Beans with Pork

Took a break from our 22 yearly visit for the past 2 yrs because of COVID. So many new restaurants to try. Ix Kool hidden away in a strip mall, South of Cozumel, hopefully will be recognized, because it's a hidden gem! Specializing in Mayan cuisine, small menu though but fantastic dishes, so good, we went 2 times. The service was excellent, the restaurant decor was trendy modern, open kitchen, very clean. If it is a concern, they follow temperature checks along with requiring hand sanitizing before checking in. Both times cocktails are fantastic. Food ordered: table-side made Guacamole, Fried Octopus with Garlic Tostada, Lime Soup, Conchinita Pibil Tacos, Conchinita Pibil Panuchos, Pipian Pork and Beans with Pork. The complimentary Trio of Salsas and Chips were fantastic. All came out hot, fresh with nice presentation and tasting delicious. Nice extra: they have Mall parking in the back. An added bonus addition for all those from out of MX, you can make reservations on Opentable for them and it is honored. Atmosphere: open modern fresh, clean. Service: excellent. Food: excellent.

It's way past due time to send some love to Manuel and his team behind this amazing restaurant. I apologize to the group because we visited back in August 2021, and I'm barely getting to this now. That's how memorable the restaurant is. We had the pleasure of staying across the street, so it wasn't difficult to find the location within the shopping center. This is some amazing Mexican and Mayan food - there aren't many more words to say than that. The menu is admittedly brief but offers awesome food. We went to the restaurant twice. Manuel was so cool and welcoming to us, and even threw on a few extra treats to say thanks for coming. Some must-try items: beans with pork, ceviche, and the cochinita pibil.

We stumbled upon this place while visiting some shops. Extremely clean, staff all wore masks and gloves and wiped down everything including the top of our Coke cans. The food was SO GOOD. The molcajeteada was prepared table-side with fire-roasted veggies and was better than any salsa I've had back in America. I had the Cochinita pibil tacos and he had panuchos. Both were delicious and left us satisfied. We would happily have paid more than we did, but the prices were as good as the food. In the front of the Restaurant they had a nice selection of some artisan-crafted souvenirs that were less "cheesy" than some of the gift shops, including some local chocolate, mole mix, woven items, and small carved animals.

Restaurant was clean and taking health/safety protocols seriously. Our server was friendly and took time to explain each dish. You could tell that he was very proud of his culture and more proud to share it with us. We started with table side guacamole which we absolutely loved. We then shared the Pipian Pork (no knife required, super tender pork in a very flavorful broth/stew) served with home made tortillas and the Cochinatas Pibil Panuchos (crunchy tortillas stuffed with beans and topped with pork, pickled onions, and avocado). We finished with their Cornbread dessert which is served with coconut ice cream. If you are in Cozumel, I highly recommend you come here for a meal. If you're on a cruise ship, it's a 5 minute walk. You won't be disappointed.

Absolutely phenomenal food, the most welcoming staff (thank you Juan and Alex!), I echo the other reviews, what an incredibly hidden gem. The Sikil P'aak, Cochinita Pibil Panuchos, ceviche, all great. The salsas have distinct flavors and some have a spice kick if you want it! Beautiful restaurant tucked away off the street. Great drinks too (love the Mayan Pineapple Margarita). I rarely post reviews but this place deserves to be tried. Outstanding.

But ... like me, how wrong you would be! Chef Anthony, his staff and their exquisite service are worth every penny and more! Let me explain ... I found that one of the BEST reasons of having Chef and his staff prepare your meals at your vacation spot, in your own dining room, takes away the nighty headaches of getting to your destination, parking, dealing with crowds and wait times at restaurants, all that can be so stressful. You're dining at your own leisure, which will add so much more pleasure to your vacation experience. Each morning/nights tables were set up beautifully and elegantly. To say that every meal that was prepared for our group was delicious, would be an understatement. Not only did he graciously prepare meals for specific pallets in our party, making sure no allergies were overlooked, he led us through an adventure of flavors, that only a TRUE PROFESSIONAL CHEF could accomplish. Foods and flavors that I myself would not typically enjoy, he created them into delicious meals that I couldn't have enough. His wonderful staff were very attentive and courteous, describing each of the Chefs creations before each course. After our meals were enjoyed, Chef and his staff washed and dried every pot, pan and dish, right to the last spoon used and the kitchen was cleaned and made in order. Our hands never forgetting that they are on vacation! Every breakfast was a buffet to enjoy, with every possible dish you could think of, for your pleasure. And if there was a specific request to enjoy, Chef Anthony made it happen. My introduction to a have a personal chef as part of my vacation was an eye opening experience and will now be a permanent part of my vacation itinerary. If you're staying on the island of Cozumel, Chef Anthony and his staff are an ABSOLUTE MUST!!! Chef Anthony is EXTREMELY approachable and friendly, making you feel like family. Prepare yourself for a wonderful experience of fine dining and exquisite service!!! You will not regret your decision.

I know Sonia from when she lived in Portland and was so looking forward to the authentic meal we planned via E-mail. Their web site will give you some set menus and prices, but they are more then happy to mix up various items and give you a total price for it. Marco made us his famous Chicken Mole, that was out of this world (27 ingredients just in the sauce), along with fresh made pork quesadilla, Guacamole, Pico de Gallo, Tortilla Chips, Salsa verde, Green Rice, Black Beans, Jícama & Cucumber Salsa, Honey Drizzled Fruit, Lightly Sprinkled w/ Chili Powder And they also made us a pitcher each of sangria & super strong yummy "Marco-ritas". First off, the portions were enough that we had a full 2nd dinner as leftovers the next night, making the cost per person a very good deal. The chicken in the mole was 4 huge boneless, skinless all white breast that were plump and moist and the Mole sauce is generously portioned over and around the beasts. All the other sides were excellent!!! The sangria was refreshing and the "Marco-ritas.... well look out, they pack a punch!!! Sonia ices the pitcher so that you get many healthy portions that took us days to finish!!! After Marco & Sonia prepared our dinner they sat down with us for a chat to catch up and it is easy to see how much they enjoy meeting and cooking for small and large groups and helping to make you vacation fun, easy and memorable. Going to restaurants is nice, but having Doña Sonia and Chef Marco come to your condo is such a special treat I can't recommend it enough!! Oh and BTW, their salsa is great on hot dogs!!

I especially loved the Mayan influence that was weaved into the stories and recipes that our group explored. We already have plans for a dinner party back home to share with friends. I purchased our classes about two months in advance online and was easily able to connect with Lilly and share my shellfish allergy ahead of time. Our classes were $75 each and included a mezcal tasting and hands on experience leading us through homemade tortilla making and more than five other recipes like beans, plantains, Oaaxan cheese in salsa and many more. It's important to note that this meal was one of the tastiest, most interesting and filling from our trip. Before we kicked off the class, Lilly provided a history lesson and led us through the garden to see some of the ingredients up close. We had eight folks on our class and the setup and flow of everything made the divided experiences even and fun every step of the way. Funny enough, Lilly even offered to FaceTime with us upon returning home to run through the recipes and share tips! The only part of the experience that threw us off was arriving to the marked location and being told we would load into cars and go elsewhere. At first, we were the only two women there and Lilly was not which made the interaction hesitant on our end to ya know, hop in cars with strangers and go to the jungle ten minutes outside of town It all worked out beautifully but it might be worth including in the preparation emails. You cannot go wrong with this experience and it is worth every penny. Thank you so much, Lilly and family!
