The menu is lovely and has plenty of options to choose from. I ordered a fish finger sandwich which was very good. The dog who lives here is very friendly too!

Extremely friendly staff and Little Budworth (local village) folk. Real cask ales. What more could you ask from a traditional English country pub? I used to work in Chester a while back and was well aware of this hidden gem nestled in the picturesque Cheshire countryside. It was great to return last week whilst playing cricket at the adjacent Oulton Park cricket club. Only about half an hour away from Manchester this is a perfect spot to come for some lunch/dinner on your way back from Chester. Alternatively if you're a a petrol head like me, with Oulton park racing circuit just around the corner it can also act as a perfect pitstop on your way back after a few laps. Have yet to try the food but won't be long until that's rectified because the menu looks sensational. Highlights from it include the following. Pizza; 'The special one' (Goat's cheese, caramelised onions, rocket). Burger; 'The special one' (Cheese, beer soaked onions, gerkins, garlic mayo, special sauce, lettuce tomato relish) A special mention also for the Artisanal French cured meat platter (Yes that's as posh as it sounds) A selection of house charcuterie and paté from La Boucherie Candotto in South West France. In terms of drinks, not being a massive beer fan the only thing that stood out from the cocktail menu was 'The Egerton Refresher'. With Gin, home made marmalade, Mint, Elderflower and Pressed Apple Juice it looks right up my street.

The roll was completely inedible due to the fact that it had clearly been defrosted from frozen in a microwave, and had the texture of rubber. My meal was just about acceptable but nothing to rave about. Needless to say, my wife pointed out the problem to the bar staff, who made no real apology, and said she would pas the message on to "them" ?? Bearing in mind that the meal was paid for in advance, no refund was offered, neither was a replacement for the meal that was sent back, NOT EVEN A COMPLIMENTARY DRINK. This establishment clearly does not have any clue about customer service or customer satisfaction. My advice is to avoid it like the plague if you are looking to buy a meal. This will reflect badly on them locally as I will obviously share my experience with my neighbours (just down the road). To be fair, if you are just looking for a drink, it is a comfortable enough pub, and they did do a nice pint of guinness, but dont even think about ordering any food here.

Providing you're on the right country lane, finding it isn't a problem. The Duke's presence along the winding road is unmissable. Inside, the pub is fairly modern with a twist of country bumpkin. Tartan drapes (complete with pins) hang over the lovely windows, the exposed wooden beams and mix of furniture help to make it feel cosy and inviting. I had rang and delayed our booking by a couple of hours - the massive bbq feast the night before had rendered the original time of 1pm a little too early to stomach. On arrival it seemed we needn't have bothered calling ahead. There were a few tables occupied, some eating, some not. The staff seemed to deal with each a table at a time. This meant that there was a wait for food, but that wasn't a problem for us and our bbq stuffed tummies. The liver parfait starter (served with a berry sauce, toast and small salad garnish) seemed a little too perfect to be homemade - i'm not sure it was made in-house - if it was hats off to them! It was lovely. The rest of my family had the cauliflower and stilton soup which was also very tasty. The main event - the roast. I opted for beef (£13.50). It came with a huge homemade yorkie, roast potatoes, mixed veg, gravy and horseradish sauce. The beef was beautiful and tender, the yorkshire pud was crisp and the veg nicely cooked, although there could have been more of it. The potatoes were a little disappointing - they were more like boiled potatoes that had been baked rather than the crispy, fluffy treats I'm used to eating at home. The gravy was perfect - but, again, there could have been more of it. Not sure I'd make the trip from Manchester to the back lanes of Lach Dennis especially for a Duke's Sunday lunch, but I'll know where to go if i'm in the area and crave a good, honest pub roast.
