Enjoyed our meal, but did not find it to be authentic Korean food. Nice atmosphere and service. Would go back and try something different.

I traveled from Chicago, USA to Valencia, Spain to attend a friend's wedding. Since my friend and her darling new husband hadn't had Korean food, it was essential that we go out for Korean during my visit. Essential. We ordered kalbi, bibimbap, mondu guk, chapchae, kimchi, and bindaeduk. One caveat is that I had just been in Seoul, South Korea the month prior, and Chicago, my home city, boasts one of the largest Korean populations in the United States. Therefore, I'm used to eating excellent and authentic Korean food. Thus, my standards are pretty high, and this is why I can only rate Jalasán as moderately good. In truth, the food was basically what I expected of Korean food in Valencia, Spain, a place that has a rather small Korean Spanish population. The mondu in the mondu guk, for example, were round rather than half-moon shape, and the broth tasted more like chicken noodle soup than mondu guk. Part of the reason for this somewhat bland taste is that there was no sign of black pepper in the broth. It was a good soup, but it didn't taste like mondu guk. Also, you might have noticed that we ordered kimchi. The fact that banchan, side dishes that always include kimchi, were not automatically served was a bit heartbreaking. Banchan is an important part of any Korean dining experience. (There are Korean restaurants that don't serve banchan in the States too. I avoid them.) Finally, it didn't seem that Jalasán offered soju, makgeolli, or Korean beer. I searched for a Korean market on Yelp, and I found one about 45 minutes away. According to the photos in the Yelp review, this market sells soju. Therefore, it exists in Spain. It sure would be nice to have soju and banchan with our main dishes. Re-reading what I wrote above makes it seem like I was unhappy. I wasn't. I was thrilled to have Korean food in Spain! However, if you're really looking for an authentic experience, Jalasán might fall a little short. This being said, it's a really nice restaurant with Korean decorations and a friendly staff who even speak English. Think about this: I went to a Korean restaurant in Spain, and my server spoke to me in English. #globalization #ThankYou #hospitality I wish I could get on a plane and fly to Valencia right now. This restaurant was recommended to me several times, especially by the people who know that I love Asian food. This restaurant is run by a Korean family. The daughter served us well , she was very friendly and helpful, always smiling. We asked her opinion about the dishes and she told us which ones are the most typical of Korea. When we asked for the raw meat dish , she told us honest and a little embarrassed that she had never tasted that dish. She did not like raw meat ;) She told us that the calamari was very spicy , this was meant as a warning , but we saw it as a challenge ... mmmm delicious spicy dish! My other favourite was the beef that you had to roll in lettuce to eat it, this meat had a delicious BBQ flavour and was cooked perfectly. Apparently the Koreans don't have many desserts , because there were only two desserts on the menu from Korea, the rest were international. We chose the two Korean desserts of course! This is one of a few and the best Korean restaurants in Valencia. It's a bit upscale given where it's situated and the interior. Even so, it's affordable and casual. The interior is also clean and well-maintained. The place is very accessible either by walk or public transportation. The neighborhood where it's located is very nice and a bit posh. There are many good restaurants an bars around. The dishes that I had were delicious and quite authentic. However, the service was very slow. The waiter at first seemed to forget to take our order. We waited for more than half an hour for our first dish. We (2 people) went to this restaurant for dinner. We ordered 4 dishes. Since the service was very slow, they gave us a small dish of Daikon kimchi on the house. It was very very good. I always like Daikon kimchi more than the typical kind of kimchi. The typical kimchi is the kind with Chinese cabbage (or winter cabbage), but there are many other kinds with different vegetables too such as with garlic chives. At this restaurant, they serve different kinds of kimchi other than the typical one. Next time I want to go back and try some more! The four dishes that we ordered were Samkiopsal Bokum (stir fry bacon with vegetables), Yuk Gue Chang (Spicy beef stew with vegetables served with rice), Duebi Galbi Gu-I (Korean style barbecued pork ribs), and Yuk Whe (raw beef with Korean sauce). There were two dishes that we liked most which were Samkiopsal Bokum and Yuk Whe. So yummy!!! Personally I could go back for these two dishes everyday! The barbecue one was so so. I don't recommend this dish though. For dessert, we ordered Sachung Gua (ginger, cinnamon and brown sugar drink). This also came on the house. Yay! I had this kind of drink before many times in other Korean restaurants (not in Valencia) which is normally served after meal. It's really good and actually perfect for digesting. I give 4 stars because the food was yummy. But with the service maybe 3.5!! I hope they improve their service!!! Note that they have Menu del Dia. I want to try this next time! read more

* 3.5 Stars * My boyfriend and I needed a late night meal and decided to try Jalasan. We didn't want to venture into the city center because there was a soccer game that night and we wanted to avoid the crowds. Jalasan is Korean-owned and the decor was nice and clean, borderline fancy with the white tableclothes. Our server (we later found out he was Japanese) was polite, and we ordered a bunch of dishes to try. I was actually pretty excited to try this fusion cuisine. We ordered the galbi, spicy calamari, rice and kimchi (which are considered tapas and are separate dishes from the meal), fried dumplings, and a stir-fried pork belly dish that we ordered later on because our first dishes were not enough. The spicy calamari was good, and in a watery sauce, not like a thick, paste-y sauce you would see in the states or in Korea. The galbi was the best part of the meal: it was thinner than normal but very juicy and tender. And you can't go wrong with the fried dumplings. The pork belly dish was actually a bit odd to me. I think it was the sauce that it was sauteed with, but I wasn't too keen on the flavor. This was mostly consumed by my still-hungry boyfriend. As you can imagine, the portions weren't as big as we would have liked. I'm rounding up on stars though because we had a good experience there, and the Korean owner spoke to us briefly on our way out and expressed his happiness to see another Korean :) read more

If you are looking for authentic Korean food, this is not the place for you. They charge 4 euros for kimchi. There is NO banchan. If you don't understand why this is important then most likely you'll enjoy your meal. The yukkaejang broth tasted like gochujang paste + boiling water. It had two tiny chunks of beef. It also came with COLD rice. The mandu was the frozen kind you get from H-Mart or Asshi. If you've ever eaten Korean food in Korea or LA (or Oakland, or New York, or Atlanta ...) you will be severely disappointed. Upside: nice atmosphere, clean, friendly service. read more
