My piano teacher Hye Seon has years of experience orchestrating off-broadway Jazz musicals in New York. Second time Yelp took my review down…read more.. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Made a Yelp account just to write this review! If I could give six stars, I would! I had decided to take piano lessons a little over a year ago. My first teacher started me off learning 15-second melodies spontaneously written on napkins. After a week, he had me playing three-note chords in one hand to accompany a guitarist he was simultaneously teaching. In summary, this was a pretty horrible experience and I started Googling for a new teacher - one of the first places that popped up was Piano Lessons NYC. I spent my first month learning with an instructor no longer with the school, who seemed to be a natural educator and was extremely supportive. From day one, she had a standardized plan (with an actual curriculum) that worked wonders; I was playing with both hands together pretty quickly. Due to an inability to meet at the same location, I had to switch from her to Mayuko Yamashita, who founded and runs the school. Everything is so organized; we work off a few different books simultaneously. Lessons are once a week, and meaningful homework assignments are given (at present, this typically consists of a brief piece or two, and various hand exercises). No didactic choice Mayuko makes is without a clear purpose. She scans through books deliberately picking specific pieces/exercises like tesserae in a mosaic, and everything is selected to advance some specific technical component. Moreover, she's totally open to whatever pieces you want to learn. I tend to strive for the very challenging Romantic Period stuff (one day!) - Mayuko will honestly let you know what you can and cannot presently begin learning, and what it will take to get there. If a piece is within reach, we go for it and learn it extremely thoroughly. During lessons, no nuances escape her. She'll point out so many seemingly little things - wrist and elbow motions, which part of the fingertip is contacting the keys, downward velocity, etc. - that just add up to developing a highly efficient and graceful technical foundation. Any and all judgment is purely objective and sessions are totally free of pressure; when mess-ups happen, we laugh them off, figure out why they happened, and progress. Every few months, the school sends invitations to perform at recitals and attend concerts hosted by professional musicians, and these have been wonderful experiences (although I haven't performed!). Earlier this month, I listened to Mayuko play some beautiful contemporary classical pieces. It gives you a tremendous confidence boost and sense of pride when you see a supremely talented concert pianist in action and know it's your teacher! In conclusion, if you're serious about learning piano, then look no further. If you're on the fence, then I say go for it! To become proficient in any instrument isn't easy, but in my brief experience, two things have proven critical: (1) your will to work hard, and (2) an excellent teacher. Listen to your instructor, learn to enjoy the little triumphs along the way, and you'll cultivate a skill that will give you a lifetime of joy.

She creates special programs to suit the interests of the student but insists upon building core competencies such as reading music, scales, singing/comping, etc. Our friends' kids have Alexandra and love her as well. The students in the program are comfortable playing jazz, classical, pop, rock, etc. and aren't stuck in one genre. Treblemakers tailors the program to your kid's interests so you can request any song and they will work out appropriate arrangements. But don't worry - the teachers at Treblemakers all have been trained at the top music schools and have the chops to teach very difficult classical and jazz pieces as well. Most programs will not have the breadth that Treblemakers provides. (Kids can also learn a multiple instruments as well.) Suzan wrote her own method books that have great catchy tunes and they layer and layer until kids gain all the core skills including scales, chords, arpeggios, major/minor, etc. Then all of sudden the kids are really ready to play anything... Treblemakers is a family business with scheduling run by Anthony who also inspires the children, has a deep interest in the education of all students, and always makes sure the kids and parents are happy and reaching goals. We highly recommend Treblemakers and know that our kids will have the love of music and all the skills needed to enjoy playing music for the rest of their lives.

I cannot say enough good things about Chris as a guitar teacher!…read more I have been taking lessons with Chris for around 9ish months so far, with no previous guitar experience. Though I do have experience in music from taking years of voice lessons, I have never been able to stick with an instrument, nor have I been able to read music or understand music theory. This is due to my frustration I get because - let's face it - music can be incredibly overwhelming if you're just starting out. When I started taking lessons with Chris, he understood my interests and what direction I wanted to go in with my guitar journey. From the very beginning I always felt very relaxed and never embarrassed playing with Chris, and he was able to explain musicality to me in a way that I was able to understand. Every lesson, I left feeling more confident than the last, and I never leave without feeling extremely accomplished. Chris has a way of instilling his joy of guitar and love of music with his students, therefor making me excited to go home and practice (and practice...and practice...and practice). Chris teaches everything as well - parts of the guitar, music theory, songs, music history...he even taught me how to re-string my guitar today! He always has such a positive attitude in every lesson, and I never feel overwhelmed. He is patient and understands where each individual student is coming from - the variance of students that he teaches attests to that. I now have a repertoire of songs that I have learned to play, and will even be performing in public. I have always had a lifelong vision of becoming a musician because I have always loved music, and Chris has made that vision a reality. And the best part is; not only do you learn A LOT in his lessons, but they are always SO fun. I always look forward to going to my lessons. A+, top notch, the top in my book.
