Energii Amager - The "torture" machine

Yes! I love to torture myself, or something in that direction…read more... The background story is actually that I don't like conventional fitness center, because of the smell of sweaty people, the amount of endless staring into equipment that you're not quite sure how to operate but afraid that you might do something wrong with it, and to trump it all - I hate the crowd, or let's say people, in general. So I'm more into loner sports like running. However, I heard about this place from Yelp, where Martin R gave tip about this new place that could basically give you all the benefits of the fitness center, without the endless staring part - because there are instructors that tell you what to do with that complicated machine. Energii is a form of pilates, done on reformer machine, it might be hard for some, and easy for some others, but I've experienced that my muscles are challenged in such way they've never been that I actually woke up the next day and found myself couldn't laugh about it - like literally - my stomach muscles hurt so much after. But that's only a good sign. The place in Amager is clean and bright. They don't have any other classes but Classic and Power (some other centers have hot yoga, heat it up TRX classes and the likes), but that's all I need (at least for newbie me who have yet to master the reformer machine). They don't have shower, but they do have changing room - which fortunately doesn't matter much for me since I live across the park from this place. The instructors were nice, although they could be tough (as they way they scrunched up their face when they saw me doing it wrong - ELBOW IN THE BODY, EVA!! - uhh yes, ma'am - but that's only because they don't want you to hurt yourself during the training process. The classes might seem short (1 hour only) and the price is quite high (800 kr a month for free training and a thousand something for clipcard) but with sessions that require instructors all the time, I think that's fair enough (it's not like fitness center where you're basically "let loose" to do what you want). You'll get supervised training all the time and you'll feel that your body benefits from it. No more excuses from now!

Great staff and facilities - but crowded, expensive and borderline scammy…read more If you read all the 4- and 5-star reviews on here who talk about the staff and facilities, they're right. The staff are awesome, though I've only ever worked with Shamir. He's patient and understanding, and he drives his classes hard (which is good). After class he'll sit and talk to people about their experiences and offer advice. I'm only giving it 3 stars because of the crowd, the pricing, and the cancellation policy. To be fair, I go to the Sunday afternoon class, but it's so crowded that you often touch the people next to you when you're doing a wide pose. It's nearly wall-to-wall people. Plus all the additional people make the room even hotter and more humid. I almost passed out last class and went through my entire 32oz water bottle. People were dropping out of the poses like flies. The costs are nuts. A drop-in class and towel/mat rental come to 275dkk... for an hour-long class. Maybe this is standard for hot yoga in Denmark, but it felt unreasonable to me. I signed up for the membership thinking it would be cheaper, per class. I see other reviews about a 14-day trial period, but I wasn't offered that. The once-per-week class is ~480 and I bought my own mat at Tiger. The mats they have there are expensive - I remember the towels they have running 400dkk but forget the mat purchase price. And lastly, the cancellation. I'm moving to another gym because work gives me a discount. There is a cancellation fee at HYC of 89dkk, AND you must pay for another month. I was not told this when I signed up for the membership, because I assumed they would be more customer-friendly. So it's almost the end of August, and I have to pay for all of September as well. I went back and asked for my membership to end at the end of August (since I didn't know if have to pay for an extra month), and the email reply was like "I'm sorry you were unaware of our cancellation policy." ...ARE you sorry? I feel like there's no technical reason for them to be unable to end my membership in August, right? I mean you just hit a key and it's done. They have it specifically built that you must wait a month. It's very frustrating. Either way, I suppose I'll ride out my month and keep sweating it out before I say goodbye.

Located down a long alleyway in Islands Brygge is the brand new fitness studio, YO STUDIOS. YO…read moreSTUDIOS officially launched at the end of January 2017 and so far, they offer a wide variety of fitness classes (yoga, barre, cardio and dance) that will get the blood pumping and get you sweating. The studio is very modernly decorated with a clean Nordic minimalistic feel. The decor is not distracting and makes the studio feel very calm. They also have a little butik at the far end of the studio to showcase their YO branded active wear. My only problem with the studio and basically, my only problem with place itself, is its small size. I assume the owners wanted to start out small and then transition into another space once they've grown their clientele, which is absolutely fine. But for the more popular classes, they might want to re-examine the max. limit. It's really annoying when you're trying to focus on your form/movement but have to be constantly worried that you're gonna run into someone else because the class is so full. In addition, the changing room is also pretty small and easily gets crowded, especially when classes are changing. But I'm not sure there is an easy solution to that. But for me, the classes and instructors are what earns YO STUDIOS 5 stars. I could easily watch some work out videos in the comforts of my own home but having that in-person instructor and their energy to guide your work out is what makes it worth it to come to a studio. The vibe of the studio and instructors are very laidback, friendly and welcoming so you don't feel intimidated but when it comes to the workout, they will definitely kick your a** (but in the best way possible). I also like how they utilize an online system and mobile app to reserve spots for classes and for check in. It makes registering and checking out classes super convenient. They also have special deals for membership and a free, one time 'test' class to check out the studio. But I would definitely recommend taking advantage of their 1 month unlimited pass deal for 199kr. It's totally worth it.
