food came I got exactly what I said I would get and it was just a pile of frozen vegetable slop. It was about 15 minutes later when her dish came out of the kitchen and it was like the waiter was carrying a dish of 10,000,000 watts of floodlights as it was glowing so bright it lit the full area up. Bloody hell it looked nuclear! After she put her sun glasses on she tasted it which immediately triggered off a coughing fit because the taste was even stronger than it looked. This place must have something big going on with a food colouring supplier as I reckon 50% of what goes in their curries must be just coloring. Thank God she has never suggested going back. This place is worse than RUBBISH. You would have to be either sick, silly or just have some hellish sense of humor to eat here. I have given 1-star for managing to stay open for so long. For the food i give no stars. Now if I have offended anyone from the Guisborough area then I apologies as my intention is to only give a true review and that is what I have done but away if you really think this curry house is good then it must be time for you to have a re-think as what they serve is just coloured slop stew. Below is another review I came across from another review site that I could not resist showing you; Anyone who thinks the Indian Cottage serves good food must never have left the confines of Guisborough and can only have previously have dined out when they had school dinners! It's the same sauce for all dishes but it comes in many colours. I seriously doubt if anyone from the Indian sub-continent would even recognize it as food originating from their country. It's the same with the kebabs. They are horrendous. Might just as well flush them straight down the loo and miss out the middle man. How can they get it so wrong?

Arrived with 3 friends , very much wanting to enjoy curry and a beer. What a disappoinment…read more Service was rushed , food appeared very quickly and was not of a good standard on this night .
