While my dreams of becoming a rock star have never been realized and likely will never be, I still…read morehave a desire to learn to make music. In my dreams, I always fancied the bass guitar to be my instrument of choice. Four strings can't be too bad, after all. Through the years I had gathered a short list of guitar instructors, but it wasn't until one day 2016 that I happened to catch Sean Cleland perform at Kahala Mall. There was just something about this guy that seemed to resonate with me. He had a clean, fresh sound with a bit of a nostalgic vibe. I recorded a 15-second snippet, posted it on my Instagram feed and that was that, or so I thought. Months later, I had a conversation with my dentist, who had previously referred me to his guitar instructor, and thought it was time I get serious about pursuing this dream. What's the first thing you do when researching a business? Correct answer and brownie points if you answered "Yelp it," of course! And it was here that I saw Sean's reviews. I'm like, hmm that's the same guy I saw performing at Kahala Mall. Must be a sign, right? I've never shared this with Sean, but he reminds me of a upcycled version of John Lennon, a young man with an old soul and the heart of a true rocker with some serious skills and artistry. Sean's teaching style is riddled with patience and humor. His keen observation skills and background in philosophy give him the advantage of tailoring and customizing his teaching methods to best suit his students. He always has encouraging words to share and is always humble which, in my book, are very important qualities in a teacher. Learning something new is a process and even if I am still learning about everything from music theory to a crash course in Christmas songs for last minute "gigs" at senior living residences, I know I'm in the best care with Sean. I've never had the opportunity to see Sean perform a live set, but with his new release debut just around the bend, I'm looking forward to catching up!

He is very a fluid guitarist and has great feel, but he is also technically knowledgeable and can easily explain the theory behind the music. He will be able to share those skills he has amassed with you and help you to grow, whatever your skill level is. His studio space is very comfortable and bright, which always put me in a cheery mood. If you have a question and he doesn't know the answer (rare), he can readily pull it up on the computer, which is perfect if you want to analyze a specific guitar riff on some obscure song in the middle of the lesson. Thanks Sean!

I'm not happy about the graduation ceremony dress code as I'm sure a lot of students feel that they…read moreshould get to be themselves on the last day that defines their end to childhood and entry into young-adulthood marked by ceremony and walking to accept their diploma is a heavy and weighty feeling. To finally experience a relief of the culmination of their hard work- matching everyone and being so strict about it just defines the Hawaii Public School's under-funding and in my opinion, over exertion of "power." They don't need a strict dress code of matching colors of white and black only! They'll look like a class of waiters or servers. Please fix this. School colors would be okay, or just have a simple dress code of "professional!" Why is that not okay? Side Note: Hawaii schools look like prisons. I implore people to do more for Hawaii Public Schools; redesign, fix, and change is necessary. Take your cues from the schools like Issaqua High School, in Issaquah, WA., Eastlake HS, etc. Not having DECA, choices for lunch, and zero snack machines is crazy!! You can make so much money for the school through programs set up by Coca Cola and Pepsi and there are so many ways to make the school better- plus the office people. Please fix their terrible attitudes and sickening power issues they possess. I've never hated going to a high school office more than yours. Growing up the ladies and gentlemen in the office of a High School were always helpful, caring, inviting, & friendly. It's outrageous to experience this front desk team of mean people. I don't know if it's designed that way but it's wrong on so many levels. I shall digress, back to the main point: Their cap and gown and sashes for upstanding presidents list & 4.0 (4.25 this year) students should be your focus (Cum Laude/Summa Cum Laude, etc.,), are you even doing that? How do parents get so little information from the school? It's about time you people stepped up to the plate and stopped your worry about what's under their cap & gowns and focus on your real problems. I've seen the way some kids are dressed for school in items that leave nothing to the imagination. So why, on this day, are you acting like you have it all together? For show? That's kinda about right, unfortunately. And you put it on the families or the kids can't walk. If other parents watched the video by Mr. Taraoka, he must've threatened detention 25 times or more or telling seniors, "you won't be able to walk!" Totalitarian is the definition I'd use. It's distressing to say the least. The class of 2023 is kind, generous, smart, funny, and skilled. Treat them like the young adults they are and remove the dress code for graduation to "professional," minus the color matching. It's a simple thing, really, and would make the most sense. Mahalo Nui Loa!

I attended 'Napono' for the first time today for their Summer Extravaganza - and I was extremely impressed. This a well oiled program and the aunties and uncles know what they are doing and saying from start to finish! There is a bulletin board you initially read to your Keiki. You grab some books and have reading/snack time. Then you flow into aloha songs, with activities, followed by a variety of things to see and do! We got to make stamps of fish and seashells, touch lizards/chameleons, play on colored water, spray sheets with colored water, and yup even got some free shaved ice! They had snacks available for hungry tots (pretzels and water). And of course there was play doh, and more! The kids were excited to be here! All aunties are extremely nice and very helpful for any and all questions you have! We had our goodbye songs and we were gifted subway sandwiches! Best part - all of this is free! And you have aunties helping you park or getting out of the parking lot. What a fantastic way to spend a couple of hours with folks you know! Looking forward to the school year to see what it brings in!
