Stunning Park, Deeply Disappointing Experience and Park Practices:…read more A park this beautiful shouldn't leave visitors feeling deceived and angry -- but after my first visit, I'll never invest another penny to return. The grounds are pristine, the scenery breathtaking, and it's the kind of place you'd gladly support -- I would have happily donated to help preserve it. But being blindsided with a $128 citation for parking in the visitor's lot, at the ranger station, before even reaching the park itself, left a lasting mark that no view could erase. We were short on time, but since it was her favorite birthday tradition -- and her two friends (myself included) had never seen the park she loved so much -- my friend offered to give us a quick drive-through using her season pass. We parked just outside the small brown ranger station at the main entrance -- before entering the park itself -- and hopped into her vehicle, which had the pass. We stayed only long enough to share a small cupcake and take in her favorite view. When I returned to my car minutes later, I found a $128.xx citation on my windshield. I was stunned! My car had never entered the park -- it sat at the ranger station where visitors commonly stop for information. When we explained the misunderstanding, the ranger repeated a script he seemed to know too well: "You don't have to pay the citation if you buy a season pass." When it was clear that wasn't an option, he moved to, "We also have a monthly pass," and finally landed on "daily." Why not start there? It felt rehearsed -- as if this situation happens often, relying on loosely interpreted rules to justify charges. We had deliberately parked outside to ensure we were abiding by the park's rules -- a choice made out of respect, not avoidance. Ironically, we could have driven through without a care and paid the same or less. It made me wonder if this is how the park maintains such immaculate grounds -- by penalizing good-intentioned visitors for honest mistakes, time and time again, until the script is second nature. For those unaware: the moment your tires touch the gravel -- even before reaching any usable part of the park -- it's considered "entry." There was no signage clarifying this, no grace for an honest misunderstanding, and no willingness to resolve it fairly. What could have been a memory of shared beauty became a lasting disappointment. Instead of creating lifelong visitors, this experience ensured that none of us will return. It breaks my heart that a place so beautiful left such an ugly impression.

Everyone at this facility is friendly, and I come here more for the sauna rather than the gym equipment. I park up in the sauna for 60-90 minutes with a book and my water, and get the peace and quiet I rarely get at home. The dry sauna is hot, clean, and well maintained. The locker room is pristine; I have never been in a cleaner one. The childcare workers are exceptionally friendly and caring, putting up with my toddler's "toddler" behavior and my infant's needs. I truly appreciate that I have peace of mind when dropping them off. My only qualm is the membership--Not the price, but the requirements. I have never experienced a gym that requires that you be married to get a certain rate, and find that a bit antiquated, but I am sure they have their reasons. I had to register as a single parent family in order to get the family rate simply because my partner and I have not signed a piece of paper. Other than that, highly recommend.

The scenery here has this wide-open, tranquil, almost cinematic quality to it -- rolling greenery, shimmering water, peaceful shorelines, endless skies, and the quiet movement of the Missouri River weaving its way through the landscape like a living ribbon cutting through the heart of America. There is something deeply calming about this place. For visitors unfamiliar with the area, the recreation area sits along Lewis and Clark Lake, which was created by the Gavins Point Dam on the Missouri River. The region is named after the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition, which traveled through this part of the country in the early 1800s while exploring the vast Louisiana Purchase territory. Standing near the water, it is honestly not difficult to imagine how enormous and untamed this landscape must have felt to early explorers centuries ago. My husband especially wanted to stop here because one of his hobbies is flying drones, and he absolutely loves capturing aerial footage of the Missouri River as it winds across different states. At this point, I think the Missouri River and my husband are in a long-term relationship and I am simply there as emotional support and snack distribution. And honestly, I understand why he loves it so much. The Missouri has such a distinct personality depending on where you encounter it. My husband and I have followed portions of the river through several states over the years including South Dakota, Missouri, Montana, and North Dakota, and we have even taken river excursions on it in other regions. Each stretch somehow feels slightly different while still carrying that same immense presence and quiet historical weight. But this particular area near Yankton felt especially serene. The water was beautiful, the surrounding scenery was lush and vibrant, and the peacefulness of the area made it very easy to lose track of time simply standing there taking it all in while my husband happily maneuvered his drone around like a man conducting an aerial symphony. It truly was one of those unexpectedly lovely stops that quietly stays with you afterward.

There are multiple entry points, but well paved roads, and signage to guide you. All the park officials we've ever ran into are friendly and helpful. Just to give full history: We enrolled our two sons. First Semi-Private Lesson (Trial): One of two lessons that had no issues. Second Semi-Private Lesson: We enrolled on the app. We had the confirmation email. We arrived on time. They didn't have us on the schedule for the day. They spent five minutes trying to figure it out. Our kids spent 20 minutes in the water. Third Semi-Private Lesson: There was a "Code Brown" so we needed to make up the class. Not there fault. Fourth Semi-Private Lesson: The second lesson that had no issues. Fifth Semi-Private Lesson (Make-Up): We scheduled on the app for the 9:15am-9:45am class on a Saturday. We received an email that this was our time to go in. We arrived at this time and sent our kids in. There was 5 minutes of confusion in the pool area where Our kids went from one teacher to another and then they were sent out at 9:30am. Apparently although we had confirmation that the class was at 9:15am, their system said 9am in some locations and 9:15am in others. Confused we tried to talk to the older receptionist/admin on duty. She was adamant that we were in the wrong and that we were being rude although she was raising her voice to us. I then showed her the confirmation email which resulted in her changing her tone. In all this confusion, they "graciously" let our kids go back in the pool for another 10 minutes. After which I asked for a printout of their remaining classes and to have them dropped from the program after with the younger receptionist/admin. She did explain that it was a fairly new system and that she could see the discrepancy. What left a real soar spot for me about this whole experience was that nobody apologized for this situation. I was obviously upset about what was happening. Not necessarily at them but about the situation and how they didn't seem to care to help resolve it. They cared more about explaining why it wasn't there fault and making us out to be the bad guys then trying to rectify the issues their system caused. A little customer service to address a poor situation goes along way.
